The Phone Compartment: Ok guys some clarification is needed here. When BMW announced this bike they did say it will have "wireless" charging but when they launched it, well, it does NOT have it. I talked with a BMW "insider" and he said that there was a problem with parts in the "logistics supply chain" for the inductive charging and they didn't want to stop the launch of the bike just because of this. This is why during the BMW press launch there is no mention of the type of "charging" (I watched it twice to see for myself) in the phone compartment but there is a USB C type connection for charging in the pocket. This is why the inductive charging didn't work for me while testing for this review. I just assumed that it was too hot out and what little charging it did or as in this case didn't do was due to a heat issue.

Thank you. I was going go comment on that very same topic. You covered it perfectly.
@petercwent2 жыл бұрын
To make this worse, the compartment does not lock with the central locking. So anyone may ‘borrow’ your usb cable (assuming you leave it in). And I suspect that the NFC in my phone interferes with the bike, because after a while I get an engine issue. It seems this is caused by a key not registered to my bike (which can only be my phone).
@theonlyredspecial2 жыл бұрын
Bmw sell special cables for this compartment. They are specific lengths with 90 degree headers and come in three flavours. USB c. Lighting and usb micro. They are quite expensive as You would expect. But Amazon sell some cables from an Asian brand that work reasonably well for a portion of the price
@petercwent2 жыл бұрын
@@theonlyredspecial i know, i bought that expensive cable, praying each time i park the car that no one ‘borrows’ this cable (as this compartment does not centrally lock). Besides this, a bike of €40K without wireless charging is in my opinion ridiculous

After 6 HD Touring bikes in a row from 2015 to 2021 (Road King, CVO Street Glide, CVO Limited, Road Glide Ultra, CVO Street Glide again, CVO Road Glide) this month I bought an R18 Transcontinental (about one month ago i wrote a comment under this video) full optional to try for something new and different. I must admit I was skeptical at the beginning due also to the many not so positive videos and comments I found on KZbin, mainly from the US. In reality this bike is much better than it was "tested" by some wannabe reviewers who decided to give judgements after a 30 minutes test ride: ridiculous. The R18 Transcontinental has a Torque, in REAL life and not just numbers on paper, that is definitely in line with a 114 ci V-Twin engine. And the engine? The first time I saw, by the Dealer, this 1800 cc Boxer I understood it was like a sort of mechanical Piece of Art: it's Statuary and nothing similar can be found on the market. Handling in winding roads or hairpin bends is way better than with an HD Touring bike: when I see a "test ride" made on large straight roads it makes me laugh... Suspensions are from another league with respect to HD ones even with Ohlins shocks as I always installed on my HDs. The 10.5 TFT can't even be compared to the small 6.5 TFT of an HD. The Audio system by Marshall is hands down better that the Boom Audio 2 by HD. The level of detail and attention to quality is, well... at BMW levels. The adaptive Cruise Control can only be dreamed of on an HD as it doesn't exist there. I was forgetting to mention the weight: it's EXACTLY the weight of a an HD Limited with full tank and, not on PAPER but in REAL life, You move an R18 TC with engine off in a parking lot a tad easier than an HD Limited. The rear gear is a nice tool but I never used it: I'm 5:10 or 178 cm and I'm 73 kg (not exactly Schwarzenegger...). I still love my CVO Road Glide and HD in general but... an R18 B or Transcontinental are GREAT bikes. Don't trust the many videos You find on youtube by people who tested these bikes for a 10 minutes Test-Ride or as HD fan-boys. One thing is loving HD bikes (as I do) another thing is being a childish HD fan-boy. Vibrations? Yes if you remain above 4000 Rpm a lot in rock mode. If You use Roll Mapping on a highway you can arrive till 3700 Rpm with vibrations under control: this means a cruising speed of 160 Kmh (more than enough if you're not in Germany). Scratch with floorboards: yes, but if you take off the protective bolts that are under the rider's floorboards you solve the issue. This is the only video or one of the very few I could find on KZbin that was fair and by a rider who knows how to ride a big Bagger.

Thanks for this assessment. I am buying this bike today, and my Harley friends are losing their minds. I am 6'3" and feel there is more room than the HD Ultra, and while I love HDs, I find the engineering on this machine is outstanding. I have ridden it 3 times for more than 4 hours, and I find myself nit-picking to convince myself it's "not" good. If I applied the same criteria to the Harleys it would be worse.

Just rode a 2023 R18 T/C, and all the negatives I’d seen on KZbin were highly exaggerated. Vibration, yes, but it was nonexistent at 80mph, and very light at 85mph, and never experienced any of the clutch slippage some reviewers stated was happening. I’ve owned all the Japanese bikes, two HD’s, Ducati, Triumph and BMW, and in my opinion, find the fit, finish and ride of the BMW to be more comfortable than the rest.

The typical boxer exhaust note and clatter comes through loud and clear on your sound track Scott. Music to the ears. I spent 400KM listening to the boxer symphony on my R1200s this riding through the Rocky Mountain foothills this afternoon. Such an underrated bike! Mine was the “Barber’s Pole” model, & it was a beautiful bike! I sold it to a good mate some years ago after he’d travelled to Europe from Australia on a holiday. Excellent video presentation and fantastic review. This I feel is BMW's best effort at the heavyweight touring cruiser segment and challenging Harley-Davidson. Yet all the while I can't help feel that BMW has just really launched a 21st century Honda Valkyrie. It will be interesting how the franchise dealers tale to and if the are able to sell it to Both Beamerphiles and non-BMW riders alike. Either way I wish BMW well and hope that it entices Honda to relaunch a 21st century version of their own classic tour-de-force Valkyrie!

BMW R18 B or Transcontinental (with Triumph Rocket 3 GT and Ducati V4 Multistrada Sport) are in my list of choice and this review was exactly what I was looking for. Highway speed and, most of all, Alpine roads and passes because here is where we usually use our bike. Well done!

Hello, you have tried both the R18 Transcontinental , R1250RTand the K1600 B/grand america. which one would you have chosen if you had to travel far with luggage and passengers on both on twisty roads and lots of autobahn? I am only 170 cm/5.6. thank you for your reply and thank you for all your reviews.
@NothingToProve Жыл бұрын
Out of the 3 bikes....hmm. 1250RT because it's the lightest and has the most room for a passenger and is still fun in the twisties. Now if weight was not a priority then the K1600 is in 2nd place and the R18 in last place. R18 is just too heavy and hard parts drag way too early to have any fun in curves and lack of leg room was irritating for me but with you being 170cm might be a good thing for you on the R18. But you won't have trouble "flat footing" any one of these 3 bikes. Autobahn - RT easily beats the other two, YES even the K1600, BMW needs to work on the aerodynamics of the K series like they did on the 2021 RT, they really did a lot of high speed wind tunnel testing and it is just perfect on the autobahn, my wife loves being on the back of the RT better than the K (and I've met several guys that have owned both the RT and the K1600 and their wives say the same thing...RT is better). I had the R18 Trans in my garage for a week and my wife sat on the back of it in the garage and refused to go for a ride with me ...LOL! BTW - luggage on the RT and K1600 are the same, in fact, I just bought the 49 liter top case for my RT and it's the same case for the K1600, just have to color match it for the color of the bike. good luck and take care, Scott

I rode this bike yesterday and I thought it was the worst bike I’ve ridden in years. The wind somehow blasts you chest but not your head. That’s fine if you ride only in the summer but that’s not me. And the rain would be terribly uncomfortable. This thing vibrates horribly above 2700 rpm’s. When you let off the throttle this vibration multiplies 8 times. I had to pinch my knees against the tank to reach the tiny inboard shifter and the back brake was just about as bad. When your knees are against the tank you get that awful vibration through your legs and butt. Fit and finish, and the suspension is the best I’ve ever seen. However, I absolutely hated this motorcycle and wouldn’t have it in my garage if it was 1/4th the price. BMW should be ashamed to put their badging on this piece of junk! Now, I also rode the K1600 B and loved everything about it and will be selling my Indian Challenger in the next week to get the K1600 B.

If BMW is going to compete in the Bagger and touring class in North America, they are going to have to do a much better job to win over the mainstay die hard Harley Davidson fans. The liners in the bags need to be thinner, and they need much more internal capacity. People are used to mounting their smart phones on devices designed to attach to the handlebars, which keeps the phone cool and also provides wireless charging. Options besides the mid controls, more along the lines of forward controls, without cylinder jugs in the way needs to be an option, even if your feet end up wider in stance than the cylinder heads, for clearance. An oil temperature gauge is far more important than a power reserve gauge. Everyone knows approximately what their "wrist throttle" settings are, and that will be confirmed by what the butt dyno tells you, too. I have a sneaking suspicion that the shaft drive provides frictional losses that cut down on your MPG's on the order of 5 to 8% compared to a belt drive or chain drive, as far as efficiency is concerned. Twisting gears through a bath of gear oil gets a lot less power to the rear wheel. Anyone that's ridden a bike with a Rohloff 13 speed geared hub, compared to derailleurs knows exactly what I'm talking about. It's a beautiful bike, the suspension ride quality is way better than anything stock in dressers or baggers from HD, but be sure to check out the price of fluids and parts on the service of this motorcycle. That G3 70w-80 hypoid gear oil is very, very expensive, that goes in the final drive shaft end as well as the gear box. Where I live, labor rates in CA are $180 an hour, and the time to work on these adds up fast. This is June 2023 rates. It is Not a cost effective bike to own, and still in 2023, they are not selling very well at BMW dealerships.

I think Honda drivers, other BMW and Triumph drivers will acclimatize well to this ride… but traditional N American cruiser, touring riders who are used to having fwd controls will struggle…especially if you’re anyone who puts on miles.

@NothingToProve2 жыл бұрын
There are patents on specific types of progressive springs but the actual name "progressive spring" no, it's simply a type of spring. There are two main types of springs Linear (probably the most common) and progressive. Harley, Honda, BMW & many more all use progressive springs. Here on this bike the difference is that it's not the spring that is progressive, it's the shock (the piston within the shock) that is progressive...and that is the new (well, fairly new) tech on this bike. ride safe, Scott

This is cruiser - touring bike, bagger on American market. I'm not sure will be popular here in the states. First thing, BMW motorcycle dealerships are very rare, in case if troubleshooting or same issue, you will be in big trouble finding dealer. Second, comfort on this bike ,same as Honda, not enough room for stretching your legs, you will be very cramp on long journey and nothing you can do since cylinder heads are on your way. That's big downfall compering with Harley and Indian which they have all comfort that you need for long trip.

Yes, some forward road footage would have been good . . . . must be that low seat he was on.

A gimmick. Can't see the point of this bike. I suppose it might have some use for long flat straight freeway/highways in the US but here in Europe no. Oh and that power reserve gauge is a gimmick too. Sorry Scott, don't like this bike. I shouldn't imagine BMW will sell that many.

Agreed. It was made for the American market, although I don't think it will sell here in Europe and will sell in the U.S. but in limited numbers.

@@NothingToProve I think you are 100% correct. Did you ever review the Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster? Have checked your back catalogue and cannot see it, so thinking maybe it's a bike that you you haven't. You have tested and reviewed the Bobber but this doesn't really do anything for me. Would be great if you could get hold of a Speedmaster. I am not really into cruiser bikes, but this one I really like the look of and it's supposed to be really rather good and I value your thoughts. ATB.

Until the fat lady sings joke aside, I want to appreciate this bike like I want to appreciate the opera. Bad on me that I just don’t get it, but good on those who do.

I was not able to upshift using the toe shifter. The heel shifter is absolutely required on this bike and it’s really tucked in close to the engine. My whole opinion of this bike was negatively impacted by this most basic ergonomic function. I was actually aggravated after the demo, something thats never happened on any other demo ride.
