@@clooperman3745 A manual gearbox makes zero sense in today's cars. Auto is faster, more efficient, much better for off-road as it works with the terrain response, and is actually better for the engine than the old fashioned manual shifter. Computers can make decisions millions of times faster than humans, when it comes to controlling a machine - so why get in the way?

One of the best reviews for this vehicle. Day in day out real world usage (loved, the mud in the passenger seat, the wood and hay in the truck) and not just a review for people in the suburbs with dreams of driving in The Sahara. He also talked about floating and the limited use of the snorkel and the silly box on the side. Love the fact that this thing is so capable, yet the interior is practical and super usable, very nice without going all posh like all the premium SUVs. Just wish JLR built more reliable vehicles.... Thank you Harry.

I have a 110 240S. With most of the options that Harry mentions apart from the side boxes. I opted for the outgoing 4 Cylinder Diesel which earned me a discount of around £4k which is still unheard of at most dealers. The 4 pot is still a great drive with plenty of power and torque and returning around 28 mpg and that's with only 1500 miles on the clock, this can only improve. Over all a better car than was expected. Plenty of farmers buying them in my area. Well done Land Rover.

I love how a proper off-road car then has an optional “off road pack”. Also those extra little lamps on the rear right at the edges I’m sure are for meeting a regulation that says you’ve got to be able to see both rear lights from a certain angle. If you check, the spare wheel obscures the main lamps fairly quickly, but the ones of the edge remain visible.

Fantastic review, Harry is without doubt a master at actual real world reviews! However 400 hp, all that tech which is bound to go wrong (and it will go wrong in the middle of a field), air suspension and hybrid drivetrain... something tells me I will see most of these in and around London and the Home Counties than I will in any farm with someone in a marketing job saying how deep it will Wade and how tough the tow hooks are... with both of those things never ever being used... would be great to see how the basic diesel on steels performs as this would be the model that may be considered as an actual day to day workhorse

By all accounts, it is an amazing package, the new Defender. And I have seen quite a few video reviews that back that up. And I do love the new, yet retro styling of the exterior, and the interior. And on paper, not much comes close. However, I think I'll wait for an urban used one, cos even £45k is beyond my price range atm. But I agree, I think the new Defender is gonna be a big hit, especially when the commercial variant comes to market. I have already seen a few of these on the road already, and they do have a great stance and sit very nicely, and seem to have bags of composure. So once again, it looks like Land Rover have created the perfect off roader for our times.

People don't like change? Suspicion of a Defender that doesn't deafen you or shake your fillings out? Good old fashioned Little British nostalgia? No problem with people enjoying classics, but your underlying suggestion that the old one is better for life in 2021 is dubious at best.

Exactly. I am disappointed, but that’s subjective as I want an offroader that is quickly and easily fixable. My daily driver is a Tesla, so it’s not that I am against change or tech or anything. I expected and wanted a “new defender” but what we got is an entirely different car (which I personally don’t like at all)

Our son in law works for JLR. Earlier in the year he turned up with a 110 Defender for a day out in the Staffordshire moorlands. 3 adult in the front. 2 grandchildren in car seat and grandad in the rear. Springer spaniel in the boot. Loads of comfortable room. Only one criticism. If you go for the front 3 seat option it does make the rear a bit claustrophobic with the centre seat in use. But I imagine it wouldn’t be used on a regular basis. Impressive off-roader, and comfortable.

I still own and run a working old Defender 90, and do love it. That said, I am getting on now - and I'm a bit tired of it's quirks. I am warming to the new one. It's performance & manners are so much more 21st C than the (very 20th C) of the old one. It will be really interesting to see how the mechatronics hold up on the used market and also what happens with the environmental angle across the UK. I'd probably think commercial 110 without the macho trappings, coil sprung and full towing gubbins.

I don't know.... In my days working on a farm (OK, forty-odd years ago) if it couldn't be fixed with a length of baler twine and a hammer, then it was way too advanced and you'd need specialist equipment (like spanners) to get you going again.
