My conclusion is that its a nice bump in performance but I think my expectations have changed regarding laptop GPU performance per generation. Thank you so much for your hard work!! Seriously, this is great work and really appreciated. My GE66 3070 i7-10750H has shipped from Best Buy and they say delivery tomorrow. I don't regret returning the 2070Super model for the 3070, but what I am really questioning myself on is the increasingly lacklustre-seeming i7-10750H 6-core CPU. In terms of single-core, and so hopefully in most games, I hopefully won't see much of a difference from the i7-10870H in your review model *in fact the 6-core has a higher base frequency), but my real concern is the Ryzen processors I could get for the same or cheaper price from Asus. For cheaper than this I could get a Strix G17 or G15. For the same price as this, a SCAR G15 or G17. But the difference, and this is a BIG one for me, is the retailer. With Best Buy I have easy returns if I find a dead pixel, bad backlight bleed, or just change my mind. Not so, from what I can see, from retailers like B&H or the specialists like gentechpc. I was holding out some hope that Microcenter, which I have 1 nearby, would launch some 3000 series models today. Alas the only 2 which showed up on their site this morning were the MSI GP66 and GP76. I was hoping for maybe some Asuses :-( I don't know what to do.....sigh! First world problems indeed!!
@OWNORDISOWN3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Craig mate ! Yes, I think you made the right choice swapping it out. I would do the same. The screen transparency issue I have on my Dragonshield is gone and the speakers are better. Performance in games is better for sure. It runs cool and you won't need that max fan , perhaps on some serious CPU render or something. Undervolting is easy peasy and you are right, Best Buy has good service if something went wrong.
@V.Hazezz3 жыл бұрын
I almost bought the one you bought, but kept researching around and found the one with the 10870H and decided to buy that one. I have the Zephyrus G14, and I have seen that the CPU is mostly unused in the games I play, so I decided to go intel just to be able to have a way better graphics card. By the research I’ve done, I don’t think the CPU will bottleneck unless we are talking about really high framerates. I don’t like Asus because they solder one of their RAM sticks to the board, and that’s something I hate, so I skipped the Zephyrus line this year just because of that (and because I think they are using the Max-Q version, not the Max-P). Their cooling solution isn’t the best as well, so I may see an improvement with this new laptop. Well, I receive it tomorrow, so let’s see how it goes.
@shirokuro733 жыл бұрын
@@V.Hazezz Yeah after I ordered it I saw that the i7-10870H one was only $100 more! The thing is I ordered from Best Buy, so I can easily return or exchange if anything is wrong , or if I just change my mind. The online retailers where I've seen the i7-10870H model, either have blanket no, or restrictive return policies, which makes me extremely wary or buying something so expensive from them. I actually spent much of last week in this debate, my finger many times hovering over the "cancel order" button on Best Buy - but then they shipped it while I was dilly-dallying and so now it's too late. Delivery has now been pushed back twice so far though, from today, to tomorrow, and now Thursday. I'm waiting until I have it in my hands to make a final decision about keeping it, or returning it and going for the i7-10870H model, or an Asus. You're right about them soldering the memory, at least one module, on the Zephyruses (Zephyrii??) but on the Strix and Strix SCAR machines, to my knowledge they are not doing that, and both DIMM slots are available. The Strix and SCAR machines are using Max-P also I believe (or 100+ W variants or whatever we must call them now). I honestly think you are right, and the CPU, even the i7-10750H, will be just fine for gaming, it just irks me knowing I could get better CPUs (i7-10870H, Ryzens) for the same or less money. I guess with the GE66 I'm paying for the cooling and the build quality.

great video! I was hoping you could do a video on 3070 115watt vs 3080 150watt. I want to choose between alienware m17 r4 i7 3070 or 3080 or i9 3080. not sure if spending more is worth it or not. Would love your input.

i heard that gpu on gaming laptop nvidia 3000 series now based on wattage, meaning some laptop with rtx 3060 with big wattage could be better or even more performance than laptop with rtx 3070 with small wattage, is this true? how to check the wattage? because the seller usually doesnt mention it and most of sales person doesnt know about it

I'm on the fence on getting the MSI GP66. It's in my Newegg cart. I'm not a competitive gaming nut and probably will only buy games like GTA 5, Resident Evil 2 Remake, a bunch of older games from 2000s and mainly want to use it for my 3D programs. What do you think?

Really hoping that all these 30 series cards push value down the line. I got a GTX1650 laptop for £650 last year (Ryzen 4600h, 8gb ram) for catching up on loads of old games. In a few months my backlog will be more modern, if I can get a decent graphics card update for £700 I'd be very interested :)

I just got an alienware with the 3070 and I have noticed that this chassis has hot exhaust vents above my keyboard, rather than speakers. Im concerned about the screen getting some serious thermal stress/damage if I game with the lid closed. Any suggestions?

Great video! Do you think that playing some games on 1080p on a 2k panel will be that worse instead of a native 1080p?
@OWNORDISOWN3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You know, I gave that some thought as I was doing it and to me it looked fine. In the heat if battle I didn't notice. It is a subject for a future video 😀

@kasico3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen! I arrived quite late to this video 🤣. 80gb of footage? Omg, I definitely appreciate the effort that you put in this videos. Amazing! Maybe those Intel cpus aren't that good for this new gpu generation? And when you said at the end of the video about that 15% of performance improvements, that's a bit disappointing in the overall
@OWNORDISOWN3 жыл бұрын
Hey Andres! Yes, I was exhausted after this. 2 days isn't enough time really, I spent all weekend in my basement testing. I too was a bit disappointed with 15% gains. I just did a video on Dynamic Boost and Resizable bar and they don't help either at the moment.
@kasico3 жыл бұрын
@@OWNORDISOWN yeah I just saw your new video. And indeed, those new technologies at least in laptops looks like only smoke and nothing more. Even the charts of AMD looked better. But I appreciate your effort in those two days, great content!

You said that the performance is being held back by the I7 and hopefully the Ryzen series CPU's should fix that ? Surely then we'd have to see a vs between I7's and Ryzen? or a I9 varient with the 3070 vs Ryzen 5000 ?? (AW usually have the i9's etc?)
@OWNORDISOWN3 жыл бұрын
MSI will be releasing a Ryzen version later on so I'll definitely test that.

Have you tried undervolting this machine? I have the GE66/3070/i7-10750H and am unable to undervolt despite unlocking the overclocking menu in the MSI advanced BIOS (R-CTRL+R-Shift+L-Alt+F2 and then enabling overclocking and XTU interface). No matter what I do, editing the core voltage offset remains unavailable in XTU. I wonder if I'm doing something wrong, or if it's been purposely locked down on these new 3000 series machines, or in latest versions of XTU?
@OWNORDISOWN3 жыл бұрын
Hi Craig, Yes, mine undervolts OK and I have the latest BIOS. I did it within the advanced BIOS, I don't have XTU interface enabled. The offset is applied directly in the BIOS
@shirokuro733 жыл бұрын
@@OWNORDISOWN Thanks! I did see the options in the BIOS for the undervolting, but I'd been recommended to do it via XTU as that's apparently safer if it doesn't work. But it seems to be unsupported for whatever reason. I may try it form the BIOS. I'm looking into it because the temps while gaming on the i7-10750H are HOT. 95+ often on 5 cores, with one or more occasionally dinging 100C. It just seems like a lot to me.

Nice comparison. Can you please compare the 2021 Asus Strix Scar & the 2021 Asus Strix G17? Why is the Scar £100 more expensive than the G17, while both have same specs (300Hz, 5400H CPU, RTX 3070, 17" screen, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD)

Trying to determine if it's better to get an area-51m w/2070 vs the New R4 with 3080? The area-51 has a Desktop CPU so it seems to mean it might be a better buy but I also see the desktop 2080 compared to a 3070? So really what would you buy just in personal opinnion? the area-51 is a bit heavy but I want future gaming on Battelfield 6 to work. As the expense will not allow me to buy a new pc next year.
