Good review. Had a ‘09 Limited and just got a ‘20 Limited. Extremely happy. IMO best ratio $/features in segment. Do agree with others, in wanting engine options like turbo or more HP. But for vast majority of use, this engine will be perfectly fine. Refinement/features in ‘20 compared to my ‘09, makes me feel very dated/old.

@carlauditts85144 жыл бұрын
@j james you totally right there. But turbo is coming on forester trim model ( next year). I drive a lot so turbo was killing me on gas. When they add a 360 camera I will also ready to trade again. There is a trim forester model with a 360 camera in Asia. So definitely they will add that feature. Santa Fe Hyundai has it for 2021 and Nissan Rogue 2021. Santa Fe Hyundai looks very nice but I never own Hyundai or Kia so it will be hard to give them a try. So far Subaru have been reliable. I had a 2016 forester which traded in for the 2018 forester XT and now the 2021. My wife has a 2020 Subaru ascent and we love it. The tech on the outback / legacy is nice. Even when the legacy exterior is boring I’ll would love to have a legacy sedan too. I do Amazon flex and I need the comfort and AWD cause I live in Wisconsin (heavy snow).

@Sirgromulus4 жыл бұрын
@@Hallowsaw Really a matter of your specific requirements. I compared the Outback and Forester a couple of years back and it was an easy decision to go with the Forester for our particular needs: 1) The extra cargo headroom works for our needs. For example, I had to move a pressure washer a couple of weeks back. It (barely) fit in the Forester.... the Outback would have been too short. My wife and I also occasionally sleep in our Forester during shorter camping trips and while the longer floor length of the Outback would be nice, we appreciate the higher interior height which actually allows us to sit-up in the back (for drinking coffee, reading, etc.). 2) Subaru adopted the inferior integral roof-rack-crossbar configuration a few years back and lost a lot of customers. For years the Outback was the "go-to" vehicle for sea kayakers due to the low height and relatively long roof length. The integral roof-rack/crossbar system is inherently weaker and doesn't allow for the wider cross-bar spacing distances that those of us with long sea kayaks (16 - 18') need. The Forester actually has one of the longest cross-bar spacing distances of ANY vehicle with a maximum of 48". This is even longer than my 4th generation 4Runner. We also carry and use a rooftop mounted tent on our Forester and it works great with aftermarket Aero cross-bars on the sturdier roof-racks on the Forester. Many people with Outbacks end up mounting aftermarket adapters to their Outback due to the inferior factory system. If you don't carry anything on your roof rack than obviously this is not an important feature. 3) While they both have 8.7" of ground clearance, the Forester has better approach, break-over, and departure angles. This is a benefit for those of us who actually go off-road at times. 4) The (new) Outback models with the large Infotainment system have the X-mode, auto stop-start, and some HVAC controls built into the system. This is very inconvenient compered to sperate physical buttons. This is especially important for the auto stop-start system since I disable this "feature" every time I drive the car.

@@Hallowsaw We know the (unmentionable transaxle) is going to go. But aside of that, I I think Subaru makes a good product. I love your reviews!! My only caveat to owning a Subaru is (aside from an incessantly droning CVT) I wish they would put about $200 worth of sound deadening, make it an option or package. I know I'm not alone there are many Subaru owners who are fanatical about their vehicle and nearly all of them wish they were just 5-8 dB quieter... 58 is shameful, strive for 49-51 for the best road experience. My 2012 Impreza had the most god-awful road noise until I upgraded tires... I can only imagine what $200-$300 worth of sound deadening material would have done.

I would like to hear from folks who have had the older transmission models compared to the new CVT. In my case, we owned a 2005 Outback XT and a 2011 Forester XT. They both had a lot of off road use including a lot of deep sand beach driving and mud hole Gameland roads. Then I bought a third generation Outback with a CVT and while it is great on the highway and beach, I have seen things off road that just makes me shake my head. For example, My older models would climb right over an embankment or claw it's way out of a deep mud hole. My 2016 will just shut down. The computer shuts down the engine to protect the CVT. Does not matter if traction control or eyesight are disabled. Once it shuts down, you better have another vehicle with you or a tow truck. Same thing that the TFL reviewers found. Unacceptable for me and I'm going back to a real transmission and different brand.

However, Subie gives you their fantastic AWD standard (important if you are back in the mountains like I am), great fuel economy, enough power (though it could use more), a CVT I can at least live with, but one thing almost never mentioned in reviews is just how safe Subarus are with their crash protection design. Really awesome levels of protection in terms of how they design their cars, and you'd have to go up to a BMW, Mercedes, Audi or Volvo to find crash protection that is on par with, or better than, the Subarus. I like the look of then Crosstrek much more, but I like the extra room and visibility I would have in the Forester--the Crosstrek just feels cramped to me.

I like better the forester rather than the rav4 because the rav4 adventure costs $36k and it doesn’t have a really nice looking interior. The panoramic sunroof is not standard, it’s optional so you gotta pay more. Also the rav4 infotainment system is laggy and old and exterior not well looking. Also with the rav4 lineup, awd is optional so you gotta pay more and fwd is standard in the rav4 lineup. But the forester sport is a better option over the rav4 because it’s $29k which is cheaper than the rav4 the forester sport internet comes standard which orange ascents and cloth seats. Also the forester infotainment system is modern and it’s less laggy than rav4 infotainment system. Also the panoramic sunroof is standard in the forester sport and in any forester trim level. And the forester is a bit more fuel efficient than the rav4 because of forester cvt transmission. Also the forester has 8.7 inches of ground clearance which the rav4 adventure has 8.6 inches of ground clearance which means that the forester has one more inch of ground clearance than the rav4. Also awd comes standard in every Subaru vehicle and it’s cheap which awd in Toyota is optional and you gotta pay more for awd and fwd is standard in Toyota suvs except trucks. With $29k you can get the rav4 limited standard fwd, but you can also get the forester sport for $29k. So I’ll definitely I’ll buy and drive home the forester sport. Also use my forester for camping and long road trips and adventure and upgrade it into a serious off road worthy like off road trucks. Excellent job Subaru 👍🏼

Simple question - has Subaru definitively fixed the "legendary Boxer engine" head gasket issue? If so, what year did they fix it? This seems to be a difficult issue to find closure on. I ask because I had my mother's 2000 Outback - literally drive by a little old lady - with 60k miles - blow a head gasket. Yes I know the 2000 era was bad for the head gasket issue. What I can't easily find is a year when Subaru fixed that problem. My mother has a 2009 Forester and I believe they still have the problem.
@abe6773 жыл бұрын
"Over the years the EJ25 engine’s design was revised and gradually phased out. So what year did Subaru fix this problem? While there is no definitive “safe” year, head gasket leaks tend to be much less common on newer models. If your Subaru is a 2012 or newer, odds are really good that you won’t have any issues."

6-speed Manual for us manual people. I won't buy one with CVT transmission. Love this model, needs a 6-speed. Manuals don't have the issues and are cheaper to work on and replace, then a CVT transmission. Love the black sport model.

Does it have remote start??

I currently own this car. 2009. At 171,000 miles, I’ve had to take the entire engine out and replace all the gaskets. You gotta send the engine to a machinist. Other than that, it’s a good car.

Newer ones the same way? I'm trying to decide between Toyota, Honda and Subaru. And engine removal does not help the subs.
@pfcaraujo3 жыл бұрын
@@raydickison1499 Toyota for longevity, i also have a 1998 Sienna running smooth at 250k miles. Subaru is amazing driving over snow and rough terrain, but the engines are a little more high maintenance. All depends on what your looking for

I have a 2020 forester sport. Tons and tins of rattles from the b pillars in both sides and the dash. Quite a bit of wind noise. Should have dual zone climate at least as an option. I chose the sport for the looks but wish i didnt have to lose the dual zone.
