For the latest Subaru Crosstrek pricing and information:
www.kbb.com/subaru/crosstrek/
Aligning with modern fashion, Subaru calls the Crosstrek a small SUV…even though it’s clearly a hatchback. Whatever you call it, the Crosstrek does indeed compete with small SUVs like the Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, and Jeep Renegade.
Compared to that squad the Crosstrek has some key advantages.
#1: Standard all-wheel drive. Other than the Kia Seltos, I can’t think of any small SUVs where all-wheel traction is a given. #2: Ground clearance. With 8.7 inches between earth and underbelly, the Crosstrek can tackle more challenging trails without shedding componentry along the way. For perspective, you’d have to upgrade your Renegade to top-tier Trailhawk trim to match the Crosstrek’s ground clearance. And #3: Price. The cheapest Crosstrek starts a touch above $22,000, not including destination charges.
Base and Premium trim Crosstrek’s employ a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine (152hp, 145 lb-ft) delivering adequate thrust and competitive fuel economy. You can even choose a manual transmission, which partly explains the Crosstrek’s low base price. Budget an extra $1,350 if you’d rather have Subaru’s Lineartronic continuously variable transmission manage ratios for you.
With the Sport and Limited trims, a heartier 2.5-liter engine (182hp, 176 lb-ft) teamed with that continuously variable transmission comes standard.
Cargo space is a competitive 20.8 cu-ft behind the rear seats. Folding those seats reveals a total of 55.3 cu-ft. There are also standard roof rails for securing larger gear to the roof.
If you want to overland your Crosstrek, I sure won’t judge. Explore the Crosstrek’s cabin and you’ll find respectable occupant space in front or in back…assuming you’re a completely average dude like me.

Beyond space, the Crosstrek’s cabin offers a clear view out, simple knobs and switches, materials that metaphorically shine among the small SUV set, and colorful stitching on higher trims. There’s a lot to like in here.
Distracting from the indignity of me blowing that thing up, is our test car’s Plasma yellow pearl paint. Hat tip to Subaru for not charging extra for their more distinct paint choices.
On an aesthetic note, I find the shape of the plastic wheel arches…odd.
Applied to your nearest roadway, the Subaru Crosstrek manages bumps with competence though interior noise is more pronounced than in Subaru’s more expensive offerings. Which is no surprise given the Crosstrek’s price tag. The steering also falls in the “just fine” category.
For those with off-road aspirations all Crosstreks, save the base trim, include X-mode which alters CVT, engine, and stability control settings for dirt road adventuring. Choose the Sport trim, like our tester here, and you’ll get dual-function X-mode with literally twice as many modes. Wow.
Keep things basic and the most elemental of Crosstreks includes a 6.5-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, automatic climate control, these SI-Drive buttons which alter accelerator responsiveness, and a rear-seat reminder so you don’t forget your kids, pets, or ice cream.
Higher trims offer features like heated seats, smart key access, and a larger 8-inch infotainment display. And if you feel like burning down an extra $1,000 there’s a moonroof.
Eyesight, Subaru’s camera-based driver-assist suite, comes on every Crosstrek..with the continuously variable transmission. Sorry manual transmission fans, you’ll have to employ old-fashioned spatial awareness if you’d like to avoid catastrophe.
Merging lane departure warning, steering assist, dynamic cruise control, and forward collision alert, Eyesight can help protective awful drivers from their own obliviousness.
I should also note that Subaru makes a Crosstrek hybrid. When I tell you, it costs more than $35,000 plus destination charges you might recoil in shock. Mitigating that shock. it’s actually a well-equipped plug-in hybrid that can drive 17 miles on electric power alone, is eligible for a roughly $4,000 US federal tax incentive, and, in certain states, earns you access to the HOV lane.
The subcompact SUV field has grown in recent years, so you have plenty of choices (visual of Mazda CX-30, Honda HR-V, Jeep Renegade, Hyundai Kona) though let me throw out a wild card. If you like the Crosstrek but want to save some cash, you could buy the Subaru Impreza 5-door instead. It’s essentially a Crosstrek with the body cladding removed, reduced ground clearance, and a $3,000 lower starting price. Something else to ponder.
Nonetheless, assuming you view it as such, the Subaru Crosstrek stacks up well against the current gaggle of subcompact SUVs.

We just bought this exact trim a couple of weeks ago and couldn't be happier! We went for the Cool Grey Khaki which is that beautiful mix of blue/grey. I love how the badging, grille, wheels, shark fin antenna, and mirror caps are all painted metallic dark grey instead of cheap black plastic or gaudy chrome. The gold stitching and Crosstrek embroidery on the seats are a very sporty touch. The grey/black water repellent seats are very comfortable and high-end looking and the fact that they're heated makes for a great value. Lastly, I like the fact that Subaru still equips some of their vehicles with CD players. That's my preferred music source! I grew up with CD players and hate to see them go away. Subaru is one of the last automakers to still offer CD players other than Mazda.

@@ronavena The CX-30 never had it since it came out for 2019. It's their latest model so of course they didn't equip it with an old technology. However, I believe the CX-5 still has it considering it hasn't been fully redesigned since 2017. The Mazda 6 still has it since it hasn't been fully redesigned since 2014. They did give it a facelift for 2018 inside and out but still kept the CD player.

I test drove a Subaru Crosstrek and a Kia Seltos along with a Jeep Renegade yesterday and I have to say that the Kia and the Subaru were in my opinion 2 of the best vehicle's so far. The Subaru Crosstrek has a great engine/transmission combination that made it feel very good visibility is pretty good ( the Seltos was a bit better 😅😅). The handling is very good. The ride is one on point and the mpg is nothing to complain about. However for all of it's pros there are a couple of cons. One of cons I have to complain about is the ignition. For $34,000 I would expect a keyless option like a push button starter or keyless entry. The Kia Seltos has a keyless option. So Subaru what's the deal?? Other than that a very good vehicle. And a good vehicle for the money$$$. a good buy.

Great car, but the competition is catching up, especially in the powertrain department. They should make the 2.5L standard, and perhaps add a turbo model for the higher trim levels. Subaru should also make some sort of limited slip rear locker available for the "Wilderness" models. I bought an Impreza, and am happy with it. As to price, one should really move up to the Premium trim level at least. I bought the base model, but after adding automatic and a couple of options, was close to Premium levels, which is a much nicer car (CD player, heated mirrors/seats, better ride quality).
@CorkKNIFE
@CorkKNIFE 2 жыл бұрын
The competition is sub-compact, the Crosstrek is based on the compact Impreza so for example, the Crosstrek has almost 5 inches more of rear leg room than the Toyota Corolla Cross. with which it's often compared and Jeep level road clearance where the Mazda CX-30 can't touch (not to mention Mazda's rough ride often described as bone jarring). It's almost as if it's on a different class.
@edsmith9855
@edsmith9855 2 жыл бұрын
@@CorkKNIFE True for some, like the Kona and HRV, but the CX-30 is based on the Mazda 3 (not really a sub-compact) and the Corolla Cross (obviously) is based on the compact Corolla.

I own the Impreza hatchback. I wanted the crosstrek, but the vehicles are pretty much identical and I’m not shelling out $5k more for ground clearance that no one ever uses.

2:12 lmao um, no. I'm not a car person so I can only speak from my limited experience on earth but my test drive of this car, which I like enough so far, thought this was one of the most sluggish cars I've test driven in two months. (Volvo S60 T8 Hybrid was the most insane, so far.) I may try a Rav4, which I hear is sluggish as well.

Lol, it's a compact CUV. Want a little speed get a Hyundai Kona N, or the Mazda Turbo (this one you'll regret in a few years). Otherwise a Porsce Macan is your next vehicle.

If only Subaru offered dual climate zone on the Crosstrek then this would be a winner in my book.
@danielfair4675

It's a small vehicle, no need for dual climate control. It's not like you're running air and the passenger 2 ft to your left needs the heat on.

@@danielfair4675 I had a Corolla with dual climate zone and let me tell you; dual climate is a relationship/marriage savor. You don’t know the luxury of that until you have it. Or been on very long car rides where your gf likes it seventh layer of hell hott and you are dying of heat stroke 😂 plus the Canadian version of the Crosstrek has dual climate zone.

@@EONEILL1987 the wifey drives a loaded Chrysler 300c awd w/the Hemi. Dual climate, heated & cooled cup holders, heated & cooled seats, heated steering wheel, rear window powered sunshade, and numerous other goodies. I've seen it & used it all .... the Crosstrek Limited has everything I need, to keep me perfectly content.

@@danielfair4675it's true it may not need dual zone climate control (just purchased a 2021limited model) but my only gripe is it lacks rear vents and heated rear seats like my limited legacy

They've been on vehicles since the early 2000's, the Chevy Suburban had them back then. Welcome to the world of protecting your wheel arches from rusting out in 5 - 7 years. Dodge can back that statement with their trucks. 😄

I looove that they included the sport trim this year with the 2.5L engine, But seeing that yellow-green Sport decals/stitching, plastics, etc is God-awful hideous in person (not a fan of the yellow green paint body color either) REALLY wished they went with the orange that was in the forester sport AT LEAST.

The problem with most Subarus, their head gaskets blow. And if you decide to buy one, always go with a manual transmission because that 2.5l engine is too much for a cvt transmission which they tend to go out and get very pricey in repairing.

The head gasket problem has pretty well been corrected. Highest reliability ratings from _Consumer Reports_ last time I looked. The CVT transmission? A newly whelped puppy has too much torque for that.
