True, but it's not only that. We can all learn the core concepts of his logic and apply to our fields of work or pretty much anywhere in life. These are simple truths: 1) always look into the essence of things, don't dwell too much into the details without knowing the real purpose of what it's all about; 2) Always consider cost vs benefit; 3) Don't half-ass things, always go for the best result possible, don't be lazy; 4) Love what you're doing.

I am impressed with the undercarriage of this car. I have owned several Ford products, but never seen this kind use of aluminum and castings and extrusions. @@eddiegardner8232 Yeah, I have no clue what @San is talking about. There are some similarities with overall suspension design, but obviously a lot is different. I did find it odd that Sandy seemed to criticize the ID.4 for using McPherson struts which Sandy said was “not a BMW quality suspension” [like the Tesla] because it used struts instead of double wishbone. I found the BMW quality part to be funny because the best handling BMWs including the 2-series, 3-series, 4-series as well as the X3, M3/M4, Z4, i3, i4, etc. all use front struts. Only 5-series and up sized BMWs use double wishbones up front. Struts are cheaper to fix and have fewer parts. For a car like an ID.4, struts are perfectly fine. I do think Sandy has a soft spot for the Mach-E because he’s from Detroit, he worked for Ford, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he personally knows people that worked on designing this product. He had a lot of critical things to say about ID.4 even claiming some of the lower control arms on the rear were shaped like they were because mistakes had been made, almost implying they had to retrofit some forgotten component.

I just watched a ride along on the GT version of the MachE. It uses magnetorheological shock absorbers, of the type developed at GM to provide millisecond speed changes in damper rates. Supposedly starting at around $60K MSRP, with comparable acceleration to the Model Y performance. I will definitely be checking one of those out when they are released for production in the Fall.

@CFG39

What exactly does a “Ford” suspension look like? I still see a strut like the VW used, not a double wishbone like the Tesla. I’m also surprised that the extensive use of aluminum isn’t being lambasted as too expensive vs. stamped steel. It is interesting that they chose to base their new GE1 platform on the existing C2 platform which underpins everything from the Focus to the Bronco Sport to the Escape, as opposed to doing a true 100% ground up EV platform.

I wonder if Ford made the whole battery pack or if LG did that along with making the battery cells. I also wonder who is supplying Ford the more advanced suspension and frame parts, doubting they are doing it themselves at this early stage in their EV program. They seem to be on the right track, though, which is a little encouraging.

Wow, Ford let the engineers design the new platform without having the accountants looking over their shoulders and vetoing everything new! Hooray! Clean sheet engineering leads to big advances in capability, crashworthiness, NVH, ease of assembly and on and on with a new EV targeted vehicle design. Congratulations Ford! Excited to see Munro's teardown of the new Mustang Mach E show us some of the secrets of what's looking to be an excellent design.

So advanced, so many different inventions compared to the iD4 yet when I test drove the Mach-E back to back with the iD4, the iD4 felt that tad bit more composed, comfortable, softer yet stiffer around the bends. It might look good underneath but Ford could most definitely put down more time dialing it in.

@@Matzes Even with the cost savings, I imagine Tesla will be making more. Tesla has ramped up their cell production really well and is seeing the benefits of that in cost per KW. 🙂

After Sandy completes praising the rear-end, let’s calculate the value of his advertising. I’ll bet it’s worth over $100K ! Ford would save money giving Sandy a free Mach e vs. running expensive and wasteful TV ads. Sandy has much more credibility than advertising.

Front suspension looks basically like an old BMW E46 front axle! Using high compliance bushes in the back of the lower arms to control the longitudinal wheel path, and a small stiff bush to react the pure lateral loads from the tyre. ie kinematics for both Ride quality, and handling. However, BMW themselves moved away from this arrangement, to a dual lower arm arrangement after the E46 in order to incude a virtual steering point to better optimise steering feel and feedback, which is difficult to do on strut type arrangements with their necessarily offset tyre centre points.!

So if I understand/interpret correctly, all the crushable/crumpling pieces in the front underside of the car are aimed at pushing away any potential damage to the front end of the battery. Is this correct?
