When I was little my parents planned a “progressive dinner” for me and my brothers. We got all dressed up and went to Seattle and had appetizers at one restaurant, main coarse at another, and dessert at another. It was so fun and just something super different! :)

Yes an experience gift is awesome. 2 years ago we did that for our kids. We went to Boston and New York and my 3 younger kids got to see and play in snow for the first time ever. We saw the Rockefeller tree like in Home Alone which was magical, went to Central Park and Times Square and ate New York style pizza for the very first time. Plus we shopped at Target and 5 below, a first time for the kids as well. And we went to a ton of museums and an aquarium. It was the trip of a lifetime and the most amazing experience

We live in AZ and we’ve moved into gifting experiences as well. Precovid we bought suitcases and plane tix and flew to CA Xmas night. Last year we woke up at home and gifted a ski trip so the girls woke up to ski clothes, etc and we drove to a cabin in the mountains and me their cousins and grandparents there - so fun! As for bathrooms, we’re a fam of 6 and have always had 3 bathrooms…but our 4 girls have always shared! It’s a nightmare but a great lesson for them to learn as far as sharing time and space ;)

We live about 3 hours from Gatlinburg and have been there multiple times there is so much to do but sometimes it can be so crowded. We like to stay at the wilderness it has an indoor water park and restaurants so it gives the kids plenty to do during the winter months and you really don’t have to leave if you get there and it’s too crowded. So for something like you’re planning, I’d give them each a blowup snow tube, some of the fake sparkly snow (that makes a huge mess lol) and a map with the location circled, maybe some hot chocolate packets or something like that too. There are lots of cabins and hotel rooms for rent and plenty of activities for the kids. There is indoor snow tubing in Pigeon Forge. The ski lodge, Ober, is in Gatlinburg, you can ride the tram up to it. They have ice skating, snow tubing and skiing there. We definitely could have snow in February, but they make snow at the ski lodge even if it’s not snowing. There are also plenty of places to eat at in town.

Amy, I live between Gatlinburg and Boone, in Waynesville, N.C. I have been both places many times and both are wonderful, however, if you have to make reservations in advance your best bet to see snow is at Boone. Gatlinburg has more things to do, but Boone is the capitol of winter sports. Gatlinburg elevation is lower than Boone, but if the weather is cold enough they do make snow at their ski resort.

We live 1.5 hours away from Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg and we love it!! We stayed at the Margaritaville hotel in The Island last January and had a blast with the kids. If you’re looking for snow but it doesn’t snow on your trip, there’s a place to snow tube indoor all year long. There’s also Dollywood, Indoor mini golf, wax museum, sky bridge, Ridley’s aquarium, plenty of shops and I highly recommend the dinner shows. We went to Hatfields and McCoys and my kids still talk about it. If you stay in The Island or close by, you won’t even have to get in and out of your car to go to shops, restaurants, and the Ferris wheel and fountain show.

Our kids are getting older (18, 14, 10) and when we asked them what they wanted for Christmas they couldn’t come up with anything lol. So we decided to go on a family vacation with my sisters and brother and their families for Christmas this year. We’re going to the Poconos, we rented a house close to Camelback and we’re going to do different activities like make our own ornaments, decorate cookies and just have a “old fashioned “ Christmas focusing on spending time together. We plan on going skiing, tubing etc. we’ll get a few small gifts for them to open but definitely not what we usually do. It’s honestly been less stressful not having to come up with gift ideas this year. Can’t wait til we get there!

If your kids don’t get to see snow that much and you would like to get in the Christmas spirit I HIGHLY recommend gatlinburg Tennessee. I live 2 hours away from there and it definitely is a magical experience during the holidays. Around February it can be gloomy from where snow has melted and the rain and everything. There will be a Christmas parade and there’s a little village area with a bunch of shops and it is the cutest thing. But around February last year they had a swinging bridge you could walk across and underneath they had giant dangling light up hearts. They also had a giant LED Christmas tree. We went on the sky lift last time we was there. You can take it up to the top of the mountain and that’s where it lets you off to go walk across the bridge and see the whole view of gatlinburg.

When I still lived at my parents (I moved out about a year ago) all of us used to share the same bathroom (we were two girls + my parents) since we only had one with a shower + toilet etc and one with only a toilet and sink (like a guest bathroom). I don’t know if that’s typical or not for a German household. Some of my friends had multiple “complete” bathrooms in their homes / houses and some not. We lived in an old pharmacy. In Germany pharmacies only sell medicine (prescription stuff and the ones without prescription) and maybe like first aid stuff.

I used to be really bad about leaving laundry in baskets and once in a while we get busy and it'll sit but now a days I start a load of laundry in the morning while we are all getting ready for the day and then itll dry while I'm at work and when I get home it is routine now to pull it out and fold it and put it away. The only things that dont seem to be put away as neatly as I would like are my older two kids clothes because they are old enough to tend to it themselves and at that stage that they need to learn to manage it themselves but every so often I go in and clean my way in their spaces too.

So I tried that and BAM pearly white toilet bowl! I was amazed lol... and any residue that was still there came off easily with regular toilet brush. I'm employing that tactic from now on, for sure...

For the future, I hear that if you empty the bowl of all the water first (after wetting the stone a bit first) it'll make the pumice stone last longer. Because the water basically dissolves it a little bit to use it properly, but if it's all wet then it just breaks down faster.

2 teens sharing a bathroom is fine! I used to share a bathroom with my 3 other siblings growing up. There will probably be arguments but it will be fine :) They'll figure it out. Sharing a bathroom means that they will learn to only use the bathroom for things they have to use it for (like showering etc.) and do everything else in their room (like hair, makeup etc.).

I'd say Gatlinburg Tenn would be a fantastic trip for your children. The Christmas lights are still up through February.

Gatlinburg is awesome! Also a tubing place called Hawks nest in NC. I think it is close to Boone. Boone is wonderful! It’s like being in Colorado!

I live near Asheville, NC. I have been to Boone and Gatlinburg both. Gatlinburg has a lot more things to do. It is also close to Pigeon Forge and both areas have so many family friendly things to do. Boone is more of a college town.

We have one bathroom for the whole house, so a separate kids bathroom sounds wonderful! I wouldn't think it would cause too much distress for a brother and sister to share. That's just my viewpoint, but I'm sure there are pros and cons to that! :)

Amy, do you have any suggestions on organizing/storing garden flags?

Oh the bathroom struggles! We have one full bath to share between four people! The rules in our house: hair, skincare and makeup routines are done in bedrooms or the half bath downstairs. Anything having to do with water (washing, toilets, showering, teeth brushing) is the only reason why you’re allowed in the bathroom. And shower time is limited to 30 minutes because there was some rule bending with that one!

Yes! All 3 of my kids have different personalities. My sister and I are like that too. It's crazy how different you can be coming from the same parents, raised the same way. I've worked at our small town pharmacy for years and see it with so many families. Even twins can be so different. Kids are different from their parents too! I have 2 girls and 1 boy. Our boy is 7 and uses our master bathroom most of the time. Our girls argue over their bathroom pretty regularly. 🤪

We do a lot of experiences for Christmas gifts. Gift cards for snow tubing, mini golf, movie theaters, bowling alley, trampoline or climbing parks. We also do “trips” as part of their Christmas gifts (maybe they get souvenir money or something, or experiences within the trips). Hope this helps!

Gatlinburg is great but there is ALOT of tourists so you spend a lot more time in the car really than anything I used to live there so personally I would go to Boone area. My family has gone up to Boone numerous times over the years in multiple different times of the year and it is always so beautiful and breathtaking no matter how many times you go
