Your content was really helpful as I searched for a dirt bike. spent a lot of time researching what I'd like to get; and chose the KLX300R. For me, the KLX is perfect, and your content was much appreciated, especially the Dyno info. Drag pulls were fun. The suspension, weight and power style of the KLX300R are perfect. I like a plush ride so I don't get beat up, so I run the stock settings on the back and a little softer on the front compression. I'm 5-9, 180. KLX fits like a glove and I love how the engine rips through the mid-range. Thanks for the vids!! Well done.

Your support is appreciated! The 300R seems like it handles off road well and has a bit nicer suspension than the dual sport. I will agree with having a plush suspension setup for the "chill" rides. It just makes it so much easier to ride. Congrats and I'm glad you're enjoying the bike!

As someone that has owned multiple Drz400sm and two wr250x since 2008 all with varying degrees of mods and now looking to get back into dual sports and supermotos. I appreciate your 100% real and honest review as I look at the KLX300SM as a possible option as the Wr250r/x are selling for so damn much lately now that they have been discontinued! I am going to hold out and wait for a good deal on a Wr250x and just do another 280cc thumper talk big bore kit. I wish I never sold my wr280x as that bike ripped and was bullet proof reliable even with a punched out motor, I wanted more power after the big bore and got a ktm690sm but ended up working on it more than riding and it nickel and dimed me with repairs at the ktm dealer. Now I want another WR.

It would be neat if you could find a buddy with the new Honda CRF300 to participate in the drag race too. I have a DRZ400 & DR650 now, love them. I had a Kawi KLX250SF (factory supermoto version Kawi made in 08 & 09 and it was a blast), so really thinking of buying a KLX300 like you have, looks like a great bike & lots of fun. Great video, being a klx owner the drz has been brought to my attention as being a bike that I could upgrade to and achieve more power/torque, though being top heavy and only 5 speed I decided to big bore the klx to 331cc and add pumper carburetor which I am very satisfied with now, though if I were to replace the klx now I would most likely go for the Beta 390rr, have ridden one and it seems much better then the drz and has 6 speed and efi also from what I have been told by the local mechanic is they are fairly reliable too!

As usual, honest great review. purchasing a bike very soon. I was sold on the DRZ early on when investigating reviews in the winter for many reasons, Got hyped on new model of the Kawasaki 300 but may be leaning back to the DRZ again. Considering my riding will be 50/50 on off road. I think if i was 70% off 30% on I would go with the Kawasaki. I had a DRZ400 and KLX250 previously, sold the KLX250 as I don't need two bikes. I thought I preferred the power of the DRZ over the nimbleness of the KLX, but I think I may have sold the wrong bike lol. KLX was lower and easier to manage in tight areas, easier to turn around at dead ends, easier to pick up in the gnar, and a little less fatiguing to ride. Someday I'm gonna get me a KLX300 as recompense for my mistake.
@jhmotorclub6916

I could see how a DRZ would make an absolute tank of a dual sport. If I had one, I would probably develop a custom chassis to cut weight and make it more enduro than dual sport. What you said about agility, I agree with though! I do not think you would be disappointed with the extra power of the 300 over the 250.

I just sold my DRZ 400s and got a 2012 WR250R. So far I definitely prefer the WR without a doubt. Its just way lighter and more nimble feeling offroad and that s mainly what I ride. I even had a KTM 450 EXCR and I just didnt need that power offroad. I really am suprised the WR250R is enough power with only 250cc. I also prefer fuel injection anyday over a carb. Ive never had any issues with fuel injection. I have had issues with every carbed bike Ive ever owned, no major issues but just annoying carb related stuff.
@hisride
@hisride Ай бұрын
how does the WR feel compared to the DRZ? I have short gearing on my WR and in a low gear at high rpm it really kicks you more than it should do for a 250. With the DRZ is it like this, but just really low in the revs?
@mjlfz1
@mjlfz1 Ай бұрын
@@hisride The WR is definitely more twitchy in a low gear with high RPMs, the DRZ was not like that from what I remember. It's like a tractor it has so much torque, it's also way heavier so it's harder to ride really slow. Overall the WR is just so much better in every aspect. I did like the torque and grunt of the DRZ but it's a way bigger engine than the WR. Definitely shifting more on the WR as I personally don't like to wring out the gears too much.
@k0d0kan

First off, ALL your bikes look great! You can tell the difference on a single track. The KLX is more flickable but personally, I'd take the DRZ over the KLX all day long...It doesn't take long to feel the power difference. AND, if you put a pumper carb on the DRZ, it's two different worlds. The DRZ feels like it's twice the bike power wise, and if you take the time to setup the suspension on the DRZ to fit your weight, I promise you will sell the KLX... :)

Hands down the DRZ with the Showa suspension is the best. The suspension has fully adjustable compression and rebound damping including high and low speed compression on the rear shock. It is bulletproof and will average over 60 mpg on the highway.

A lot of people are pleasantly surprised by the DRZ400 once riding for the first time. A 20 year old design but can still hold its own with modern bikes. Here in Australia we can still buy a plated DRZ400E with around 40hp straight out of the showroom. Quite a bit of weight can be removed to bring it closer to the weight of the wr250R. It does not take a lot of money to improve the suspension and you have a bullet proof dual sport / enduro with long service intervals.

So I have ben looking at street legal bikes but are more an offroad design. The CRF450L caught my eye but they are too expensive, and I cant find a good used one that isnt also over priced. I thought then about the DRZ400, but it is still a big bike. Then the KLX300 has now caught my eye. As Most people say they beat the CRF300 in the dirt.....plus I can just go out and buy a new KLX300 and it be lower half the cost of a crf450L......I also bet there are tons of after market support for the KLX300.....Now should I buy a used klx300 or a new one ? And which model is the best for more offroad, only using tarmac to get to the trails....I have my KLR650 for longer Moto trips, and sight seeing....

The KLX is a BRILLIANT platform. I honestly cannot fault it at all. Very tractable throttle, agile, great ergonomics. I don't know what to do to "uncork" it, but all I wanna do for now is put a 46-48T sprocket in the back since it's geared for road from factory (42T). DRZ has that Torque!....which will actually get you OUT of trouble, more than it gets you into it!...Sounds crazy, but it's been my experience for sure as a newer rider. It's a bit "Tippy" and over powered for tight single track, or narrow Woods riding, so if you're buddies all got 250's, don't expect to blow off doors unless it's in more Open spots where a 400cc will shine.....250's are still better for tighter articulation stuff, everything is compromise. But like I said, the Drz can jump logs and obstacles like it's Nothing....while most 250's and 300's gotta Rev Up, 400cc is just the Slip of a wrist....it's all give and take.

It feels like a lighter DRZ in some aspects. However, the DRZ has some good suspension going for it. The DRZ obviously wins in an all out drag race. However, on the trails, they would be evenly matched with equal riders. The KLX requires a little less effort to maneuver around the trails though.

🤘🤠🏴‍☠️ owner reports around "the Tubes" seem to agree that the klx gains nicely if not biggly from normal stage one mods and even the top end seems to open up a bit. Not a lot of things on suspension mods yet, but it kind of sounds like it's a good compromise even stock once rider sag and clickers are dialed in. There's definitely more to get out of it, I'm sure. The WR irritates me because I don't want to like it, (left over prejudice from when Yamahas sucked long before your time,) but it's hard to argue with what a thousand more dollars buys. I'll keep pretending I don't like it. I haven't ridden one, so ignorance is bliss.😆 I have ridden a completely stock DRZ once on the street and from that limited perspective it honestly felt like a slightly heavier XR/L which makes sense since they're from an overlapping generation. They were always considered a solid play bike and a hundred years later, they still work that way. What's interesting is that "technically speaking," the original klx300 was also from that same generation, but comparisons weren't all that relevant because it was a dirt only trail bike capable of C and B ticket hare scrambles, but not ever a pure race bike. The suspension on those early 300s was considered pretty good for the time, but I'd love to do a head to head between the old and new to see if there has really been a down grade or if nostalgia just sweetens the impression. Maybe when I get mine I can find someone with the older one and do that. Btw: I love the production quality of your intro to this video, my dude. See you in the next.

I cannot wait to see what it does! The wait for parts is killin' us! I want to get started on suspension on mine, once the motor is squared away. The WR is a solid bike, but the torque of the KLX is nice on the trails. I'd imagine owning a WR would be like owning a 2 stroke for me because of the high strung powerband, but I'm a Kawi guy at heart. I think that is a good way to describe the DRZ. All my friends with them like to use them to do everything, nothing to serious on the street or dirt. Also, I'm glad the video quality doesn't go unnoticed, thanks!

@@j.bridges2921 With the KLX at 300 pounds, and probably a bit more when you add the ADV gear, it is heavy enough to not get pushed around by the wind at higher speeds. It actually feels stable at 80 MPH even, in the top speed video I just posted. It will cruise at 70 MPH, stock, easily. You have about 10-12 MPH to pass those who are hogging the fast lane at that point. 10 minutes on the highway is cake for the KLX. If I were to gear it for ADV (my definition of ADV is 150+ mile days and needing capability to get through obstacles that a street bike can't), I would go up one in the front and maybe down one in the rear with Stage 1 mods. It will feel like nothing at 70, and still have some room to go.
