Nicole, your videos always cheer me up. I started a donation based flower stand last year after a winter of binge watching your videos. It was a booming success in my small town. Watching your content gave me the push I needed to follow my passion for growing flowers and veggies into a dream. I love knowing their are others out there that love growing like I do. Wishing you a great success for this growing season❤️

Nicole, re the delphiniums- check out Sarah's video at Bloom and Gray from last year about starting delphiniums. I've never been able to grow them before, but with her method I had about 80% success! A bit fussy, and VERY slow to produce true leaves, but they grew, and some bloomed first year! The rest are are tucked in the gardens and happy.

Nicole- I seeded about 100 Chabaud Carnations last summer and I got ONE decent stem that really wasn't anything fantastic. I actually laughed at what a miserable failure they were. I'm not wasting my space on anymore carnations. I'm not sure why mine failed?!? I did successfully grow some in planters because I carelessly sprinkled the rest of the seeds in mixed flower planters and they actually grew in those, but not to a stem length for cut flower bouquets. I'm sticking with what grew so fantastically for me- Dahlias, peonies, zinnias, snaps, roses, penstemon, rudbeckia, Phlox, Nigella, scabiosa, and eucalyptus.

I am sure you are aware the rudbeckia trilobas act like biennials, and are prolific self seeders. No problem weeding out seedlings, but many people don't connect what the seedlings look like versus the mature plants. There is a fair amount of difference from a first year seedling versus the foliage of the mature plant. They are a great garden border plant and offer prolific (thousands and thousands of blooms) and the seed heads are a wonderful dried arrangement plants as well. Keeping them where I want them-- not always easy. The seem to want to move front and center for me rather than being part of a supporting cast and filler. They make a great arrangement bunched on their own. Rabbits seem to leave them alone. I think deer do, too. Don't plant them inside the fence! Full sun where they can do as they like!

I have a tip to help you organize your flower seeds. If you hang a plastic sandwich baggie on a makeshift clothes line with a clothes clip (dollar store) then you can label "Snapdragon", "Sunflower", etc. then take handfuls of packets and drop em in a bag like teachers set up Valentine Card distribution. I then group filled sandwich bags into a Gallon Zip Lock- YOU can label that bag "Fillers", "Thrillers" or "Spillers" Or just list the bags inside or inventory- Bag "A", "B" blah blah blah...moist. Hee hee

Ahhhh this is so inspiring. I'm still in the "clear a half acre 15 feet tall brambles and nettles" stage of my flower farm and don't think I'll be planting much this season, so I am living vicariously. Okay, so I’m a total veggie seed addict however last year I started wandering into the flower section and this year I’ve definitely wandered a bit further. That story about you buying seeds for your sister from Baker Creek was too perfect. I rewound it so my husband could hear it and I said “See! She gets it! Imagine if you could have so much joy for only $20 at Home Depot with free shipping!”😄. I went to place an order at another place but when I see $8 for shipping I think “that’s 2 seed packets that I could get from Baker Creek”(I really do have a problem, don’t I). Great video, thank you for sharing! Now I’m off to check out your veggie seed haul.

I dont feel so bad with my seed "issue" now 😀. I'm in the UK and have a double allotment, I'm dedicating half of it to cut flowers, its quite addictive! Not sure if you can get these in the US but I've just ordered Brighton Rock Snap dragons, they look amazing, the other one that I think you will like is Frosted explosion Panicum Elegans, again they look amazing . . . . will let you know how I get on. Thank you for your vid's your fuelling my inspiration. take care x

Okay Nicole, I thought I was done ordering seeds!! After watching this, there are many more I NEED to order. I’ve been meaning to try statice and that sunflower/statice bouquet of yours convinced me! So pretty! Thanks for encouraging my seed hoarding! 😉 🌱

I'm glad you are going to try delphinium. I've thought about your cool weather, that it might be just perfect for growing it. I hope they take off. I've never grown them before, want to very much.

The only crop I ever started from seed were foxgloves (years ago). They never self sowed in my garden, so it was (and is) the same process every year...start from seed, plant out, watch the foliage grow and the plant get established, get snowed on (etc.) flower the following year...repeat. When the plant is done, I save some seeds, dig up the old plant to replace with the new seedling. I have had foxgloves in my garden for as long as I can remember. It was years later I started to grow other flowers from seed...but it all started with foxgloves. Don't give up...they should self-seed very well in your area. Maybe plant them off to the side near your woodland area and let them do their thing. Cheers!

Ok, I just went through the comments and nobody has talked about this. Azureus Blue Sweet Pea is very different from any other sweet pea I’ve grown, (and I stopped counting at around 65 varieties.) I’ve grown them for 2 years now and they are lovely but not what most people would expect. Enjoy them for what they are. They don’t fit into the mold exactly. Observe the differences as you grow them. The seeds are shaped different, the vine/foliage looks different (fine, wispy tendrils), the growth habit is shorter than what one normally would expect from a sweet pea. The blooms are an incredible blue, but smaller than you might expect from looking at the Baker Creek picture. I have used some in my bouquets, but more as the “spiller” or airy accents, winding tendrils around a sturdier stem in the bouquet. (And not too many, or it just looks messy.) Anyway, have fun and happy growing! Hope this helps someone !😊💐

Nicole!! All the flowers you have trouble getting started are cool flowers 💐 I think you mentioned you took the flower farming course with Lisa Mason Ziegler. Fall sow those babies or better yet, winter sow them. Dianthus, carnation and delphinium are stupid easy to start using winter sowing. I’m in 6b in Canada. Zero issues with those using WS. Loooved seeing all your new seeds. Happy dreaming flower friend 😊

So I started watching and was thinking, “oh I like that. I like that one….ohhh that one is nice!!!” And I came to the conclusion that there is not enough time or land to have them all. 😂 The Yarrow will self seed like crazy. The Pacific Giant Delphiniums will also self seed BUT with them they get a little bug that will eat the main stem and ether make it die or make it side branch like crazy and they will be small short and pathetic for your needs. I have the biannual foxglove and hope it survived to this year to flower. Stock are my favourite of all time, my nonna grew them every year and their smell brings me back to sitting on the step with her beside them blooming. You are a flower farmer, I EXPECT you to have boxes and BOXES of seeds…. Don’t apologize about them, or your messy kitchen, its part of our genetics 😉 In my fridge I have nectarines and peach seeds sprouting 🤣😂🤣😂
