My school taught Spanish 1st-5th as a required language, then when you got to middle school you could either take Spanish or French (only one, not both and you can’t switch the language later) BUT when you got into 7th grade they also offered mandarin/Chinese (I took it) or Latin, Then finally when you get to high school it’s just the continuation of all of those. Kinda confusing but one of my party tricks as a white person is that I can speak mandarin and Spanish :) (你好我叫 May，我学习汉语 and Hola me llamo es Aila, yo estudio español por ocho años)
