This is a Motormouth couple car review of the new 2021 Land Rover Defender SUV. The original Land Rover Defender was a body-on-frame SUV built to take on the most rugged terrain with a basic design that stood the test of time. But things change and the Defender needed to change to be just as capable but also more fuel efficient, crash worth and comfortible. Land Rover moved from a Body-on-frame design in the old Defender to a modern Unibody design that allows for a stiffer platform, better suspension and many more electronic aids. The Defender comes with 3 engines, a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder with 296 horsepower and 296 lb-ft of torque. It also comes with a 3L in-line 6 supercharged engine with 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque.A supercharged V8 is available on the 2022 model; it has 518 horsepower and 461 lb-ft of torque. All come with a 8 speed automatic transmission. The Defender 90 is a two-door model and the Defender 110 is a four-door model. You have to move up to the second trim to get the 3L inline-6 engine on the 110 model. The Defender is capable of a run from 0-100km/h 6.1 seconds. the towing capacity of this new Defender is Up to 8,201 pounds with the 3L supercharged V6 and Up to 7,716 pounds with the 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder. The all-new 2021 Land Rover Defender is available with a two-door model, called Defender 90, and it is sold with 5 seats plus an optional jump seat in the front row that replaces the centre console. Most people will opt for the Defender 110, which is a 7-passenger model with 4-dorrs and is also available with the front jump seat. The interior is basic and clad in easy wipe-down surfaces for getting dirty and holding up over time. The new Defender comes standard with LED Headlights and taillights, Keyless entry, Durable rubber cabin, Leather heated steering wheel, 10-way semi powered heated front seats, 10-inch touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, Wireless charging and 19-inch wheels.

Passenger should have hands off the wheel when someone else is driving, Zack, LOL! You guys rock! Very impressed with the modern look yet still capable new Land Rover Defender too! Would have been great with a diesel engine here in Canada, I agree. Oh, and I love the very smooth segue by Andrea to "Questions, Coffee and Cars", so pro!

Andrea has the first qualification of a good driver: she remains calm and composed. Zack, you need not worry. Body on frame or unibody, Land Rover took care of off-road capability and, for them, that is mission accomplished. TFL took the Defender, an FJ Cruiser and 4-Runner to Moab. Only the Defender never scraped. Reliability works on a scale. JLR does not produce many vehicles every year when compared to Honda for example. This gives them less "samples" to work out the ripples.

Since I was in the British Infantry for 10 years. Land Rover Defender drove me around, UK, Canada, USA, Germany, Iraq, Saudi, Kuwait, Bosnia, Croatia, Falkland Islands, modified one in Northern Ireland. Truly great vehicles that have saved many lives and taken people to places in the far corners of the globe they never would have made it to otherwise. Waiting to see what version the military gets, there has to be completely base stripped down model coming out, because the military guys would destroy the interior 😏😏😏

Hi. Great review and a format that I've not seen before but it works great! I've had my Defender 6 months now and so far no technical issues, 5000 miles covered and its great to drive either road or track. I have had a lot of accessories fitted and painted black which has added to the cost but as Andrea said you can custom the car to your liking - a tip JLR have got from Jeep I think?

That Rivian question was ridiculous. The Tesla truck, the Rivian, the Bollinger, the Lucid or even this new “Canoo” vehicle ....are little more than pipe dreams that few will ever see or even hear off. I have a friend who put down the $100 deposit on his ‘Cyber Truck’.... 2/3 years later he’s still waiting for ... something/anything. Most of these new brands will end up like the award winning (non-produced), “Dyson” car.... Does anyone even remember that one?

There are a variety of issues, check engine light went on with the 2L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, 360 degree camera wasn't working properly and the tow assist system had some issues as well. Some comments about the obsession with "reliability." First, discussions often confuse brand and vehicle RANKINGS with the actual incidence and frequency of issues owners face. In a 2 horse race the loser comes in 2nd whether they trail the winner by a nose or 17 lengths. In the case of reliability rankings the situation is far closer to the former than the latter. In the JD Power graphic shown in the video Dodge and KIA rank at the top with 136 "issues" per 100 vehicles. Translated to a stat for an individual owner that means 1.36 reported issues per vehicle. Near the bottom of the list comes Land Rover with 2.44 issues per vehicle. But what are these issues? JD Power captures complaints of every possible type with no weighting as to seriousness. A small gap between panels or an occasional glitch in bluetooth connectivity counts as much as a blown engine or a failed transmission. Furthermore, what does the reliability of a previous generation of a vehicle tell you about the likely reliability of a completely new generation such as the Range Rover Defender? Are designers and engineers likely to repeat errors made in a previous version or expend effort to counter problems that came up in the past? On the other hand, reliability is increasingly dependent on software that manages modern vehicles. And as those who install the latest edition of an operating system for their phones know, manufacturers rely on "early adopters" to be beta testers. It's simply impossible to discover and correct each and every software glitch with even rigorous testing prior to release. The fact is that the purchaser of any new vehicle is overwhelmingly likely to drive it for years without a serious reliability issue. That's a far cry from decades ago when an owner who reported putting 100K miles on a vehicle might well rate a small article in a local newspaper and the salt on roads in the winter in harsh climates resulted in car frames literally breaking in two. (I know. It happened to me on a Saab I owned in Michigan.) What are the chances that a problem serious enough to leave one stranded occurs in today's vehicles? It happens but at a minuscule rate not measured accurately by unverified anecdotes published on the internet. I currently own a KIA, a brand ranked 1st in initial quality in 2020 by JD Power and a VW ranked 9th. But I didn't purchase a "brand." I purchased a particular vehicle. The overall brand rankings are meaningless compared to the incidence of serious issues for a particular vehicle in the brand's portfolio. The KIA is my second Sorento. In over 80K miles on my first I never experienced even a single issue of reliability, large or small. Not one. Another 40K miles on my second Sorento and the same result so far. KIA's well known long warranties are a minor reassurance but the fact is that if the warranties had been for 50 miles and 30 days I would not have spent a single cent more on repairs than I actually experienced. In other words, long warranties are more a marketing tool than a measure of reliability. My current VW is a GTI purchased in 2018. It's my third. The first several decades ago and the second a MK6 purchased in 2012. Same story as the KIA. No issues, whatsoever. Of course, I'm religious about following (or exceeding) scheduled maintenance. And that may well explain why Europeans don't share the same view of VW's as "unreliable" that is more common among Americans. They pay far more for their GTIs than Americans and likely are more careful about protecting their investments. I have no special fondness for Land Rovers. Never owned one. And my experiences with KIAs and VWs are anecdotal and unverifiable. Just as much as complaints I see on internet forums. But having owned cars for about half a century I'm firmly convinced that obsession about reliability in today's vehicles is seriously overblown especially compared to even a decade or two ago. Buy a new car. Maintain it well. Don't abuse it. It's likely not to matter what brand you select. Unless you happen to purchase a lemon (a situation that happens very rarely for every brand) you're likely to be among the vast majority of owners who have a largely trouble free experience over years of ownership.

I mean, so far, it just looks like the I6 is relatively ok, but apparently the 4 cylinder looks like it needs a rethink on what the computer says it should run at, vs what its actually doing. As TFL can attest to this when they tried to get a bone stock Defender with the steel rims. Had it less than a week, and it had to go back, spent weeks there, first it was fixed, then it wasn't. Then JLR sent an engineer over from the UK. Still couldn't figure out what was happening with it, so they tried getting another one. Then the mechanics at the local dealer (while fitting it with one of the options they asked for), accidentally severed the main wiring harness, so it was dead. So JLR just decided "Here, take this one." and gave them one of the fully loaded I6 versions. So far, no major issues with that one, just something with the reverse camera system, which is affecting most of the defenders out there. Its like the old adage for Land Rover, "It can go around the world, but it'll stall when trying to leave the grocery store parking lot."

Wow, sorry to hear this. Hopefully, the I6 you have will be okay. Our friends have a Ranger Rover Sport and they have been in and out of the dealership for the last 3 weeks. They are pretty frustrated.

To your commenter who mentioned Rivian: If you ever own a business, you'd know that what makes business sense is to MAXimise profits, so making a higher margin model out of another's parts bin makes sense because most people are buying this thing for its image so they can look like they are some tough outdoorspeople at the Starbucks drive through. People have to stop thinking that anything new MUST woe them like a mating game or dismiss it as not making any sense at all. Nobody put a gun to your head.

I have to disagree with you Zach about the body on frame or unibody construction. My personal opinion is that you can't get the same level of isolation with a unibody. You end up feeling every small pebble or rock you drive over UNLESS you use some form of air suspension. Body on frame adds a full layer of rubber isolation between the suspension and the body. Unibodies also often produce a drumming effect on the pavement. I also have to disagree about weight saving. By the time you reinforce a unibody to withstand off-roading, the weight is almost always the same or even more with a unibody. Unibodies are fine for on-road but for off-road not so much. Hit a rock anywhere else but the skid plates with a unibody and it will dent and rust. Hit the frame anywhere and you're laughing. Finally, it suffers the same fate as my old FJ cruiser... show me an easy way to mount a winch or even lift it with a Hi-Lift jack. I had to install rock rails to use a Hi-Lift how about the Defender? While the antiquated 4Runner wasn't mentioned for our consideration, the Lexus GX460 could have. Maybe not quite as capable but probably cheaper. Personally I think the Bronco is going to be the big hit in this market if they ever release it. We can discuss the pros and cons of unibody again once its out. The big advantage of unibodies in IMHO is crash worthiness. Modern ones are simply amazing. Its funny how electric batteries lower the CG and make handling so amazing in electric cars yet using a heavy frame makes them handle clumsy. At first blush they produced a very capable off-road vehicle just don't ever get stuck with it.

@ 17:17. I test drove a Defender 110 very similar to the one in this video. I absolutely loved it. In fact, I would have drove it home had it not been for the fact that I had a deposit on the R1S. So I waited. I just took delivery of the Rivian R1S this past October and it was soooo worth the wait. Nothing I test drove comes even close. Not the V8 variant, not the 4 Runner, not the Bronco, nothing. Forget the fact that it’s electric. The on road performance, off road capabilities, the cargo space, the seating space, the efficiency, the manufacture’s warranty, the sound system, the quality of the interior and the burly exterior. I would purchase the R1S again today at it’s higher price without hesitation. Yes, it’s expensive (totally get it), but I’m just saying none of the money goes towards over the top opulence. It’s evenly spread out in awesome capabilities across the board.

Having worked for a JLR/Rolls Royce dealership, I’ve driven the older Defender 90/110s (which were $$$). I loved them, ...but they had horrible road manners and very questionable build quality & reliability. I’ve been in this new one and I believe it captures the spirit of the past Defenders... which I (and many) thought would be far to difficult to achieve. Land Rover appears to have pulled off the impossible. I’m impressed, especially in that colour. Well done them. Despite pricing...It doesn’t surprise me that they are selling so well. Great review Guys and thanks for another video.

That was well done guys. I've watched dozens of reviews on the new Defender, and Zach, you are the first North American auto journalist to say that this vehicle needs to have the Diesel option available here. I can't agree more. The new Defender Ingenium gasoline engines are smooth and very powerful but way too thirsty. Especially if you are running premium fuel in them.

You hardly see them here. It competes with the Ranch if you want it better equiped. It has style as a road vehicle but a Ranch is more style. Land Rover made a mistake by refining the vehicle. Many farmers had a simple Land Rover as a utility and they threw away that clientele. Conclusion: attractive but not a great seller. Next!
