I will say that despite it's lack of visibility and space, the turbo CX-30 is gonna be a beast. Also, absolutely fantastic analogy with the crosstrek being a nice hiking boot while the cx-30 is more like a nice leather boot.

One of my good friends used to have a crosstrek and I will say, with a good set of tires, it's really incredible the level of grip the crosstrek has even on stock suspension. You have a lot of handling capability overhead with them

@@schuylerhecht8253 The AWD in the crosstrek is considered "dumb" mechanical symmetrical AWD, in that it lacks sophisticated electronics to balance torque or optimize efficiency by reducing friction by not giving power to tires when not needed. The best AWD systems for example can send 100% of power to the front wheels or even one of the front wheels with electronic clutches, and limit themselves to RWD or FWD for greater efficiency when not needed. The REALLY best AWD systems are like Mercedes where they also have active suspensions that can "bounce" the suspension automatically for things like beaches and loose dirt to get out of, and that's why they cost a fortune. Search "Outback TFL goldmine hill fail", and you can see the latest Outback failed to get up it even though cheap subcompacts like the Renegade did make it.

So crazy! I had these 2 models as my finalists but I think I am going with the Crosstrek. Mazda felt more luxurious. Looked more luxurious and first impression was more wow, but the Crosstrek just drove better in my opinion and the seats were way more comfortable. Add the fact that the Ctosstrek is made in Japan while the CX30 is made in Mexico was the deal breaker for me. Was not an easy choice to make though.

I talked to a tech and he said mazda built in Mexico are very good and durable comfort wise.everyone that touches that car is accountable down to the time and date of what was done to it.So if there is a failure--say a seat belt latch and it goes in for warranty--they can tag it and send the report to the factory to see who or what made a mistake if any.I just had a KIA Stinger made in korea and it was very well built and the mazda CX-30 i just bought feels even better,My stinger jumped in value so i sold it and was able to buy a fully loaded cx-30 premium plus and put several thousands--almpst 9k in the bank.So I own the CX-30 and all its insurance--gas and maintenence are paid for for the next 5 years.In the CUV market and I have driven most of them and wanted a GLA 45 AMG--this mazda is in 2nd place behind the AMG,I could have used all of my cars bank account and also bought the AMG outright--but I am going to enjoy this CX-30 at least till 2025 and maybe by then the KONA N comes out in AWD and under 45k.BTW I bought the CX-30 at Hyundai and they gave me the 10 year 100k warranty on the CX-30s powertrain--so it was a no brainer to buy it and shows they are dependable.The AMG also has spotty reliability and the subaru is not even close to being sporty enough--I do more spirited driving then offroad==so cx-30 was the choice.

@@HallowsawQuiet ride means I driver get to enough music with a much lower volume, much more enjoyable and much safer. Plus better insulation improve sound quality dramatically. Noise level is a major criteria when compare comfort, all luxury brand offers quieter cars.

I recently traded my Mazda CX-5 for a 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Limited. Best decision I’ve ever made. Crosstrek has more room and more engine power.

I think it depends on what the buyer is looking for. The Mazda has more of a premium luxurious feel and look, as the Subaru look is more rugged/entry level and looks as if take me directly off road peeps. Both are great vehicles and either way i think buyers will be satisfied with both. Great Review!

Well said. Mazda does so many things better, like steering, interior, transmission, available low-end torque in low RPMs, but it has serious visibility constraints. Huge A pillars, and good luck seeing out the back window, even without rear passengers. Door sills up by your neck, you feel entombed. I'm not that short (5'10"), but there will be people > 6' who'll claim they can see out just fine. Test drive it with visibility in mind, then try a Crosstrek. It's odd how the Crosstrek & the CX-30 are competitors, but they're different in so many ways. If you want something that feels high end & don't want to get stuck on bad roads & don't mind the feel of FWD, the Mazda makes more sense. You want to get more aggressive & tend to go on really rough terrain & would like to throw things into the car like camping gear, bikes, paddle boards, etc, you won't top yourself if you scuff up the trunk or put a scratch in a seat if you have a Crosstrek.

@@BaconatorJames you guys got it right. Both are crossovers. For those that want a crossover that feels and performs like a car, who only use the car on road, the Mazda might be the better choice. If you like camping, kayaking, skiing, etc., but didn't want an offroading suv, the Subaru is the better choice. Subaru's put more thought into the outdoors person. You can see it on the raised roof racks and superior ground clearance. No, it's not a rock crawler, but it is more designed for that outdoors person. If I didn't do those things, I'd give more thought to the Mazda.

@@chrisfrye5730 Agreed. With only 182hp, the Crosstrek isn't fooling anyone that it's a mean offroader. It can handle rougher terrain than you'd think, but it's doing it slowly. Subaru's low-tech AWD system is still the best I've tried. Traction in rough weather is a given, most systems work for that. It's the feel of the back wheels pushing as well that gives you confidence. I don't like to remain brand loyal, so if I end up with a car of the same brand, it's because I've done my homework or there's something the brand offers that I can't do without. Subarus have been a niche 'yuppy' brand for years. They're not pretty inside, they're dowdy outside. Subaru knows their target audience well. The niche is key to these designers. Car models get bigger & bloated every year so as to compete with the competition on "The X has the most Y when compared to Z". The CRV, RAV4, Forester, etc - they all began about half the size they are now, growing "with the generation that bought them". More kids, need more space. For those who don't have kids or just need a second, smaller car & still want ground clearance & AWD, a smaller model is born to fill that gap. SUV becomes CUV. The Forester got too big, hence the Crosstrek. The CX-5 begat the CX-3. The CRV begat the HRV. The RAV4 begat the CH-R. etc... I appreciate luxury, but giving up the agility, the parking lot maneuvering, driving in narrow lanes - I opt for the CUV. One thing I'm really disappointed in these days is the general lack of power. I'm in a minority I guess, since most people just want a car "with enough power". It's not just transportation & convenience to me. I love to drive. I love to drive pretty well any car, cheap or expensive (with the exceptions of the Plymouth Sundance & Lada, which were abusively bad). With EV's coming, we'll finally get our power. When Mazda threatened 250hp & 300 ft lbs of torque, I instantly responded. I respect what they've done. The '93 octane' thing is quite annoying, but I can respect they're competing with emission standards. Subaru dropped their 250hp Forester due to only 6% of their buyers opting for it. I test drove the last model year they sold the Forester XT and while it has 250hp, it's a lot like the Mazda - it's jarring but not in a good way. The transmission grunts & the engine sounds like it's begging for mercy. Audi, IMO, make the best drivers' cars. They're out of my price range so I try to get as close to them as I can. Mazda's interiors look a lot like Audi. The touchscreens are still ridiculously small (for correct screensize, see the 2021 Subaru Legacy). In the EU, you can get the RS Q3. The 'S' version of their smaller Q3 CUV, but with 350hp, 4.5s 0-100 kmh. That's it, that's the car I want. I'd make sacrifices, work overtime, but mostly I'd just be happy there's something there for people who want more that 'enough'. Mazda came closer than any other CUV on the market, but every model iteration & my current car is paid for, I drive all the competition. Honda HRV: Dangerously slow. Inferior AWD to the entire market. Honda CRV: Not worth the price, but they're actually fantastic. Not bad power, if 'enough' is your target. Inferior AWD to the entire market. Mazda CX-5: Best i've driven in the SUV market, back in 2016. Enough power. You could see out of them. They've grown too big since. Mazda CX-3: As always, the best interior quality & appearance. For the price of a Honda HRV, but now you can't see out the back window & the back seat room is only good for contortionists. The salesman lied & said their AWD is superior to Subaru & he directed me to a KZbin vid that was trying to prove it. It was misinformation. Plus, if I hear that unforgiveable "zoom zoom" one more time. He said it twice when I asked about handling/power. Subaru Forester: No longer have power. Their top of the line Forester ($51k CDN) doesn't have automatic passenger seats. It's grown too big. Subaru Crosstrek: A little more power added, and their low-end torque is back if you use S mode at least in the city. I love it. It's too long & the touchscreen is too small, and you have to manually disable that EVIL feature that shuts your engine off when idling. The sport model isn't sporty at all. The Premium (or whatever the flagship model is called in the US) is IMO the best in class all around. Has X-Mode in case you get stuck in deep stuff. Toyota RAV-4: I took one look in the cockpit & walked out. Toyota make the most reliable cars in the world, but when someone gets out of a Subaru and finds the RAV-4's interior to be hideous & institutional, you've got a problem. I've always wanted to buy a Toyota, but like Mazda, they manage to do something stupid in their design. Nissan: I was forced to watch 3 Nissan commercials in a row on an overseas flight once, during the "no headphones, wait for the seatbelt sign to light up" phase. Couldn't turn the volume down. Then I saw the same Nissan commercial play another 3 times at a theatre during the spam/previews. Nissan can take their unreliable lineup & stick em.

Thank goodness my kid turned 16 and gave me an excuse to pass it to him. We had gotten into kayaking and hiking and I wanted something good in the snow and capable of easily handling the kayaks. So I ended up with a Tacoma, but I did eyeball the Outback pretty close. I do miss the agility and everything that you mentioned I'd get back in a CUV, so I'm always shopping and researching for my next car, even if it might be years away. I don't think I'll ever get a FWD again while living up here. The snow tires helped a lot, of course, really important. But give me some ground clearance and more tires in on the action. I looked at the Rav4. I didn't like the visibility in it. Out the front was okay, but I had a hard time with the sides and the back. My mom's Forester has great visibility.

@@chrisfrye5730 You deserve a medal for reading my post, I went on way too much! The Corolla is possibly the best 'generic' car that's ever been sold. You said it, boringly reliable & what better car to get someone for their first car. That Tacoma is the best looking truck. I love them. They're out of my league for overall size, but the main thing that I'd miss would be the ability to cover the bed (though I know you can get a cover or a cab cover for it). I also had FWD for most of my life. I've had Hondas since I was 19 (I had a Triumph TR7 for my first car, a VW Rabbit convertible when I was 17 & 18). The best overall car I've owned was a Honda Fit ('09 and '15). You can put a bike in the backseat, upright, since the seat bases fold up. I drove 1900 kms at once a few yrs ago & it was so easy since I could fully stretch out in the back with the seats all folded flat & got hours of sleep at rest stops. Helped friends move with it, even. After a few harsh winters, I got my first AWD (Subaru WRX). I got it with the (I know, ugh) CVT transmission. It was meant to be a Toronto car & traffic there is horrible. I ended up staying in Atlantic Canada so the snow is as bad as anywhere. All the people in my building would be digging for hours - I'd clear off my windows, signal lights, headlights & despite its low ground clearance, the wheels didn't even spin when I drove out of snow as deep as the hood scoop. Turning off TCS on a newly-plowed but snow-packed road & gunning it in a WRX is an incredibly good time. Steer with the throttle & parking brake, turbo's chirping away, it's so fun. I've got 4 steelies with winters which were thrown in free by Subaru when I bought it. Agree re: visibility. Seems like a trend now, this bad rear view. Even the new Tesla Y has that problem (though the cameras give a much better view on the massive screen, you need to keep those cameras clean from snow/grit, etc). Being in a Subaru or Audi kind of spoils you for visibility, and the Honda Fit was even better. I do miss being up higher sometimes though, and even the Crosstrek is up higher enough that you're able to see much better. I'm happy as long as I can see the outer extremities of the car. Mazda were by far the worst for rear visibility, and for two times I was in the market for one (CX-3, CX-30GT), the main reason I passed on them was the visibility. Why do Mazda go so far by hitting it out of the park in so many areas but then they adhere to a design that's actually a flaw...

Drove both car and chose Subaru in the end. Subaru felt like it had a lot more power and easier to maneuver and ride despite of having similar horsepower. Mazda looked luxurious but not as practical. Crosstrek won on the utility and versatility.

My choices genuinely came down to these two, and I really wanted to go with the Mazda for the fit and finish reasons. The main reasons I didn't go with the Mazda: - The interior space, rear legroom, and cargo space (1280L vs 1565L) with seats folded is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller in the CX-30. This was not emphasized enough in the video. Legroom is really tight in the back seat. - The AWD system on the Mazda could not overcome a roller test using power from a single rear wheel. (the crosstrek was able to pass this relatively easily) - Personal preference, but I find the plastic body cladding on the Mazda to be incredibly ugly. The rest of the car is gorgeous, but they've really messed up in that regard. - There are only 1 and a half inch hitch receivers available for the Mazda.

For me, the deal breaker for CX-30 is that its gas tank is 12.7 gal vs 16.6 gal on the Crosstrek. Consider that people usually went to refill at around 2 gal, the CX-30 is almost at only 60% of the capacity of the Crosstrek.

Exactly the two vehicles that were on my shortlist. Had to make 3 test drives each to take a decision. Ended up with the CX-30 for the ride quality and its handling. It's just more fun to drive. At 6'3", i'm not cramped behind the wheels. Only person going on the back seat is my loyal German Shepherd so room in the back wasn't an issue. That 6-speed just works better for me too. Pretty good in deep snow, might I add. But hey, they're two very strong choices. You can't go wrong with them. Just pick your favourite.

@Stereo Typist The GT Line, which is the top trim. I got a discount from Carcost Canada so it came down to 33 500 $CAN. It's a tad more than the Outdoor trim for the Crosstrek (Sport trim in USA) but the CX-30 is much more refined than the Crosstrek. Built quality, especially for the interior of the CX-30, is by far best in class. It's built to last long. And it's so comfortable. For what I personally need to do with my car, it's a perfect fit.

I just don't understand why people are buying these cars if not for the AWD and utility capabilities, which are superior in the Crosstrek. If it was for pure driving reasons, I would have gone with an AWD Mazda 3 hatch (which, hilariously, has larger cargo capacity than the CX-30).

@@downhillupside I think because a lot of folks like the way the cx30 looks, it is super fun to drive and the interior is superior to others in its class. It feels, looks and drives like a premium and luxurious car. Plus people are obsessed with crossover vehicles that have AWD and are higher off the ground so that’s why the cx30 over the Mazda 3.

@@orlandos2000 I totally get all that, but as a utility vehicle, the Mazda 3 actually has more cargo capacity than the CX-30. The only benefit to the CX-30 is the 1.4 inch ground clearance difference from the Mazda 3. But it's ONLY 1.4 inches, along with the extremely poor approach angles. It makes the CX-30 kind of useless for anything other than a pavement vehicle - in which case, why not the Mazda 3?

Right now, the cx-30 is the new kid on the block so naturally folks want that one when deciding between the 2. My friend just got a cx-30 just like the one in this review and I admit, seeing folks turn their heads trying to figure out what car your in is kinda fun. The car looks sharp - especially at night.

The CX30 AWD premium is my first suv/AWD. I was driving manual GTI’s, GLI’s and most recently a ‘19 Civic Si coupe. That car had no lumbar support and my 53 year old back couldn’t take it. Mazda is a tight sporty fun car with excellent leather seats. Excellent back support and I am no longer fatigued with horrible back pain like I had in the VW’s and Hondas. Only gripe is poor suburban gas mileage. Cheap Bridgestone Turanzas could have something to do with it. Will change out for Pirelli Cinturato II’s

The Subaru is a real SUV and it doesn't have that cramped, low visibility feeling in the back the Mazda has. And it rides great. I think the Subaru is the more honest, down-to-earth vehicle here. Mazda is better as a sedan, a premium sedan or hatch.

Yea.. I say the Toyota 4 Runner is even more of a real SUV. Yes I know it’s bigger, but It’s got 4WD, tons of off road features especially Locking diff, and Crawl Control. And it’s got a 5 speed. It’s an old school transmission, but at least it’s peppy and not a CVT. The Crosstrek is more of a raised Impreza hatchback like every other new vehicle

I’m 5.10 ft tall and I barely sit up straight in the back row. My head touches the ceiling a little bit. And the CVT doesn’t necessarily perform well and they don’t last really long unlike the old 5 speed auto. The reason I suggested a 4 Runner is because its currently in my first car list. I’m currently 18 years old and I couldn’t even decide what I want as my first car!! Trust me.. it’s a lot for me!! LOL 😂

So first off, with the Subaru, you can turn off the beeping noise when cars enter your lane in the settings. You failed to do that. Second, you mentioned that it was following pretty closely with the adaptive cruise control and that Mazda's is much more conservative...but you had the following distance set to the smallest distance as denoted by the single line above the car emblem on the center display. Did you not wonder what those up and down arrows to the left of the cruise control speed knob do? You simply have to increase the following distance to your liking. This whole review was pretty skewed towards the Mazda mostly based on aesthetics when you didn't really give the Subaru its due diligence where it truly shines. Crosstrek all the way for the lifestyle and utility that it lends to.

You can always spot an owner in the comments, they get a little defensive when reviews don't go the way they want. I don't own either car in this case, so without a chip in the game I can say the review looked the opposite of biased. He must have said a dozen times if you want X, get the Subaru, if you want Y, get the Mazda, they're both great for the class, etc etc. I get it if you're loyal to Subaru, and pointing out any Crosstrek advantages is legit, but this review just wasn't biased.

Great, largely unbiased review of both cars. My question is this: WHY DO SO FEW PEOPLE NOTICE OR COMMENT OR CARE ABOUT VISIBILITY ISSUES WITH MAZDAS?! I had a Mazda Protege for 12 years and loved it. Only got rid of it because it was stick shift and my son was learning to drive; in a big city the driving itself is quite enough to master. Bought a Mazda 3 hatchback. Speedy, responsive, cute, but the worst visibility due to the enormous PILLAR between the windshield and the driver's door. Didn't notice it during routine test drive, that's on me. My son and I both had many scary incidents of seeing a pedestrian walk out of "nowhere", to right in front of the car at stop signs, for example. My father had a Subaru Forester and I always loved the fishbowl view, zero blind spots. I resolved to sell the Mazda and take the financial hit. Could NOT drive the Mazda 3 anymore. Luckily, my son had a small, no injury accident soon after, with a pole on an icy day and the exterior was very crumpled, so I got reimbursed for the PURCHASE price I had paid, by insurance and I walked straight into a Subaru dealership. Been very happy with my Forester, especially the sightlines, and will likely go for the Crosstrek when I replace for something smaller. I find it shocking that Mazda and the majority of their customers, don't rate visibility as a major priority. I'll take cheaper looking interior and a little wind noise any day over driving blind. Lace up the hiking boot!

The redesigned crosstrek in a couple of years should fix that - i hope. Thats my issue with the subaru too, and i'd like them to make the 2.5L a base engine so its offered throughout the line up. I dont want to have to spring for a higher spec model just to get a run of the mill 2.5L.

Hopefully , have a 2018 and now have an infant so those lack of vents are almost dealbreaker. AC isn’t very strong either, maybe the 2.5 will fix that

The Crosstrek also only has only single-zone heating/AC in front and the driver and passenger seats are not very adjustable. Plus it is REALLY noisy when accelerating. You are are paying the same price for a sort of bare-bones car compared to the CX-30 (which also handles better..... I have driven both while looking for a replacement for my 2014 Forester XLT 2.5L turbo). Subaru better watch their back because Mazda and the others are providing much better value in this segment.

I spent the last 6 months doing research, test driving and test driving. It came down to these two for my choice. I finally decided on the CX30 turbo. I was looking for an AWD commuter that would be fun to drive, comfortable and luxurious. These really are two different vehicles for people with 2 different tastes and needs. I hike and kayak but don't need the AWD system of the Subaru to do this with. Mazda has done an outstanding job on the interior, fit and finish of the CX30.

The Crosstrek is easier to get in and out of for us older folks. Subaru has done an amazing job with so much interior space and all of our family drivers from short and petite to tall and hefty, can find a comfortable driving position. Where we live ground clearance does make a difference in winter driving as some storms bring near 5 feet of snow over a just few days. The road crews try to keep up, but residential streets sometimes get deep enough to high center cars and even dedicated snow tires wont help if the car's belly slides up on top of the snow and the tires no longer contact the road. Not saying the Mazda isn't a great vehicle, I like that it comes with an automatic instead of the CVT, and it does have great looks, and if you live in a city that isn't in the top 10 for snowfall per season, I'm sure it would do fine. Even here if you lived on a well maintained road it would likely have adequate clearance. Maybe the hiking boot to leather boot is a good comparison, what ever is most comfortable for you.

Bought a Soul Red CX-30 Turbo Premium Plus almost half a year ago and have loved almost every part of it. Main reason I chose this over the Crosstrek was the combination of luxury feel, decent amount of power (0-60 in 5.8 seconds) and overall quality. It just feels better to me, 8 inches of ground clearance is enough for this type of car (only 0.7-inch difference to the Crosstrek) and the 6-speed auto just feels so much smoother over the Crosstrek's CVT. Only thing I liked better on the Crosstrek was the overall visibility, it definitely is better in the Subaru. Anyways, bias aside, this is a great comparison!

I test drove the CX-30GT Turbo a couple of weeks ago. Loaded with features, very comfortable, more tech than all the competition. Bose sound is very good, and unlike most, I don't mind the non-touch touchscreen adjustment. Transmission is great, but it won't let you rev to redline in manual mode. Power is very good, best in the category - but the engine sounds hilariously bad. The real power comes from using 93 octane fuel, which limits you. You can NOT disable the traction control, so if you want to have any fun in the snow, that's been cancelled. The power's just uneven & feels gimmick-like, it's hard to explain - it doesn't really serve a purpose for the type of car this is. The handling is mediocre, quite soft. The Crosstrek Limited handles better & despite the amount of hate out there for CVT's, they just make more sense for a car like this. If you're used to a Subaru AWD system and like the feel of the back wheels pushing you, forget it in this one. It's VERY front wheel drive unless the back wheels are needed for traction. If you prefer a Honda Civic to, say, a WRX, you're in luck with this car. The ride is very quiet and refined. Very peaceful, except for the appliance-like groan of the engine. It might have 250hp if you find 93octane fuel, but it sounds like a Honda Fit on the inside (with much less road noise). The steering wheel feels cheap. It's too thin, especially on the bottom part. It's heated though, which is nice. Controls are NOT intuitive on the steering wheel. Most buttons are well laid out, but some buttons are recessed & terribly awkward. The gauge cluster is awful. In almost every steering wheel position, you can't see the signal light indicators. You can't see the speedometer in almost any position either, so the gauge real estate is wasted with two fuel gauges & if you want a digital speedo, you'll have to rely on the HUD display (not a prob for me, but many will). The colors do go very well together inside. There are no USB ports for back seat passengers, and much like Subaru, for a $40k CDN car, you're not getting an automatic passenger seat. It's a very good looking car, a very good quality brand and has great resale. It's offered in very attractive colors (picture Volkswagen, but reliable). The 'zoom zoom' slogan makes me want to vomit - it's mindless schtick that means nothing to anyone trying to make a very expensive decision. The main reason I completely dismissed this car from my list: The visibility. The window sills are up by your neck (I'm 5'10") unless you crank the seat up almost all the way, and the thick A-pillars are massive, hiding a dangerous amount of view. The dash is also very high, and rear visibility is so terribly absent, I'm amazed the car is even street legal. Yes, there's a backup camera and despite being on a very small sliver in the dash, it's helpful. That said, you'll feel like you're wrapped up in a coffin. If you're claustrophobic, you'll panic in this car. The sunroof helps with a semblance of space, but the windshield is very short, and you won't see the extremities of the car from the inside. If you're getting out of a Subaru and into this car, you'll see what I'm talking about. Subarus have fantastic visibility - you're in a fishbowl. Mazda self-sabotages in their design, obviously listening to no one. They insist on an extra-long hood (30% more than needed for the engine), and they drive up the interior dimensions but jacking up the rear of the car & putting a symbolic sliver of glass that acts like a rear windshield. The rear view is further impeded by the large headrests in the back seat. The back seat is just ok - but for the size of the car, it should be better. You feel absolutely wrapped up in there. Back seat passengers sit very high, blocking the rear window even more. I turned on the rear wiper & saw maybe 25% of its journey back & forth. Mazda did the same with the CX-3, and just stood around wondering they weren't selling (ignoring the rear passengers with their knees up by their ears & the fact someone might want to go backwards in it). Rather than fixing the obvious design flaw of not being able to see out of the car, they passed it up to the CX-30GT Turbo, hoping some horsepower would fix it. The CX-5 has much better visibility & was best in the class of all I test drove in its category (including the Forester), but lately it's done the same as the Forester - it keeps getting fatter so they can play the "there's more space in our SUV" game. Each model will get fatter & fatter so they can introduce a smaller crossover to fill the gap in the market. You could put two 2009 CX-5's in the space of the current one (exaggeration of course, but you get it). Same goes for the Forester. Mazda need to have a long, terse chat with their design dept. Their quality, power, handling and interiors are, warts and all, still best in class - but they need to start test driving the competition. I'm choosing the Crosstrek Limited (0nly 182hp) over the CX-30 GT Turbo begrudgingly. There are a lot of things I don't like about the Crosstrek, but being able to see out, the far superior AWD of the Subaru & the fact the Mazda's engine sound annoyed me in the first 30 mins are huge factors. 93 octane? Gimme a break! My brother's WRX gets 270hp on 91 octane. People who get a turbo aren't in the business of maximizing fuel economy, and leaving the TCS in one god-mode is a huge raincloud on any fun you'll have with AWD.

Salesman told me (after checking with someone else on the sales staff) that it can't be disabled, but if what you're saying is right, I'll make an edit to my post in case it matters. Do you know by chance if the offroad mode is like, for example, turning off all the TCS features in a Subaru, or is it like Subaru's X Mode? I disable both layers of TCS on my brother's WRX with a button just left of the steering wheel, and you can floor it in snow or mud, and it's just you & the AWD. Most fun I've had driving, through almost empty city streets during a snow storm, sideways the whole way, turbo chirping, etc. I wouldn't want to be denied a toned-down version of that if I'm paying so much for a CX-30GT.

I just bought the 2021 Crosstrek Limited after driving both vehicles, and it was mostly due to visibility as well. I felt too closed in inside the Mazda. I also like the larger gas tank in the Crosstrek. As for engine noise, I thought the Mazda was a bit quieter, but it wasn't smoother. I liked the ride better in the Crosstrek. Now, if the Crosstrek was as quiet in the cabin as the Mazda is, it would be almost perfect. Looks are subjective too. I personally think the plastic cladding on the Crosstrek fits it well, but it looks cheap on the Mazda.

As a millennial buying a daily driver whose main purpose will be hauling around my dog, I test drove both of these. I didn't like the Mazda at all. I hated the stupid click wheel for the infotainment center, I really didn't care for the turbo lag, and I did not like how grandma the "premium interior" felt. I felt like I was driving my 63 year old mom's Cadillac. I went with the Crosstrek for the larger naturally aspirated engine, for a car that felt like it should have a dog in it, and for the larger interior space. If we go hiking somewhere then we'll be in a car that will tackle the terrain.

I owned a CX5 and just loved it the first 3 years. After that it became extremely road noisy and jumpy all over the road to the point that I felt insecure and anoid. I traded it for a Sorento. I don't know if Mazda improved this fact by installing better/higher end suspension on its Mazda SUVs.

6:55 iStop is still available in markets outside the US. The US EPA gas mileage isn’t affected by stop-start and hence Mazda USA decided to remove it. That said, Mazda has among the quickest start-stop systems out there due to the way it’s configured to stop exactly at the right point of the stroke. Mazda is pedantic when it comes to delays getting the way of the driver. Human-interaction studies done in-house showed than 300ms (3/10ths second) is the most an average driver will accept before something feels slow. In this regard they got iStop down to 350ms when introduced which is roughly 1/2 the time of other systems. Mazda won a Japanese technology of the year award for the first implementation of it. They’ve since reduced it to 300ms. Subaru on the other hand is closer to 700ms - which is fairly normal but painfully slow The 300ms rule is also why Mazda refuses to use CVT’s as CVT’s have major delay penalties between time of accelerator depress and engine responding as expected. But in order to speed up their torque converter they relocated clutch plates and have them lock up most of the time, reducing the response significantly and giving it a direct feeling as close to dual-clutch without the penalty of clunky first 2 gears

The Eyesight system Subaru uses for AEB and cruise is a standout. Often in testing in the class Subarus AEB is often leading the lack, so expect cruise to be very effective as well. Although find it odd that the Outback does 5 km/h increments in my home countries of Japan and Australia whereas the Mazda does 1 km/h increments.

The CX-30 doesn't offer a trailer hitch option, was not designed for one and if an aftermarket hitch is installed will, probably, void the transmission warranty.

We just compared these two cars in January - the car would be used for work commute and canoe camping. So there will definitely be plenty of northern WI gravel and dirt roads to be had. We drove both cars back-to-back. We first drove the CrossTrek Sport, and really liked it - far better than I expected, even though it feels more utilitarian than anything we have ever driven prior. One thing I really like about the CrossTrek is the range. With its 16.6 gal tank, you get a range of well over 500 miles on the HWY. I could easily drive from Madison, WI to the Boundary Waters in MN on a single tank of gas, fill it up in Grand Marais and not have to worry about filling up again if drove up and down the Gunflint Trail several times. I also like the seat-back protector in the cargo area. Great option when you fold the rear seats down, and load up the rear with gear. ...dirty gear. Wish the CX-30 offered this as an option. But when we drove the CX-30, the fit, finish and ride felt so much better and more refined in the CX-30. The Carbon Edition is just damn sexy inside and out, especially with its red leather interior on the inside. We chose the CX-30 for a couple of reasons. 1. If I'm going to drive the CX-30 4-5 hours north of my home for canoe camping, I'd like to ride in comfort and style. The Mazda has that in spades. The ride, handling and performance reminds of the 1993 manual 6-cylinder Mazda 626 we had back in the day. I loved that car - felt like it was the best car Mazda had built that wasn't the 1993 Mazda RX-7. And I actually may prefer this CX-30 over that fantastic 1993 626. 2. The 8" ground clearance in the 2023 Mazda CX-30 is more than enough for gravel/rocky and dirt roads. So there was no appreciable benefit of the CrossTrek here, even though it's 0.7" higher than the Mazda. 3. I know it's polarizing, but I do appreciate the extra plastic cladding on the lower part of the CX-30. Some people think it's ugly for a car, and they're probably right. But on gravel and dirt roads, that cladding is going to protect the paint on the bottom of the car, so it's much more functional than most people believe. Mazda knocked it out of the park with the CX-30; with seemingly the perfect blend of style/comfort, ride/handling and utility. ...CX-30 and CrossTrek are equally capable on dirt and gravel roads. The CX-30 easily fits my fishing rods, kayak paddles, fishing net and fishing gear, tent and camp gear, as well as my canoe on the roof. The CX-30 fits in beautifully right below the CX-50, which we also considered, but wanted something smaller, as we already have a Honda Pilot as a family hauler.

Perfect for us for whipping around town to stores, games, and functions. Much easier to park in the city than the Pilot. …Plus, I don’t have to sit back there.

The CX-30 definitely blows the Crosstrek away in terms of style and comfort. Like you said, the Carbon edition is just jaw dropping. The Crosstrek isn’t trying to be a luxury car in all fairness and seems to revel in its plain, utilitarian and rugged design. You really can’t go wrong with either, it just becomes a matter of taste at a certain point.

Still a valid comparison. I test drove both and decided on the Crosstrek Limited, it was no contest for me. reasons: 1) Much more space, especially in the back,. CX-30 backseats are unusable for an adult. 2) better mileage for the Crosstrek and much larger gas tank (less fueling stops) 3) better resale value 4) softer suspension work better on bumpy roads (which there are many where I live). 5) When using Subaru VIP program, you can buy this for below MSRP 6) Love their AWD. Drives like a train on bad/ snowy / slippery roads 7) much better visibility 8) Subaru Eyesight driver assist features seem better than Mazda's Mazda pluses: 1) more luxurious experience, nicer interior 2) Firmer suspension - great for highway driving 3) lower MSRP price (for comparable) 4) Feels sportier, great engine response

Wow I couldn’t disagree with you more. I test drove both and to me CrossTrek was far superior - such that I bought the 2021 CrossTrek Limited. I much preferred the drive, the handling, the acceleration (esp. in S-mode), the SPACIOUSNESS and visibility of the CrossTrek. I loved the larger info-tainment screen in the CrossTrek and disliked the tiny CX30 screen on the dash - I found it hard to see and more distracting since it’s so high, and made for terrible viewing of maps (ie using Apple Car Play) - the larger screen in the CrossTrek makes for much better map viewing / navigation. AND of course there’s the famous Subaru full time AWD - makes for much better driving, cornering and handling - especially in inclement weather and winter. The Mazda felt cramped and looking in its rear view mirror, I could barely see, was like looking down into a tunnel. Didn’t like the CX30’s interior as much compared to the CrossTrek. To each their own ;-) P.S. Don’t think you realize you have the option to TURN OFF the engine shut-off functionality in the CrossTrek - I think it’s a nice feature to save gas at stop lights, but you can disable it if you don’t like it.

I've been looking at the Crosstrek and was wondering about fuel mileage. I commute 106 miles a day so I don't want to be filling up every 3 days. How is the fuel mileage? I have about 60% highway and 40% city driving commute. Thanks!

@@kristindenney6455 Fuel mileage seems normal. It’s rated 29mpg (2.5L engine) city/hwy combined. My gauge says 26mpg, but I’ve only had the car less than a month, so engine is still breaking in, and I’ve been doing mostly city driving. Also the Auto Stop-Start feature is supposed to save you gas while idling at stop lights etc. (which you can turn off if you don’t like it). I’ll see how it goes ;-)

I have way different thought on both since i own CX-30 and my parents own XV (european equvalent of Crosstrek). In my opinion Crosstrek is build better, it handles better on the road, it's way more confortable and specious (besides trunk). Overall is more fun to drive for me. I like my CX-30 too, but it's almost impossible to take it off the pavement. It's a good car but Crosstrek is better.

On the money evaluation. I've driven both and I agree with you. CX30 is more luxurious and rivals Audi and BMW. Crosstrek is a blue collar off the trail vehicle. Both are solid cars in their class. My preference would be the CX30.

Mazda ... suits my “dressy” business urban lifestyle and wilderness weekend warrior needs ‼️💥 And so much so I bought the 2021 CX30 GT . Why I didn’t buy the Subaru -> asked people who were either unloading or entering their vehicles & number one complaint was frequent visits to maintenance/ servicing . When at the showroom of Mazda they toured me around everywhere including back of house service department ... honestly the best way to describe the service department is like the stereotypical MayTag repair men ... not a lot going on & only need to do oil changes once per year. Lowest maintenance engine.

11:15: Crosstrek "Under normal driving circumstances it will sit around 2-3000rpm..." This isn't true. You can see the tach settle back to 1100 at steady state. If you are driving this normally both cars will cruise quietly. If you spend a lot of time with modern Subaru's you'll get to feel how tight they are to the economy engine-map at light throttle. In real world traffic the ECU will give the engine to 2000-2500 for city acceleration, and that will be fine. If you are dipping into the throttle more aggressively, then the ECU gives you 3000 and above. Basically, in the city with actual cars around you and nowhere to go and nowhere to speed, the Subaru engine map is going to "encourage" you to drive efficiently.

For me it came down to the CX-30 and the Crosstrek. I was concerned with the leg room in the back seat of the CX-30 and I just handed down my 2013 Mazda3 hatch to my daughter so I decided to try a Subaru. I went with the Crosstrek Sport. We went on a road trip to Yosemite and when the missus or the kiddo were driving I sat in the back and it was comfy. I don’t like that there wasn’t a vent in the back though. The missus also liked the ride of the Crosstrek better than her GLA250 hatch. I do too except when I’m driving winding mountain roads. The GLA250 has much firmer handling.

If you like hiking, snowing, camping, fishing etc outdoor activities with confidence, then crosstrek. If you are city drivers, only heads to the outdoor activities few times a year, then CX30.

That is the heads up display. its only blinking cause its on camera. Its very easy to look at OR turn off while driving.

The adaptive cruise control "follow" distance is easily adjustable from the steering wheel (two big buttons). 12:48 and it's not radar guided, it's stereo color camera based sytem.

my best friend got a cx-30 and i got a crosstrek the crosstrek handles significantly better and the awd is far better although the mazda is a little quicker and has a much nicer interior

Both could use flat bottom steering wheels. Subaru really needs to take better measures to quell their road noise. Solid inner door panels, thicker, laminated glass, more sound absorbing materials under the carpet, etc., etc. They don't have to go full-Lexus, but they need to improve from where they are now...across their entire model range.

I own a 2013 Crosstrek and recently test drove these cars back to back. Agree with your assessment. Was hoping the new Trek would have less wind noise than my old one but alas it's about the same. I wonder if the beefy roof rails are the culprit. However I didn't get a chance to drive the Mazda or the Limited on rougher pavement to see if the stiffer suspension on the Mazda gets too jarring. Don't off road but go on dirt roads a lot. Also, the paved roads here in New Hampshire can get rougher than some of the dirt roads. So... hard to decide between these two vehicles. Nice review though.

THAT screen i the subaru ain't bad-- with the knobs etc.--- some of the latest ones have a HUGE assed. screen that takes up a huge space and look STUPID to me.. that one I might ould live with and ignore while driving. (except for the backup cam).. Personally I HATE all that " assisted" crap-- radar this and robot that-- BS-- I think that crap needs to go- but ALL makers are putting that mess in now- so no avoiding it-- without driving an OLDER vehicle. I don't like the sounds of that - road sounds or weak engine sounds.. like it's going to blow a head trying to get up to speed. The CX-30 you can take offroad too-- put a 2" factory lift on it- and offroad tires and it will go where the subaru WON"T. I've seen Sarah -n-tune test both and she LOVED the CX-30 and her test (where in she does NOT baby the cars- she pushes them)... the CX-30 looks , sounds and comes out MUCH MUCH BETTER.

You didn't mention the difference on slippery roads. In Minnesota, where I live, we can have slippery roads 6 months a year. How does the Mazda CX-30 handle snow and freezing rain? I know, from my wife's Subaru, that deep and slippery snow does not stop her Legacy sedan from going from A to B with ease.

Не уверен, что для Subaru ещё 2 USB-порта, большая сложность. Или например, обогрев заднего дивана, или поясничный подпор водителя и переднего пассажира. Вот без чего можно обойтись, так это сенсорный экран. Пусть экран будет, но пусть будут обычные кнопки. На ходу сенсор - это опасно и это не ремонтопригодно.

Blind-spot monitoring on the Crosstrek Sport is available only with a costly package, whereas the CX-30 Select comes well equipped. This makes the mid-trim Crosstrek Sport $2,500 more expensive than the CX-30 Select, when you check all the safety features. Adding insult to injury, all of Subaru's Blind-side monitoring systems only flash. They do not beep. So, if you decided to pay more for it, you are getting a subpar system.
