Sainz engine exploding probably saved Ferrari from having to make strategy decisions or team order calls late in the race. Carlos was faster than verstappen, and with Leclercs throttle issues verstappen closed the gap a lot by the end of the race, and safe to assume sainz would have been even closer to leclerc and we could've gotten another brilliant Ferrari strategy call

@@pranc236 No its not. Leclerc was on much fresher hard tyres compared to Verstappen before the VSC. Verstappen was losing ground very quickly on those tyres. The VSC forced them both to be on the same age medium tyres, which played into Verstappen's favor. And its telling that Leclerc still has more bad luck than Verstappen this season, even if we assume that both of Max's 2 retirements were the same as Leclerc's 2, which in reality they are not since Leclerc retired from leading positions compared to Max's retirements both from 2nd place. And then we have the Ferrari 'stragedy' of Monaco and Silverstone which cost Leclerc wins in both. And the there was the engine change penalty, starting from the back in Canada. People say 'Max is better', which at the moment I cannot agree with. Since Australia up until Austria, Max had the more reliable, equally quick, higher top speed car that has also been kinder to its tyres on raceday. And most importantly Max has Red Bull strategists. Those are significant advantages.

Gotta be honest, I have to disagree with the track limits complaints. Last year, everyone was asking for the fia to be consistent with track limits. This year, the FIA is finally consistent in track limits. The white line everywhere and if you cross it with all 4 wheels you get warned/penalised. Can't start making exceptions for just millimeters or so. Drivers gotta do better if they don't want to get penalised.

i did the maths on it the other day, and in austria with 20 cars going through 10 corners (entry, apex, and exit) over 71 laps is 42600 potential track limits violations at a rate of about 8 per second. imo an automated system is the only reasonable way to enforce track limits edit: i also dont find the argument of whether they gain an advantage to be convincing, the line is the line. if you were talking about football and said "well the ball was only a millimeter over the line, there wasn't an advantage gained" you'd be laughed at, it would be a ridiculous statement. that's the risk you take by pushing the limits of the track, the drivers are well aware of that, and it wouldn't be an issue if the enforcement was consistent.
@MMAli-rq8kd

To be fair, it doesn't always come from pushing hard. Sometimes you lose control of the car or you *spin* or even *hit the wall* and come back to continue the race, would you give a penalty for that? Also, two cars collide and one gets penalty for "causing a collision" would you penalize both for the track limit infringement? Because an automated system would. Overall, however, I agree that it needs to be clearly *defined, standardized, and then automated* .

F1 should implement a system like what we have here for American sports. At least for football there is usually an announcement that goes like “Here at x stadium we pride ourselves with putting sportsmanship above all else. If you notice any unsportsmanlike behavior, text or call the hotline” I know with it being an international sport i can see it being more challenging with numbers and languages but its super useful because you just report your location and what’s happening and security will escort the person out

It’s a racing incident for me. With dirty air in front of him and the corner being awfully off-cambered, Russell got to the apex while Perez went deep on the brakes, pinching Russell on the inside with no more than a car’s width to the apex kerb. The rear wheel of Perez was always going to touch with the front wheel of Russell. Both driver misjudged the situation.

On the sensor front... I wonder how many sensors there are, and whether there's precise regulations on where they're placed. There've been a couple of cases in Indycar where teams putting their transponders in slightly different places has caused incorrect provisional results in photo finishes... So if there's no set location, what's to say a couple of teams aren't "accidentally" putting them in a location that gives a cm or two more wiggle room.

I've been watching your podcasts and IBR video's for years now and I love you guys, but there's 2 things I have to get off my chest after this podcast. First off was the joke about giving electrical shocks to the race directors in the track limits discussion and Katey's remark "Oh can we bring back Masi then?" I know it's a joke and all, but in the light of this weekend, where we have seen all kinds of upheaval over the boorish behavior of fans (who would probably use the "it was just a joke" excuse for their totally unacceptable behavior as well), I think that joke is inappropriate. That man has literally received death threats because of his decisions last year and if you're going to joke about physical punishment to him you're actually undermining your disapproval of the toxic environment that has lead to those excesses. We're always talking about how the drivers have to realize they are role models to some of their followers, then you guys should also realize that with over 1.1 million subscribers you have become that as well. Secondly there was the part where you were criticizing the marshal's response to the Sainz incident and even kinda making fun of him. You can't judge these people's reactions if you haven't been in their shoes. I work on an LPG terminal and am also trained in firefighting and as a first responder. I therefore look at it quite differently from you. When Sainz stopped his car, it looked like it was staying where it was and at that point flames could be seen. The marshal therefore started towards the car with his fire extinguisher. As he approached the car started rolling backwards as Sainz released the brakes. That changed the priority for the marshall to preventing the car moving first, so he put down the extinguisher and went to get blocks for the wheels (unaware that his colleague had already grabbed some as he passed right behind him). It may have looked like they didn't know what they were doing, but they actually followed protocol, which is to take care of their own safety first (preventing the car from rolling over them) even before that of the driver or putting out the fire. I have been to the scene of car accidents where, when a car is on its side, we have to prioritize stabilizing that car for our own safety before helping injured people inside the car. Maybe the FIA needs to look into safety systems or the protocols for the cars/drivers to make sure that on tracks where there are slopes they switch off the car in gear, so it doesn't roll. That may be a whole different discussion though, but I have to say: with all the outrage when Horner called a marshall rogue and the way you have been rightfully praising these unpayed heroes before, I found the way you spoke in this podcast of this guy, who was doing his very difficult and dangerous 'job', quite disrespectful. Anyway, sorry for going on a bit of a Katey rant here. I do love your podcasts, but I felt I had to say this.

They do not take away lot of visibility when you are inside the smoke. The smokes where put on at the warm up lap and at the end. It wasnt really bad in my opinion.

That was 20 years ago and not just under different management, but there have been at least five changes of every strategic manager position since that time. Regarding the fans behaviour and level of safety on the track i have to say i am very much shocked. Last year i attended this race, the whole weekend, in the Max Verstappen stand. I have to say i was fascinated, there were a lot of families and kids, and people enjoying themselves, yes there were people drunk and dancing in the tents, a lot of beer drank, but i havent seen a single incident going on and i felt very safe and was thinking "look at this", a whole new level a civilisation. People had fridges and chairs and blanckets to sit on, but no garbage left behind whatsoever, so this change at 180° within a year is awkward. Also there was security all over the place, pointing people what to do, and flares were on, but in a very non invasive way and it made the things even better. I am just speechless, i am not sure how this could happen.

Ferrari was also kind of soft on the team orders during the Vettel & Raikkonen years. Sometime they would do things like give Seb the better strategy than Kimi, but didn't often ask him to let Seb through when it seemed like the clear move in the fight with Hamilton in those years. At the time I was thinking that it had something to do with Kimi still being Ferrari's last WDC, so they weren't going to ask their champion to step aside.

I think it's possible that Ferrari pushed their engine closer to it's limit to offset the loss of pace in the anti-proposing measures coming up and it almost didn't work and close to a double dnf but in the end they won so it worked out.

@WTF1 you completely missed the mark with your marshal criticism and I mean COMPLETELY! The marshals are directed by race control and have stricts regs. As for that single guy, he was told to get the car with the large extinguisher because the small one would never be enough and they actually weren't allowed to go on track yet, because the VSC wasn't called yet. Very unfortunate take on the whole issue...

Correct me if im wrong since I haven't heard it anywhere. But doesn't Ferrari have a small turbo, this really help on higher altitudes, like RedBull had a smaller turbo then Merc the last couple years hence they were a lot faster also explains Hamilton being on 41 sec behind Charles. Well we'll see in Mexico.. If I'm right I expect Ferrari taking it over RedBull if this is the case.

You always gain when going off track expect if you lift of throttle for bit, which nobody does. You always gain either speed or tire saving by going wide on exit, that’s were they all leave tracklimits, on the Exit. If you can’t stay in between the lines you should get penalized. You have to judge your speed to fulfill the rules.

Nope, it very much is clear cut... Charles is miles quicker than Carlos. Also, he went to Ferrari in his second year in the sport and immediately had beaten 4-time world champion. The only reason Charles isn't miles ahead on points from Carlos is Ferrari being Ferrari (strategy, engine issues). There wasn't a single race this season where Carlos was quicker.

He grew up in Ferrari’s young driver academy. Ferrari started invested in him since his GP3 career. His Ferrari announcement was out mid season 2018. That was his rookie year in F1 and only a half season. Charles is so destined for Ferrari that I even fully understand Ferrari’s bias even if Charles and Carlos are on the same level. While Charles is miles ahead of Carlos in terms of talent, raw speed and wheel to wheel abilities, the answer is so clear. The only thing that in between is Santander’s money. We all know how Part 1 of Santander turned out. I do not want to see a Part 2.
