Great video! I have the same truck and agree the oil filter location is a pain. I started fitting a large ziplock bag over it (once it's a bit loose), then remove it with the bag in place. After it comes off, hold it in place another 30 seconds for additional drainage. This works like a champ for me. I've always done my own changes, especially since I average about 45k miles per year and change every 5k so I save a ton of money.

Toyota has a drain plug housing for the oil change Works well , just connected one of those small clear hoses to the plug all the way down to the used oil conditioner, there’s gotta be a third-party design housing with a filter for easy drainage!

This is also a simple job if you are laying down with your feet sticking out the front of the truck, position yourself so you can reach your right hand straight up to filter. Now if you angle your body so your feet are pointing in the direction of the passenger front wheel you can reach your left hand up and grab the filter with that hand coming from the front side of the engine. Bam, both hands are now on the filter and its an easy turn.

Love the comments about "collage educated" engineers but let me tell you what most likely happened. The oil filter, drain plug, sway bar, etc etc all came together at different times on different vehicles. Even if the "engineer" knew how to change oil (many don't) and went their boss to say "hey boss, we need to move the filter"...their boss would say "can't do that cost money and time" You see, bean counters run most manufacturing companies now. The people in charge NEVER changed their oil, repaired anything, and don't understand the frustration of those who do. Next time you fill out one of those stupid marketing/satisfaction surveys be sure to mention: "how about trading proper oil filter/maintenance access for 1 less USB port or confusing touchscreen controls" Most likely you'll be met with a blank stare.

Poke the bottom of the filter with an icepick or a nail set. Pull it out, and quick swap in a long funnel to direct the flow into the drain pan. I've been doing the ice pick thing for years to keep it from waterfalling the outside of the filter on my F250s where you have clear access all day, but this is the first change on my Longhorn. Looks like I'll need one of those bendy funnels I've wanted anyway.

I use to put the best in my Challenger 3.6, Mobil 1, Royal Purple, or Shell. Changed the oil every quarter, even if the car chime didn't go off. Flushed the engine every other year, and would also do a intake and fuel rail cleaning. It still developed a lifter tick (known as the Hemi tick) at 100k. Now with the Ram I just throw whatever cheap Dexos-compatible synthetic is on sale. Screw that noise, Chrysler has a major design flaw with its Pentastar and Hemi engines.

People over-rate the importance of brand name oil. When it comes right down to it, they all meet the exact ASTM standards. As long as you change the oil and filter regularly, you can use any brand of ASTM certified oil with confidence. Who do you think makes the Wal-Mart branded oil? Not Walmart.

Next time take tin foil and create a funnel to catch the oil or you can take a gallon zip lock bag and use it to take off the filter and catch all the excess in the bag…..just a few things I have done in the past to avoid some of the mess. As far as the Quaker state….it’s WAY BETTER than the crap coming from a drum that the dealer would be putting in it. @@5beesgarage it's literally at like a 45 degree upward angle, and you have to turn your wheel all the way to the left and reach through the wheel well. you also have to take off the skid plate every single time. it's horrible. i'm surprised no one has created like a 3d printed thing to put around the ram's filter so the oil can flow into a catch can or something. i just bought a 21 RAM a few months ago and am about to change the oil...

Not going to hear a thing from me on your choice of filter and oil. The Fram XG/Ultra filters are very well made. Anyone who confuses them with the less expensive orange Frams doesn't know anything about filters. As for Quaker State, it is owned by Shell and is super high quality. Compare its specs to anything from Mobil, Castrol, etc. But keep it quiet or QS will start charging more for it when the word gets out. As for the filter location, I'm glad I drive a 2019 Chevy with the 5.3. Easiest oil change of all the full size trucks in my opinion. No suspension parts in the way. Oil filter right next to the drain plug with nothing in the way. GM made the oil changes super easy.

If you are going to make self help vids, then you should list data - such as drain plug size, torque spec, filter model number, oil type, etc. Too many people making vids that can't think of common sense items.

Thank you for the comment. Is it the creator doesn't have common sense or is it the consumer that is lacking? I make videos of what i am doing, not necessarily a how to. I am a creator not a teacher.

For 1. Quit using Fram oil filters. They are the worst oil filters you can ever use. 2. Buy yourself an oil filter relocation kit it’s worth every penny..
