The highlight for me was @6:35 with that runner. Then again i'm a midsized guy. Many years ago I got a blue v-8 dakota quad cab 4x4, showed up to my dad's house on the way home and went wtf. He had bought the same exact truck same color only 2500 heavy duty on the same day at a different place, dude same year. Kick a! father and sun (because i'm so bright) trucks. It was a good laugh.

I didn't expect the fuel economy to be that bad, but then I remember the diesel F-250 Super Duty got 2.3 MPG on the same test. But then again, it was pulling three times the weight.

@@philllsxga.7737 The point is to see if trucks can hold the speed limit up the hill. A lot of trucks with bigger loads can't, so their time goes up. They can't just blatantly break the speed limit when HWY patrol is all over that road. I would also like to see trans/oil temps. Though not all trucks show that info.

Not sure why it’s always mentioned the ZR2 is overpriced when a Tremor F150 can hit 70K too and doesn’t get a front locker or fancy shocks. You can hit 70K with any luxury half ton these days. ZR2 is standard as luxury truck.

Because being able to hit 70k is way different than not being able to get it for under 70k period. The zr2 is nearly 30% more expensive. Chevy forces you into bells and whistles while Ford will let you just get the off-road bits you want without all the frills.

@@kahless0173 The trail boss exists for people wanting less but still a more off-road oriented truck. I agree the ZR2 should come in lower equipment levels but that doesn’t make it too expensive for what it is relative to competition.

Love the content fellas. While I can understand the WANT to compare these two truck, they are not in the same category. The TRX is a supercharged, high horsepower, wide body, long travel suspension, halo truck. The ZR2, while it may be Chevy's halo truck, is an offroad beast with a very nice suspension and big NA V8, that you can daily without it being too large, inefficient and cumbersome like the TRX. Raptors and TRX(es) are for those who can afford two vehicles, one of which being their toy. Just my opinion. I know everyone has a different one. Still my favorite Truck/4X4 reviewers out there. 😉

I think we can see which truck is inefficient. I see plenty of TRX daily driving around here and the only problem I can think of as being a daily is it's aggressive looking nature. Seems like the truck is comfortable and the suspension plush and it's no less efficient than the 6.2. Equal displacement, supercharged, 700hp better towing mannerisms and better fuel economy. Where is the Chevy more practical?

I just wish it had lived up to what Ram first showed us. The TRX concept was 100% legit with droop stop straps and beefy control arms. Then the clowns at Stellantis neutered it.

There is usually some info on hitch non WD vs WD weights. For example my 08 Suburban has 5,000 lb limit w/o WD vs 12,000 with WD 4.11 gears. Did that change with these newer trucks because of liability factors.

Not to be an ass. But it seems like I haven't seen a lot of Ike gauntlet videos since you guys did a few on the HD trucks during summer. I hope you permanently do your annual HD truck test in mid July. I'd like to know if I spend 90k on a new HD 1 ton, that it can handle max towing on the Ike in worst case scenario temps in July. I know you guys have had a huge impact on how the big 3 test thier rigs, especially on the Ike at 11k feet. Making them aware of what it takes to cool those V8 diesels at 11k feet and 105 degrees Fahrenheit can only be a good thing right? Keep up the great work guys. You all do so much to inform the buying public about the capabilities that matter in the real world. So we can buy according to our needs we'll informed. If Ford, Chevy and Ram all build cooling systems capable of keeping temps steady at max towing capacity on the Ike in triple digits, all of us benefit right? Thank you all at TFL for what you do. Strange that an Australian Off Road Caravan, although Chinese built and owned, has become the default load for several TFL tests. 19ft internal 25ft overall is pretty common here.

Two awesome trucks. I'm not surprised of the result. I like the look of the ZR2 over the Ram, however I'm a huge fan of Ram; especially the TRX. I'm surprised that no one is mentioning that the Chevy's new screens and stuff kind of look like an after-thought compared with the 12" screen in the Ram. As much as I love the UConnect system, I think that the infotainment software in the Chevy is better. Another factor is that you are seated lower in the cab inside the Chevy which I don't think is as good for off-roading as the driving position in the Ram or the even a Ford Raptor. I noticed that none of the journalists who review these trucks mention this. Maybe because they are over 6 ft and probably don't notice it.

@@timradke7775 Have to admit that there are somethings that Chevy did right with the current gen Silverado. However it is nothing to write home about in terms of trading my 2014 Ram in for one. I would trade in my Ram in for a new PowerWagon though.

The seat height in the 2019+ Silverado is noticeably better than it was in any GM truck sold in the last 30 years. It's much closer to the F-150 than it once was. The ZR2's hood gives the sense that the seat height is lower.

@@hochhaul I went to the Chevy dealer last week and had a look at the new ZR2. I concur, the position is better than when I compared it 2 years ago. At that time I was comparing it to my 2014 Ram 1500. There's been a change in the interior design from the 2021 model. I noticed it immediately. However I'm still not sold on getting a Chevy over a Ram. If I was getting a new 1500 truck, the Chevy would be on my shortlist.. certainly way above Ford. But I'd stick with the Ram 1500. If I was really going for new truck, my first choice would be a PowerWagon.

I have always been a gm guy but my ram trx has been amazing, does everything. It's a hot rod, you can dune it almost like a utv, it towes my enclosed trailer perfectly, and on road trips it rides and drives like a Cadillac. The offroad capabilites or more than most people would ever do. Cruising down freeway i can get 15.5 mpg and that is with a 37.

I remember reading somewhere that the Ram trucks and some other similar lines will bottom out their mpg at ~4.7. I was trying to find the story but couldn’t. Anybody else remember that discussion?

I definitely believe it. I really wish they would test the mpg for this loop more accurately because every fiat product they have run up there short of heavy duties has been 4.7. I’m supposed to believe that the gladiator, ram with the hemi, ram trx, all magically get 4.7? Across years and condition changes and different trailers? I don’t but it fit a second. I believe they stop reading lower which has skewed all of their results.

It would be interesting to see if there’s any changes in the future after you’ve owned the ZR2 or some time, like you’ve had with the TRX. I would be curious to see if the computer learns your driving habits and towing habits by then… Maybe it would adjust the downhill performance. Maybe not.

I noticed on the weight slip your drive axle on the ZR2 was at 3400 pounds. I’m not sure what the RGAWR is on the ZR2 but a typical Silverado Z71 1500 will be about 3800 pounds. So based off that you were within 400 pounds of the max rear axle rating with just you in the truck. I’d say that’s why you were getting the warning from the truck when Nathan was with you plus any extra camera equipment you may have had. Sounds like that trailer is very tongue heavy which is pretty typical for trailers like that. That’s why they are pushing the limits of a half ton truck even though they “only” weigh 7,000 pounds. Also as for fuel economy I think every Ram you ever test says 4.7 on the Ike towing at a minimum. I tend to think maybe 4.7 is as low as that fuel economy reading will go.

I didn't look that closely at the slip but I'd be shocked if they weren't over on payload for both trucks with that trailer. They have to be close anyway and not much if anything in the beds.

@@redracerproductions I know the rear axle was 3400 and I’m pretty sure the front was 3100 or 3150. So about 6500 or 6550 with just Andre in the truck with the trailer hooked up. I think the GVWR is 7000 for a ZR2. They were definitely close and almost certainly exceeding the rated max tongue weight of the ZR2.

should have option the chevy truck to match the price of the TRX, if u did that, u would be impressed with the air suspension option on the z71 among other cool things.....never thought i would be a chevy guy, i rented a truck from hertz for business, turns out it was a fully loaded tahoe z71, feel n love and went and bought one, hard 2 beat the options this thing has.....

The two GOATs. Two cool trucks too ;) I think I like the Silverado a little more aesthetically, but I wish the bottom of the grille wasn't so square. It looks like a piece of the front is missing, making the TRX look more like a more cohesive design.

Ill say it time and time again, Ram with its 8 speed is much better with downhill performance every time. Always 1-2 no matter the weight. With the fuel eco difference i feel like having an abundance of power beyond what you need it does stress the power train out as much and it will run more efficient

The 8sp isn't what makes it good at going down hill. More gears is better in that regard because the trans can keep the engine in the correct RPM easier. What makes the Ram TRX good downhill as far as braking performance goes, is the super charger. The super charger sucks a lot of power to spin. That extra drag makes it act similar to an exhaust brake, only in this case its basically an intake brake.

@@Stuka87 its with every ram not just the trx. Everyone 1-2 brake applications. And yes i do believe it is the 8 speed. Every truck that has a 10 speed performs the same as the zr2 in this video. Usually around 5. The 8 speeds gearing is better at holding the truck back. In my old truck that had a 5 speed it was much more aggressive than my current ram with the 8 speed. Although the 8 speed performs fantastic

@@ALMX5DP Centrafugal's have a bypass valve (loud wooshing sound when off throttle). But a roots style relies on the throttle blade being closed to limit air. The throttle blade being closed is what makes engine braking work. Engine creates a big vacuum that slows its rotation. The same happens with a roots type blower.

@@dcsteve7869 seen many with over 200k miles and if you drive it right it gets better mpg so not sure what you’re talking about there, and gm is the least reliable vehicle you can buy. Take a lawsuit for them to fix the ongoing lifter problems on their v8s…. Hundreds of videos to prove it. You should research a little before commenting.

@@freedomisntfree_44 No. I drive one every day. It's fine around town lightly loaded. Sure it has power but it sucks for towing and hauling daily. Awful economy when loaded and next to zero engine braking. My 17 Sequoia is a much better tow rig than my F-150 Ecoboost. It gets better economy wen towing our 6500lb trailer or when traveling 120km/hr or faster on the highway. The Toyota's have god awful economy in town. So really it depends what you do with your truck.

@@freedomisntfree_44 I know all about the lifters and the facts are it's less than a 1% failure rates and isn't present on current generations. The 8L90 issues were traced to transmission fluid, something easily fixed with Mobile one HP LVP. Wards listed the gmt800/900 as one of the longest lived vehicles on the road today taking the #2 and #4 spots with two different models. In dependability studies GM has 3 brands in the top 10 most reliable including Chevy. Compare that to Dodge which falls near the bottom of the lists and Ford which barely maintains industry averages. The Ecoboost itself has had numerous problems including failing cam variators, oiling problems and turbo failures as well as a number of heat related issues. That's on top of the thousands of complaints about the vehicles not even coming close to their epa rated fuel economy. You won't find a credible source out there that recommends the Ecoboost over the V8 within the Ford family if there is an option, so maybe YOU should do your research before commenting

Can you do a comparison between the Chevrolet ZR2 Silverado and the Dodge Ram Rebel? The Rebel is more similar I feel than the TRX. The TRX and the Raptor is in the same class. Now if you compared those two to the Jackal that would be awesome, obviously the Jackal isn’t a factory production truck.

Well the TRX didn't have to work as hard cause if the power. Reminds me of back in the day I has a Tacoma v6 4x4 and my buddy had the same truck with a 4cyl. I got better mpg than him.

That Trailer is too heavy to used without weight distribution. That might have something to do with your over weight warning. Also stop complaining about the seats, they are slightly firm when new only. I have 50k on 2019 Trailboss, I spent 2 hours a day in it. I'm 6'2" 240lbs. The seats are fine.

Front and rear lockers. No other 1/2 ton truck has that. Multimatic DSSV suspension. New interior from top to bottom. Multi function tailgate is an option. Adaptive cruise control.

Idk why the mileage results are a surprise. The TRX got better mileage because the engine isn’t as stressed compared to the ZR2. Andre even mentioned having to have his foot in the ZR2 more.

These trucks are considerably different. While there is a 1/2 ton vs 3/4 ton discrepancy, I almost feel that the Power Wagon and ZR2 are more in the same ballpark for off-road capability. It feels more like a super capable off-roader/crawler than a pre-runner even though its DSSV shocks allow for that. Perhaps one day we will get an SS version with a wide body and supercharger.

@@oneslackr didn’t think I’d get a response after a year! It’s was just as I was thinking through it, really. The Power Wagon is a very capable off-road truck built on Ram’s HD platform, That by itself makes it quite a bit different than the 1500 platform that the ZR2 is based on. The ZR2 isn’t a Raptor or TRX, but it’s lockers, suspension and underbody protection puts it in the same arena as what Power Wagon’s claim to fame was for off-road use. I also realize that this comment didn’t age great because we now have a 2500 ZR2 and AT4X HD. Those are more squarely in the sights of the Power Wagon, but I like the idea of the lighter weight 1500 with front and rear selectable lockers.

I think some of the reason that you had so few brake applications was because the wind resistance from the trailer heigh held you back..

would be cool if you matched trailer size to tow rig size. like we are looking at teardrop 1500-3000 lbs max... I'd like smallest, most capable, best mpg rig that is Very comfortable towing it. I don't think I need one of these beasts. but would a 4Runner be enough? struggling? I do have 3 kids... not looking for rock crawling, but fast timber roads in oregon. would a Volvo XC90 T8 work? Volvo V90 Cross Country (with KO2's?) Rivean? New Sequoia Hybrid? but that seems soo big to me. (M3 driver... camping rig shopper)

You can tell Andre is obsessed with the ZR2. I think the Chevy is probably the better tow rig in this situation. Like someone said in another comment the TRX is an off road toy not a daily driver. The power train in the Chevy is great I just do not like the new design of any of the Chevy trucks. The GMC’s look much better.

Agreed, Andre obsessed with looking ugly. What's even more astounding to me is the fact that people are actually warming up to this fugly direction the Chevs have gone. Proof positive that they could put a bowtie on an actual turd & you'd have suckers lining up around the block to buy it.

For trucks like this the TRX is my first Choice. For GM I'd take the AT4X or even a AT4 before the ZR2. the look of it and the interiors are nicer than the Chevy's And if I'm spending that much money (or have that much to spend) already a few thousand more for the GMC doesn't really matter.

I might say the Colorado ZR2 is the most capable off-road truck,,,,. Size, smaller, matters in many cases off-road. If you include trucks that can take modifications,,,, the Gladiator mildly modified, sayyyy a 3” lift 35s to 37s (37s are still tight with only a 3” lift) with the Rubicon package and you are there. The Gladiator is short on power unless you have a diesel (a little front heavy), the Colorado is fine for power unless you have the diesel,,, 😂😂. Go figure. The diesel isn’t so front heavy on the Colorado diesel. Semantics though. For many, it’s all about POWER!!! Arrrr arrrrrr!! Power on both vehicles are just fine!! Ram has their transmission dialed in a little better than the competition regarding how it uses the engine braking. The others tend to stay in too high of a gear. Ram is set for towing the moment you hook it up. They are always a little different between the brands. The economy of that 6.2, when driven reasonably, is really quite decent. I know of guys with the 6.2 doing better than the 5.3, both in Denalis. We have a lot of heavy winds here and the 6.2 doesn’t work much in the wind, but it noticeably affects the 5.3. They all drive with 87 octane. They are farmers and if the truck can’t handle what is said to be ok by the manufacturer, the truck isn’t worth it,,, 😂😂 plus here they can run dyed fuel at 87 octane that has much less tax in it. The ZR2 is much better on fuel running empty or lightly loaded,,,,, they forgot this when comparing the trucks at the end. The ZR2 only had 1.75” squat as I saw it,,,,,,. Haha. More than acceptable. Squat is the reason that if you are towing or hauling, you shouldn’t level the truck. The rake is designed to account for the weight in/on the back of the truck. If you level it, you look goofy going down the road and your headlights are blinding the people coming at you in the night,,,,,. My preference of these two trucks is the Chevy!! I’m surprised myself,,,,. I currently drive. F150 Tremor with the Torsen front differential, and a mostly loaded XLT trim. I paid $76,000,,,, CANADIAN!! That’s about 22% less than the ZR2. It could be a serious factor in sales. The Torsen front end is very aggressive so it is not too bad off-road, just like the Raptors.

Does the truck with the highest torque output generally get the best fuel mileage? A few years ago TFL Truck did an Ike Gauntlet with the F-350 (with 1050 ft /lb torque) vs the less powerful Chevy (or was it a GMC) Druamax with 910 ft/lb torque. The Ford was faster and more fuel efficient up the Ike. TFL Truck was also surprised at the results then also.

Yes. And you'll especially notice the size change on lower powered vehicles. More fuel use, heavier, slower.

The problem with the IKE Gauntlet towing test is that it naturally and exponentially favors Turbo Charged engines. Like a 6.2L vs a 3.5L ecoboost at sea level is a nose and nose race. At 2 miles above sea level, the turbocharger will always overperform. Given that 90-95% of us don’t live in the Rockies, it produces skewed and often misleading results

So what your saying is that the Chevy can hang on low-lying flat areas? Living in the Great Smoky Mountains and pulling a camper the ecoboost is a no brainer. It’s really confusing why Ford and Toyota are the only people who use a twin turbo v-6 as their premier engine. Only time will tell about the durability of these, but there are tons of high mileage ecoboost around if you look. The torque curve of a forced induction engine simply cannot be matched by any normal NA V8. I spent the last several years owning a 5.7 Limited Toyota Tundra. Best truck I’d ever owned up to that point. So far in my 30k miles on my ecoboost F150 there is no comparison when it comes to towing. As far as MPG goes, the tundra 5.7 is notorious for bad fuel economy. So the ecoboost is somewhat of an upgrade. However, put some weight behind it, or keep your foot in it and it really isn’t any better than any other modern truck.

I’m not questioning the validity of the results, I’m questioning the scope of the test. Unless you live in the Rocky or other high mountainous regions, this test is largely irrelevant to the capability of an 8 cylinder NA engine vs a turbo v6

@@coachmixer8230 the only time your comparison would matter was if you were somewhere totally flat, without hills at all. Doesn’t matter how high the mountain or hill, 10ft or 10,000. The turbo will outperform the NA every single time you aren’t on flat ground.

@@kylechrestman6955 that’s patently false, air density shares an inverse relationship with altitude. The higher the altitude, the lower the density. If you were going from 0 ft up a mountain to 3,000 feet, the 6.2 would perform much better than going from 7,000 to 10,000 feet. I’m not sure how you’re drawing that conclusion that “any” hill will yield the same result.

The altitude change will have less of an effect on the supercharged TRX than it will on the NA ZR2. This is part of the reason the TRX has better gas mileage

The trade in trx we got had 2.1 mpg on the dash so it's not limited at 4.7

i own a 21 TRX and i tow a 2003 Tundra from PA to SC on sport mode and it was better than on Tow Mode....I wasted more gas on Tow Mode than on Sport Mode.......

Thats pretty normal. Tow haul isnt trying to save you fuel. Its goal is to tow as effectively as possible. It changes shift points and will hold gears longer to help you out

Tow/haul mode is supposed to change shift patterns to reduce wear and increase control when towing. This means it will hold higher rpms for longer. Higher rpms usually means lower mileage. Wear is most prominent with high heat and if a transmission is shifting more, that increases heat.

I don't understand why they are comparing two trucks with almost a 300hp differential in a towing test. Apples and Oranges. If they put the C7 Vette ZR1 motor in this truck (which is basically Supercharged 6.2L) then you would have a real comparison. Which has me thinking...please do GM!

Let's see some apt comparisons. ZR2 vs TRD Pro vs Rebel GT vs Tremor. TFL is supposed to be real world consumer reviews, comparing to a wide body long travel supercharged truck is kind of like comparing a Miata to a Cayman - the basics are there, but the differences are plenty. I'm not bias for or against either truck, I'd just like to see honest reviews with relevant segment competitors. Say both trucks are the most off-road worthy from each brand doesn't put them in the same class/field. /Rant

I hate that ball mount. I don't care what they rate it for. I don't care how many are in use nationwide. I'd never use one. WAY too many joints, bolts, nuts, and parts there. By its very design there are more failure points, and failure of a hitch could be catastrophic. The K.I.S.S. principle definitely applies to trailer hitches and ball mounts.

It also puts the pivot point way back there, giving the trailer more leverage/downforce on the truck’s hitch. And you can’t use weight distribution bars, exacerbating the issue (or so it would seem to me.)
