4:41 I wonder if you're feeling more the Transition suspension or the FOX fork pumping under uphill pedaling? I think sometimes a frame gets blamed for the fork absorbing energy.
@JNOTECH3 жыл бұрын
Transition bikes are some of the best bikes I've ridden. Their SBG/Giddyup geometry really does work. It's very slack up front with tons of trail with the reduced offset fork. Some bikes get squirrely when going fast esp when going down really gnarly sections where it wants to yank your bars off your riding line. Transition bikes want to keep going straight and have a heavier steering feel and it will make you feel a lot safer going down those techy, gnarly sections or simply riding at a higher speed. If this bike had a longer chainstay, it would not work as the geo at the front already combats excessive steering, however the very short chainstays really work with the front to restore the nimbleness this bike needs. However for anyone not used to this bike may notice it feels awkward at very slow speeds, like low speed really twisty sections require more labor to get by compared to other bikes with a lighter, looser steering feel. This is the bike to get if you want more stability on the straights and coming out of corners with more confidence. It rewards the kind of rider that provides more input (shifts body weight a tiny bit more) than with other bikes.
@mtbyumyum3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for weighing in! Yeah, I didn't love this feeling on the Spur.... I get it, and it's cool but for me, a short travel bike needs to be more agile. Also, the sentinel as I recall has long chainstays, not short.... switchbalde, ripmo and sb130 all have shorter chainstays. I appreciated the SBG geo on the Sentinel a lot more than the Spur. Crazy how much traction you have in the corners on this bike!
@JNOTECH3 жыл бұрын
@@mtbyumyum Actually you're right. The Scout and Patrol have 430mm and the Sentinel is 440mm IIRC. I've only tested the Scout and Patrol myself. The stability and traction coming out of corners, at least in my opinion, is one of the best. It's not the most nimble in the ultra twisty sections and will need more work from the rider to move around the bike much more than other bikes to get by. The analogy I use to describe it goes back to my experience driving a Lambo Countach. If you're driving around a parking lot at those speeds going in and reversing out of stalls, the heavy steering is almost too much to bear. But as soon as you put that car on the highway and get the speed up, you'll understand why the steering feel is like that. The faster you go, the more stable and in control you feel at the wheel. However bombing down really rocky, heavy rooted areas where your bike wants to fall apart or on the verge of hanging up and going OTB, the Transition bikes will feel almost as safe as a DH bike. Your assessment regarding how this will help a novice rider feel more confident is an opinion I also share.
@mtbyumyum3 жыл бұрын
Nice. Yep! I think this would be an excellent bike for someone looking to get into more difficult terrain at high speed who doesn't have much experience outside of trail riding.

Totally agree with you in the traction on the corners, and me as well as your buddy i saw, have lowered the stem down to the frame. I believe that comments for more weight on the front while riding because of the washouts on the turns,was made having the stem all the way to the top of the steerer. As for climbing i believe it pedals better than the sb-130 that i had ,on more relaxed climbs because of the geometry but not faster if you push (yeti's infinity platform outperforms everything else on that). Its a review that i really liked because you saw everything i saw and makes me feel good about my decision and buy a Senti. Thank you !

Yes i have been looking at the new Trail 429 as its supposedly much lighter than the previous version but not 100% sure yet. I got my BC for $3720.00 with no sales tax and list was $6100.00 and even after all mods i had under 6 invested, rode 1.5 years and sold for $4750.00 in 2 days. BC was $3600.00 + 120.00 to ship, upgraded to carbon bars, wheels, RSC brakes and XO 10-52, bike was 29.7 with Stamp 11 pedals, fender and bottle cage so it was hooked up, i had Mavic carbon wheels which were only category 3 but never an issue for my riding style and new owner knew. I sold old stock wheels never used for $200.00 and got the Mavic on pinkbike for $850.00 which was a steal and they had the newest 40 tooth hub.

Similar to the Megatower?
@mtbyumyum3 жыл бұрын
No. A bit smaller feeling but close.... does better at slower speeds
@DominicTschupp3 жыл бұрын
I tested both and found that the Megatower is more nimble and has more pop than the Sentinel. Went for the Sentinel and love it! Super stable and confidence inspiring. It takes more effort to bunny hop, manual etc. but I got used to preloading a bit more than on a „smaller“ bike. Great value for money, too!

I don't get the hip pack thing. The pressure across your lower abdomen is uncomfortable to me. Frame water is always preferable but when needing lots of water a backpack is so much better. You can also just put an extra bottle in your bib pockets which is much less noticeable than a hip pack. But each to their own!
@mtbyumyum3 жыл бұрын
Dude, I completely agree w you.... on every other hip pack I've ever used. They're terrible! This on the other hand, you seriously dont even notice it's on you. It's so light weight and minimalist.... easy and don't even notice it!

While waiting for my Switchblade to show up I took my wife's transition scout out for a couple of rips and couldn't believe how nice the suspension felt...still playing with suspension but trying to get the switchblade dialed...curious why you sold your switchblade?
@mtbyumyum3 жыл бұрын
I just don't keep bikes that long.... gives me more opportunity to ride more bikes and create content. I will say, at times the Switchblade could feel a bit harsh for me in certain situations.

First sign is oil splurging out of the shock, no rebound control... just pogo stiking and often times, a knocking noise. These are the few signs I've noticed when my shock goes bad

What’s up man. My daughter wants to know why a grown man is called mtb yum yum . 😂. I think you addressed this before but I don’t remember why. I blamed it on your kids. 😂

haha, funny! It came from back in my road biking days when we'd go on these incredible long hard rides... 100+ miles and more than 10k vert.... the pain and difficulty was "yumyum" like amazingly difficult but very worth while pain and suffering on the bike.
@xxNickVxx3 жыл бұрын
Hey Yumyum, appreciate the vids and you def influenced my decision to get a Ripley V4. Thank you! Curious what your buddy's reviews/input are of the bikes you demo. He is def more sendy and seems to throw/lean the bike a lot more than you do, which is the style I strive for.
@mtbyumyum3 жыл бұрын
Yeah! Tyler is an excellent rider... one of the better riders in our area here in SLC, Utah. He'll be putting the Sentinel up for sale in the next week or so. Looking to move to a more playful trail bike... Ibis Ripmo or Pivot Switchblade. He's had a lot of time on but those bikes and I think that's the direction he's going.

Look at you reviewing bikes again! I assumed you had given it up.

haha never giving up.... I've put way WAY too much time into this channel. I just get really busy in the summer with the kids of school and everything.... KZbin sort of get put on the back burner... @@mtbyumyum thats how it should be done, plenty of people put too much energy in their channel and lose focus on the important things in life. They also loose interest in the actual hobby they are filming. Looking at all the reactions on your channel you do allright, we rather wait for good reviews

haha yeah, too bad the google algorithm doesn't value my higher priorities.... family, church, day job lol hahaha It's crazy.... I didn't upload for like 2 months and I can just see KZbin/Google isn't pushing this video at all. Sort of frustrating. With I had more time to do a video a week and stay in "sweetspot" for the algorithm.... thanks for the kind words and support!!

@@mtbyumyum just to be clear I wasn’t being critical in the slightest. If anything I was thinking you got tired of people constantly asking for the next review right in the comments of the review you just posted. Decided you’d rather just ride bikes with you friends.

As always, great review! I hope you get a chance to test the new Evil Insurgent V3 MX. It will be great to get your opinion on that bike specially since its a mullet bike that could be a good fit for you.

Surprisingly it wasn't that bad or noticeable. The Sentinel is just a click above the Ripmo, Switchblade and Hightower in my experience and still very ridable!

Pick two or four trails to keep it consistent, two mellow and two high speed chunk to be able to get a good idea of the bikes Instead of saying this or that bike would prefer this type of trail

Thanks for doing this one, I am really interested in this bike. Another great job. Keep them coming please. Looking forward to the next one. I have a Spur and alike it so much I want the bigger brother also. Edit....I just ordered two Lab Austere packs. One for me and one for my wife.
@mtbyumyum3 жыл бұрын
If you like the Spur and you need more stability for higher speeds, you'll love the Sentinel. That would actual be a pretty rad combo! Enjoy the hip packs.... you'll love them....
