Coming from an audio nerd, great job on this video. There is a huge difference between the 2020 and 2021. The 2021 is significantly quieter in some key frequencies.

Finally somebody that understands audio and can do a proper comparison, instead of using a dB meter. That's a significant difference too. Nice work.

As an audio engineer, this is how you compare cabin noise: unweighted. A-weighting (dBA) is the worst for these applications,, since it subtracts important lower frequencies which are still critical to how a car sounds to humans. Thanks!

Yes, I heard a substantial difference. Of course I've listen to pink noise for countless hours having been a speaker designer.

I test drove a 21 LR that had the Double Pane. The difference versus my 20 SR+ single pane is insane. I thought I was being too generous mentally, but I guess the difference really did exist.

Sound pressure level meters actually weigh ny frequency. For example 1 kHz gets a higher weighting tank 20 kHz since we can hear 1 kHz sounds better. Not mentioned was how the microphone and recorder were used. If the recorder uses AGC (automatic gain control) this would modify the levels on the recordings. I would like more information included, like where in the car were the recording made and settings.

Need to repeat test with windows cracked open as a control. If both cars have identical sound levels, it will show that the difference is caused by the windows.

Good job, the only thing I am worried about is um being able to hear what's going on outside the car as you drive. Noises outside the car are a good indication of danger. Specially with music playing inside the car. So can we get the difference in sound outside. I think these numbers are important

Nicely done but would have been nice if the test could have been done with the same tires.

What bin size was used for the FFT? Tires (and wheel size) and the amount of wear on the tires make the biggest difference. When I replace old, worn tires with the same ones, the cabin gets dramatically quieter.

Great video and análisis, did you measure the tire tread to make sure they were about the same? My guess is that the 2021 have more insulation material underneath the vehicle, I believe Munro discovered some of that or maybe it was new underneath panels. Thanks!

From an audiophile, thank you for an approach to this that most can understand. Have you thought of applying the A-weighted response profile to model human hearing?
@EveryAmp3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I've considered it, but I'm also hesitant to tamper with the data. I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible so people who aren't familiar with this stuff can grasp it and hopefully other testers will follow suit and improve.

You should test an Audi eTron (Sportback). It has amazing soundproof for higher frequencies but it has massive issues with lower frequencies to the point of being unbearable.

So we can hear negative db? I thought zero db was no sound. Could you do a video about the safety factor of the double pain windows. Some say they’re better and some say they cause issues.
@EveryAmp3 жыл бұрын
You're thinking dB of sound pressure level (SPL). dB is a logarithmic measurement in comparison to a reference level. In this case, it's an electrical output level of recorded audio. You'll see negative dB numbers on lots of audio equipment where 0dB is 100% output, anything less than that is a negative dB. By safety factor, you're saying their ability to withstand breakage vs you being able to break them to escape?

so what is the TLDR man? i failed high school math and have no clue! you said at end u hear a difference i guess that is the conclusion that 2021 is better? can u tell me by what % its more quieter? that is for basic dummy like me
@EveryAmp3 жыл бұрын
You could say it's 15% quieter, if that helps. Like I said, there's a real difference, but it's not something you're going to be blown away by. Were you able to hear the difference in the sound clips?
@Rhyme9053 жыл бұрын
@@EveryAmp thanks that is lot easier to digest. yes I was able to hear, sounded like a lower rumbling in the newer one. i suspect better seals and some more sound dampening stuff in the body etc. interestingly, some mat companies say their mats also help lower cabin noise from the bottom. might be interesting to see with and without if that's a bogus claim or reality. I imagine it could help a little its a thick barrier between the floor and the passenger.

Nice except the tires can make that much difference, so without the same tires you proved nothing. Swap the tires and repeat to see if there is a difference.
@EveryAmp3 жыл бұрын
Tires are incapable of making a difference over such a broad range of frequencies. I pointed out the frequencies that were changing with speed which is a likely indicator of tire/wheel effects.
@jadduncan3 жыл бұрын
@@EveryAmp I appreciate what you are trying to do here, but when tire noise is the single biggest factor and you don't control for it, it makes is very hard for me to believe the results as some of the difference is tires, but we don't know which tires are helping and which are hurting, what frequency and how much. Your results makes sense, but if you used the same tires on both vehicles, I would feel much more comfortable with the results.

I did something much more basic with weatherstripping on our 2018 Model 3: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3u5ZmaEZddloK8 and I agree, seeing the spectrum of noise is so important for this kind of thing.
