How does the 4auto work? The last GM I had with this was awful. It felt like, for example - taking off from a slick intersection the rear would start spinning and the auto just slammed you into 4hi. It would then almost immediately go back into 2wd and the rear would spin again and then slam back into 4hi, this time for a longer time - enough to get through the intersection. My current Ford with 4auto uses a clutch style center diff and is seamless - it always starts with some lockup and then reverts to 2wd after awhile of steady driving. You can't tell when it is in 2wd or 4wd. It also disengaged on tight turns to stop the drive train from binding. I would like to see the 4 auto operations of these trucks better explained, it seems to always be passively mentioned with no details.
@dieseldrax2 жыл бұрын
The recent versions of 4Auto with GM trucks utilize Magna transfer cases that use a clutch for the front output. The torque output is variable and depends on road speed, throttle input, and wheel slip. It is effectively and technically full-time 4WD and is the same system used by Jeep in their full-time 4WD vehicles. Totally transparent and seamless when operating, my GMC has it and for a truck it's the best 4WD system out there if you live somewhere that it snows and the roads are patchy. You can set it and forget it. At low speed the torque output is minimal (but not zero) in order to prevent binding during low-speed turns and it will apply more torque the instant it senses wheelspin. No slamming into 4WD, it's very smooth and also very quick to respond.
@TheNotimprezed2 жыл бұрын
@@dieseldrax sounds similar, I think the Ford is using a borg warner

4auto functions the same as a rear wheel based AWD system. So it's not in 4wd until detects a slip, then it locks the clutch pack so that it behaves like a AWD system.

After owning a raptor, if you live in the southeast, you don’t want those twin turbo problems. Also damn near impossible to park in a normal parking situation. This truck gives you pretty much the same capability, but can park it in most normal parking spots. The raptor wins out on comfort though for sure, on seats, and suspension. But I love my ZR2. It’s the perfect truck for commuting and when you want to have serious fun on the weekends. Raptor was overkill. And so is trx. 99.9% of the owners will never do what it was designed for. The only truck I’d pick over this ZR2 would be a raptor R. But just can’t justify the price point. Also as a side note, I had the best exhaust you could possibly buy for a raptor and it still sounded like shit. V8 ftw. And after owning a 2017 SRT jeep, I’ll never own another Stellantis product. #DogShit

@haroldbeauchamp37702 жыл бұрын
This. GM is notorious for throwing some existing parts on an existing vehicle, branding it a special package, and selling it for beaucoup amounts of money. Literally nothing about this truck is special or new. GM could’ve done something spectacular and put the 6.2 supercharged engine from the Escalade V in it, and the 72k dollar MSRP would’ve been justified.
@jeffwill49232 жыл бұрын
The Caddy has been rumored for some sometime to get such SC. I recall seeing mules in 2019. Black wing sedan received updated 6.2L 1st. GM clearly is being consistent in this area. A Tahoe has been seen speeding away at great speed. It appears only suvs will receive such SC from Caddy. We are still in the dark with trucks because no truck mule has been testing with such Tahoe. To be honest GM went all in on Hummer. Building a similar truck to that model is pushing it. There will likely be a HD ZR2 based off recent pics.

I suspect the auto four-wheel drive button just switches from 2 high to 4 high whenever slip is detected. If it's a conventional engine / transmission / 50/50 in 4hi transfer case setup, how can pressing the automatic button suddenly pretend the vehicle has a center differential with the ability to vary torque from front to rear?
@terrencejones98172 жыл бұрын
It effectively does have a center differential. The T-case has a clutch. When 4wd auto is activated, the front axle is engaged full time, the T-case clutch sends roughly 10% power at all times through the front. You can feel steering get heavier when in auto awd as well. When slip is defective the clutch provides a full 50/50 split in power. It works extremely well especially in snow.

@terrencejones98172 жыл бұрын
@@deejayimm Yes. Both 4wd low and high have a fixed 50/50 torque split. The difference is only in which planetary is engaged hi vs lo. In Auto it can quickly switch to 50/50 split, but it can also vary the torque split depending on wheel speed differences. The only downside to the system is the eventual clutch wear, otherwise its extremely good. Also to note, GM also employs brake torque vectoring, they just don't advertise it much. TFLs own ZR2 can be seen doing it, they don't have the lockers engaged and you can see the torque transfer to the wheel with grip.
