I bought a 2021 Rav4 Limited last year and turning One year old this December. Yes, it’s loud on acceleration but I don’t mind it. What I do is turning the music volume up, which eventually lessen the engine noise. After all It’s a great car, reliable, and get me to the place where I want to be.

I own this car in AWD Hybrid form and it ISN’T quieter. However, I hardly ever have to push hard on the gas at all. If you drive the RAV4 the way Toyota intended the thing to be driven, you won’t be bothered by the engine noise at all. On the contrary, you can drive the car without noticing the engine is working and the system is so refined you will not notice the engine coming in if the system tells the engine to do so. I also tow a rather large trailer and even then it surprises me how smooth it drives. Sure, like I said, if I push it the car will tell you the engine is working. The car is not designed to do that and this is probably why Toyota didn’t adress this setback just yet. In short, probably the best car I have owned so far and keep in mind that nothing on this planet is perfect. Willem from Hekelingen, The Netherlands

Not only honest, but with BRAINS inside their heads, unlike a large majority of today's so called auto journalists, who are nothing but paid water boys for the manufacturers, parroting one another's talking points. That said, Toyotas are some of the best made vehicles, and no one can touch them on *_QUALITY, RELIABILITY, DEPENDABILITY AND DURABILITY_* by a country mile!! But their vehicles (specifically the ENGINES) have become *VERY UNREFINED, NOISY AND HARSH* in the latest models. Oddly, this criticism applies only to their *_SUVs and the 2.5 Liter 4 cylinder engine_* in general. The CAMRY XLE *V6,* The AVALON V6 (Limited model) and the ES 350 are extremely refined and quiet. The only thing i dont like about the stock exhaust is that it sounds kinda choked but a $1000 exhaust will not only open up your flow and make it sound GOOD and not choked but give you that kinda SUV power feel. Not to mention the extra 4hp which isnt much but the preparation for the next cycle will give good accel. I have to say, vehicles on the road respect my RAV4 allot and with the exhaust im installing soon, it'll be respected even more. I have less people trying to block me off in this car due to the intimidating sound and the great acceleration, with the aftermarket exhaust it'll be even better!

The problem with the RAV4, and most other Toyotas in general is how cheap the car and interior feels unless you get the top trim. The XLE trim for example, is literally a sea of hard, flimsy plastics, especially the doors. The new Sienna too, has panels that are barely held together from the factory. Toyota seriously needs to step it up on interior quality. Can't keep betting on reliability and resale value while turning a blind eye to almost everything else.

An additional thing to go with the RAV4 is that it has a dual fuel injection engine. That means you will have fewer issues with carbon build-up at the back of the intake valves. This is the same technology used in Highlander. I'm surprised that CX-5 (fun to drive) is not included in considering against RAV4 when it is a better SUV compared to Nissan, Honda and Ford. Lastly, CVT transmissions are okay for small cars but not for SUVs.

I have the 2021 Rav4 XLE and the engine noise is not an issue for me. Since I am not pushing the car when driving when the car is cruising or below 2000 rpm you will not hear any engine at all. To get the best mileage you have to start slow and when cruising just put light pressure on the gas pedal. On my last long trip I was getting 37 to 42 mpg at 60-65 mph. The only issue I have with this car is that when you try to close the doors the handle on the inside is position way to in and you need to pull the handle with a lot of force. The handle should have been placed somewhere in the middle. Well taken car of this car should last way over 200k miles without any major issues. The competition I do not think so. I have had toyotas and they have proven to be reliable cars especially when you have them since new.

We're picking up a '22 Rav4 limited in a couple weeks. I'm a Honda guy, but the CVT is a no sale for me. If they offered the 2.0t 10-spd like the Accord I would have chosen it. Looked at A-spec Acura, but about 10k more, plus dealers wanted 7k over msrp. Nope. One important distinction is the XLE and lesser trims only tow 1500 lbs. The TRD and Adventure and limited have torque vectoring AWD, and transmission cooler and engine oil cooler plus 100A alternator. This allows them to tow up to 3500 lbs. For us being in AZ. the additional coolers are a bonus even if not towing. While I have a dually for towing, being able to tow a small trailer is something I wanted. Actually wanted a TRD loaded up with the tech. pkgs, but none available in USA at moment. For what it's worth engine noise is a non- issue or me. Get the JBL setup baby!

Kia SX turbo was also on our list, nice unit but additional dealer markup of 5k sealed our choice. Also while Kia is really a nice option, resale is just not going to match Toyota or Honda resale. Honestly, I test drove the top of the range RAV4 Edge in Australia which is the 2.5l petrol motor with 8 speed gear box and off road features such as mud/dirt/snow etc and it sure was loud. What I didn’t like about it though is that it just felt sluggish and heavy like my dads brand new Prado GXL. I then test drove the Hybrid 2.5L AWD Cruiser and it felt like a different car. Quiet, responsive, smooth, powerful and refined. The hybrid was the obvious choice so that’s what I ordered. Skip the petrol and 8 speed gearbox people and get the Hybrid AWD. Reality is that 99% of people who actually want to do proper off road driving don’t get a RAV4 so the petrol only version is kinda pointless. Managing director at the Toyota dealership even told me that the only time he sells the petrol only RAV4’s is to people that haven’t got their head around Hybrids and so haven’t bothered to test drive one before. He also said that the way things are going, in the future the majority of their cars would be Hybrids anyway. Yes he could’ve made more money from me if I bought the Edge but he was more concerned about what was more enjoyable and efficient to drive so it was nice to see a salespersons honesty.

I thought they added an under the hood mat to combat the engine noise. Sadly it didn’t help. I believe the noise is due to gasoline direct injection and having port and direct fuel injection to prevent carbon build up with gasoline direct injection. You’re right when you compare it feature to feature, Toyota’s reputation and the exterior styling it’s the best choice. I’m not a fan of hybrids as I worry about having a CVT transmission and the resale due to the high voltage battery. Thanks!,
@christopherleonge18333 жыл бұрын
You are exactly correct. That's just the normal mechanics of the port and direct injection.

I think they'll probably get around to putting in some more sound deadening material when the mid-cycle refresh comes around, they're probably holding it off until then - though if its a raspy engine, you can only put so much sound deadening. But yes, totally agree with all the other things you mentioned too about what they can update. If you want to keep the vehicle for 10-15 years, stay away from the hybrid! I know way too many folks who've had issues with their Toyota hybrids as they get older. Hybrid technology in vehicles is far from being as reliable as it ages compared to a conventional NA engine.

In terms of the Rav4... They need better seat material, and I think Android Auto should be standard globally... not cherry picked for regions of the world. The engine noise only kicks in when people piss me off and I rev it to overtake them ( Not American ).... People bank with Toyota now both for style and for known reliability.. and if it has to be sold, its not a complete wipe-out financially like a German vehicle.

A review will naturally be very subjective based on who is testing it, but when you say loud engine noise, why not actually measure it and compare it to its competitors? id love to see how much dB it makes while accellerating vs other similar cars. Is it really "that noisy" or are your ears just adjusted and used to more quieter cars? Can't go back in time to fix it obviously, but a thought for future tests perhaps.

Test drove the hybrid AWD version with the CVT auto of this in the UK and I really don’t get this engine noise thing under acceleration. Not sure if we have a different model or improved sound proofing, but if you put your foot to the floor then it will be noisier. Try coming off the gas pedal ever so slightly and it switches up and no more noise than you get in any other car (unless you are looking at a Rolls or a Bentley) under heavy acceleration.

I have the non hybrid and the sound is not bad either. I would not change an 8 speed transmission for a Hybrid CVT. Also in the end your battery will eventually will need to be replaced and all gas your saving will end up replacing the batteries since these are expensive. Easelly $4k and over.

I will always recommend the RAV4 .... all day long. However, they’ve become far too common and generic looking... for me. Everyone one of them is silver, black and white (some red). They seem to have abandoned their original formula.... new and interesting styling, exciting colours (like Gold!), and with a reliably (and engaging) Manual transmissions! Vehicles like that are becoming rarer and rarer, by the day! Would I recommend the RAV4? Absolutely ... Yes. All day long. But personally... I’d save that same amount of coin for a true classic. Top notch review. I currently have the 2009 Rav4 V6 (3rd row) and absolutely no issues with it at 265k km. So many family memories with this vehicle. However, after 12 years, I just want to upgrade because of the technology advancement and of course the cabin noise. The XLE AWD is in top of my list. However, after watching this review, I'm a bit concerned about the noise issue.

I find these reviews about the cabin noise not accurate. Of course when you rev up an engine you’re going to have loudness. My husbands GMC Sierra is loud when he guns it.

Btw.. for all the positives things you mentioned, you said the main reason for not recommending this is the noise... really? Who drives in silence anyway? And I’m almost certain your driving this car without having to accelerate hard every minute.
