With the exception of coho salmon, I find that all the other Pacific salmon species only have one goal when in the Tidal Fraser River, to swim upstream as quickly as possible until they reach their natal streams. Pink salmon indeed would more readily grab a lure than other species, but they are easy to catch mostly because of their high abundance as they swim through the Fraser. At 500k fish moving through in 24 hours, you bound to get some bites. I think this season has shown people that they are not as easy to catch when abundance is thinner and water clarity is lower. You actually have to work hard to get those hits.

Hi Vivian, Chilliwack River pink salmon population makes up one of the main components of the Fraser River pink salmon stock so you will see more and more pink salmon congregating throughout the entire Chilliwack/Vedder River throughout September. There is an episode coming out, probably next week, showing you how to catch them in rivers like where you were. Stay tuned.

@@FishingwithRod I'm fishing from Garry point. Do you think its a little late in the run to be fishing so close to the mouth for pinks? Or is it still good?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
The next five days or so are the peak of the run. How the fishing is at the mouth of the Fraser is usually the same as how it is in Mission because the entire Tidal Fraser is just a passage way which fish travel through in a day or two. One note, Garry Point Park is actually closed to salmon fishing right now because it is lumped into sub-area 29-9 which is closed to salmon fishing. This is an unintentional mistake and the zoning is going to be looked at this winter so it wouldn't happen again in two years from now. In the meantime, I know many have been fishing at Garry Point and even the officers checking are unsure about the regulations. I would avoid fishing it actually because the officers legally can fine people there for targeting salmon.

Is it quite a short season for Salmon fishing ? in Scottish rivers it varies from 1st Feb to 15th of November .We only have Atlantic Salmon and Sea Trout to fish for,and no fishing for them on a Sunday 😎
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, for this particular fishery in the Tidal Fraser River, it is short because that's how long the fish are present in the system. The Tidal Fraser River is basically a highway for these fish, travelling from the ocean to the tributaries. They do not stop until they hit the natal streams. Run timing of pink salmon in the Tidal Fraser River usually begins around mid August and ends around the end of September. Peak of the run is usually around now. 500k fish are estimated to pass through daily around the first or second week of September. It is quite an amazing nature event! The pink salmon fisheries are extended across the province of course. You can catch them off the beaches on Vancouver Island and some areas near Vancouver, similar to what you'd do with beach fishing for sea trout in Europe.

@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
Perry, it has been a tough season compared to others. This was probably our best afternoon out of several outings. The following day we could not get a single bite. Water clarity is a big factor, and it has been poor this past week. These fish use the Tidal Fraser River as a passage way, so they do not stop once they enter it. Your chance of catching them depends on how often they can see the lure. The more fish there are, the clearer the water, the slower they travel, the more likely you are to catch one. Any lure would work really. Adjust your speed, do more casts, time your outing with the incoming tide, these would increase your chance of getting bites.

I have Simms G3 Guide waders, you can see a video of those at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYO5YpasgblpnJo As for size, I can't really comment on that. You should pop into one of the stores and try them on until you find a pair that fits well on you. A lot of times the "right" sizes don't really translate to comfort until you put them on.

Thank you so much for your informative videos on fishing here in BC! I am new to fishing and your videos helped me to make my first attempt. Regarding fishing for pink salmon, I have some confusions with the notices. For tidal water, the water area definition is "downstream edge of the CPR Bridge at Mission to the mouth" but I am not sure where this "downstream edge" is. As for non-tidal water, the definition is "from the downstream side of the CPR Bridge at Mission". Once again I am not sure the definition of this "downstream side". Could you clarify on this, please? I plan to go to Matsqui Trail Regional Park for fishing and I think it is the place you fished in this video. Do I need a tidal licence or a non-tidal licence with salmon stamps in order to fish and retain my catch?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
The definitions of those boundaries are poorly written, so I'm not surprised that it is confusing to so many people. Basically, anywhere downstream from the CPR bridge in Abbotsford/Mission is the Tidal Fraser River. Anywhere upstream from that bridge is the Non-tidal Fraser River. If you are fishing in the tidal, like at Matsqui, then you need a tidal/saltwater fishing licence (and your salmon stamp if you want to keep fish). I would recommend that you fish the tidal, the fishing is much easier and the fish are fresher. Matsqui is a good place to start with, so is Glen Valley, Derby Reach. Locations are all explained on this page: www.fishingwithrod.com/articles/region_two/tidal_fraser_river.html Good luck!
@FishOnBai
@FishOnBai 2 жыл бұрын
@@FishingwithRod Thank for your explanation! The least thing I want is to go against fishing regulations. Another question I have is that if Matsqui is tidal water, would I not be allowed to fish there after Sep 18? Because I think Matsqui, Glen Valley, Derby Reach belong to subarea 29-13,-17,-16 and according to this website (www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/tidal-maree/a-s29-eng.html), the status of salmon fishing is closed.

Nice rod and reel, the Stradic's are by far my favorites. What I can't figure out is why are these high dollar rod builders still using conventional twist up reel seats? I find them both uncomfortable and they easily back off when casting. Where as a lot of lower priced and even budget rods have superior reel seats with a more secure locking design. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hey Jason, I agree. I do prefer a higher end reel seat than the twist up option as it does come loose from time to time. I can only provide these feedbacks back to Shimano, but not sure if it actually influence the decisions on their designs. :)

The Tidal Fraser River pink salmon fishery is now closed for 2021. The next opening will be in September 2023. The spots can be found at: www.fishingwithrod.com/articles/region_two/tidal_fraser_river.html

Hey Rod, I was fishing at the end of 6rd on Sunday (no action, only saw 1 fish jump out the water in a span of 4 hours) and 5rd on Monday (fish were actively jumping through the 5 hours I fished but they were much further out away from the banks), 3 hours before high tide at 7pm but was not able to catch any pinks. Went to Brownsville bar on Tuesday again 3 hours before high tide to try my luck but to no avail, only one angler managed to hook onto a pink but lost it just before netting. I guess my question is, I have no clue what to feel for in terms of what a "bite" is, would be great if you can help me understand this a little more. I'm fishing with spoons and spinners and I also just started fishing within the last few months without very much success obviously haha. Still have lots of patience and enjoying it eventhough I've been getting skunked quite often 😂. Anyway love your channel, thanks for all the great advice and tips 🙇‍♂️ hope to see you on the river one of these days! Tight lines!

I have always found when fishing for pinks you will really notice a bite. They are not to different to fishing for chums in the sense they just chomp down on the spoon and hook themselves although a good hook set helps. This is my first season fishing for pinks but I’ve somehow been lucky enough to limit on every outing.

That South Arm can be tough! Some days, the fish want nothing except just going upstream. I've had many days when I could see hundreds of thousands of them swimming up the river, and couldn't care less about your spoons or spinners. I also have seen that at some point, one fish starts to bite, followed by another, etc. I know we don't have many days in this opening, but one thing I'd suggest is to focus on one particular spot to develop a pattern over time. The Tidal Fraser River is a passage way for these fish, which don't stop at any given time once they are in it. With that many fish swimming by, at some point you'd intercept one if you are just casting and retrieving at the same spot. The morning tide in the upcoming days should be excellent. The next five or six days are typically the peak period of the entire run. Good luck and see you out there!

Ok I just realized that I didn't really answer your question lol! So the bites. I find that pink salmon bites tend to be lighter than coho bites. They have a tendency to "nibble" or "nudge" behind the lure as you retrieve it. I often feel the very slight tug and rather than setting the hook, I often wait or slow down my retrieve just slightly, while expecting a harder strike. That's when I'd set the hook. For spinners, the bites felt on the rod are a little different. Often the tension of the line would loosen, because the blade would stop rotating when the fish pulls the spinner. The loosening is then followed by a tug.

@FishingwithRod

You need a tidal/saltwater fishing licence to fish in the Tidal Fraser River, as well as the salmon conservation stamp for keeping pink salmon. All the Tidal Fraser River fishing spots I recommend are listed on this page: www.fishingwithrod.com/articles/region_two/tidal_fraser_river.html

In the canal there was hundreds going by every hour. Sadly you could literally put a marabou jig right in front of their face and they will just swim by like its not even there.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
With the low and clear water conditions, that's to be expected. Keep drifting your jig, tiny spoon, bait, etc over them, eventually you'd get one snapping at your presentation.

@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 жыл бұрын
I'm switching up spoons all the time, but basically anything in that 1/4oz range, pink, chartreuse, orange works well. Water clarity has been poor, so keep rotating those lures to see what works best. I personally think any lure would catch them, but you do need to switch up from time to time based on water clarity, maximizing the chance of them seeing it.
