These days Thom looks fitter, happier and seems more productive. Comfortable and apprently not drinking too much anymore. Could be regular exercise at the gym 3 days a week maybe?

I think it’s getting on better with his associate employee contemporaries that’s made him at ease.

This explains why their last few albums always have high levels of production. Nigel is probably cycling thru some FX presets either he or Thom made at some point that automatically are set up with manual knob twiddling for Thom to flow and dance to. I would imagine they have a lot of FX chain presets at their disposal they use to jam like we see here, and record everything. I make like 1 or 2 FX preset chains a day, and after a while you eventually have a ton of lush and complex FX chains at your disposal and people ask you how did you get whatever sound, and it's really just you mucking around half understanding what you are doing and stumbling upon a good chain of FX and finding some nice knobs to move up and down that make audio better. Make a chain of FX a day on average, Then you can use it for years on any sounds you want. I have over 1000 at this point ready to go at any moment.

Do you know of any tutorial videos that go into this topic? How does one create a chain

It’s just Nigel’s AMX delay with the pitch shift in the feedback loop. He’s been using it since Okc. Thom has the vocal on an aux send being controlled by the fader to the AMS, and then back on a pair of channels that are being printed. It’s a way of making the delay throws sound more “live” than simple automation, but it’s actually how they used to do it in the old days before automation existed. Nigel is probably just fiddling with the pitch and feedback settings on the ams

@@RyanRenteria Yes exactly right. A technique that's been around for as long as there has been return tracks on a mixing console. Especially prominent in early dub reggae, which has influenced a lot of these kinds of manipulation techniques. It doesn't take away anything from Nigels or Thoms work here, it's just a tried and true method.

@@RyanRenteria even today in the magical days of midi. I like to program all automations, besides volume, using the knobs and faders on my midi controller. It turns the musical programming process much more instrumental, which I think is the point. I especially like to match three knobs to the mix, time, and feedback knobs on a tape echo and go to town on it.
