Hi Flower Friends! Here is what I am growing for dahlias this year. 2020 was a bad dahlia year for me. I had disease and rot. I lost nearly all of my stock in the field. I am not giving up on these beauties!
These were ordered from:

Yay! So good to know. It was truly difficult to narrow down my varieties this year. I lost SO many amazing ones- the Penhill, Labrynth, too many to count. I feel confident with this quantity .....today....😂

@@FlowerHillFarm I know nothing about having a hard time narrowing down dahlia varieties. I'm the very picture of restraint when it comes to dahlias. *Some facts in this comment may be stretched for mental health reasons.

I grew my first ever Dahlias from seed about 6 years ago, and OMG. I have never had as much success from tubers or cuttings since. They were crazy....Not one was under 4ft tall and 3ft wide. The tubers they produced from seed astounded me. Unfortunately I was new to growing and had to lift them for winter as I have heavy clay and Dahlias do NOT like staying wet through winter as I am sure you know. I had no experience of how to keep them and my tubers didnt make it through storage....totally my fault. But this year I am sowing seeds again and can not wait to see what pops up.....sooooo excited.

First of all, I'm envious of your sunshine. No sun in Southern Wisconsin for many days! I'm glad that you aren't giving up on dahlias. However, you never give up and that is why you have so many fans. You stay positive and keep on fighting for success! You search for solutions and growing dahlias from both seeds and tubers is a great idea. Hopefully you will get more rain in 2021!

2020 was the first year I successfully grew bakers creek unwin dahlias. They get so tall in the pots and are falling over. By the time I planted them out, most grew sideways for an inch or two before going up. They still bloomed for me. Vase life wasn't impressive though. They did form tubers so we shall see if they survive my attic.

I'm looking forward to seeing your dahlias grow, best of luck!! 😊 I planted dahlias for the first time last year (unfortunately only in containers, I live in a flat) and didn't have much luck either, but I think I know what I did wrong, so I only bought a couple this year and I'm still hoping the ones that bloomed last year will come back again (not sure, I'm in a zone ~9b/10a but we had a rare hard and snowy winter). I almost bought a huge dahlia plant in full bloom at the nursery today too, but I didn't. (I might go and get it though!! 😅) It's also interesting to learn about prices in other countries. Here you can find tubers at local nurseries for 2-5€ and the full grown plant was 6€. Cheers all the way from Greece!!

😟 Oh no!!! That totally sucks! In one of my recent dahlia videos I showed one dahlia that had Crown Gall, it was MASSIVE! Luckily it was just one, but it still performed okay and produced blooms, but it wasn't as vigorous as the other ones. After digging it, I threw it in the trash. I hope they'll all be better for you this season. 💕 PS I'm taking Floret's class this year, I'm super excited. 😍

I wish this year will be better and you can enjoy all the blooms. Some gardeners dont like flowers you need to dig out in winter, they think it is to much care, in case of dahlias I think it is still worth it. It blooms for me till first frost. This year many of my tubers dont get to bloom just because of snails they ate lots of leaves and the plants just dont catch up. I dig up all the tubers and hope they have enough energy for next years show.

I would expect them to be on the shorter side and between 3 to 5 rows of petals. Love the enthusiasm you have, from a different side of Dahlia growing than myself. All love for Dahlias is good love. Best of luck you will have seeings coming out of your ears, I hope some of them give you what you are looking for. 😀

This year was my first time growing Dahlias from seed with the Floret DD seed packet. I had great success! It was so funny being surprised by the different blooms. My most successful plant had bright yellow full double blooms. A lot of the others looked somewhat deformed, but still cute. My understanding is there is no way to know what you will get from seed, so it’s interesting to me that Johnny’s sells a descriptive seed variety. I guess I need to research some more 😃

I have been growing Dahlias in my yard since 1988 and offer this advice. I was taught by expert growers in our local Dahlia Society that you should not purchase your tubers from the large "Resellers" because those tubers (in clumps) are harvested outside of the United States and often come in poor shape, with broken necks, and often with diseases like gaul. These are often what you will also find in the big box stores. You need to get your tubers in single form from the many reputable growers in the United States or Canada (if they can ship to the U.S.) so that you will get really good tubers. These can be found on the Dahlia Addict website, and include but are not limited to Swan Island, Accent Dahlias, Cowlitz Dahlias, Big Dahlias, Hollyhill Dahlias, Ferncliff Dahlias, and many more. Some of these people are actually the hybridizers, the "creators" of these beautiful flowers you are desperate to grow at home and they will not sell you junk. These will cost you more that what you buy in the junk department, but it will be well worth it when you see the blooms you get. I also recommend that you join some of the Dahlia groups on Facebook, such as ISO - Dahlias and Dahlia Information on Growing and Exhibition. You will learn a great deal of knowledge to help you with your own Dahlias.

Good luck to you this year with your dahlias. I love dahlias, I am a home Gardner so do not grow on your scale. This year I have started some dahlia seeds for the first time. Hope yours do well.

You are hilarious and an inspiration. Your passion and love for the beauty of flowers is lovely. You definitely have more cash to use but I am inspired to take a chance on flowers for profit, and, almost more importantly, to spend more effort relishing that beauty instead of just growing food like a maniac (have been growing veg for years but thought flowers were a frivolous luxury-how wrong I was!)

So pretty! I'm also planting tubers and seeds(including erin's). Can't wait to see what comes from the seeds. ADR bulbs is another place to get some good bulk tubers for businesses but they do have a minimum. You should check out the dahlia citron du cap... its so lovely to stick your face into

I grew Bishop’s Children dahlias in 2019. They were very easy to grow and I grew the saved tubers last year. It was a lot of fun because you don’t know what you are going to get until they bloom. I was surprised by how many tubers my plants produced the first year. This year I’m going to try Red Skin Mix. Good luck!

Oh those deep, rich burgundies...luscious. (I just ordered some Moulin Rouge Sunflowers from Johnny's about 10 minutes ago.) Last year, Sow True Seed offered "zodiac" seeds and just for fun, I ordered my sign, Taurus, and they happen to be mixed single dahlias. I didn't plant them last year for lack of space and it's a good thing because my garden last year was a disaster (late cold wet spring, NO availability of any plants, complete lockdown so no community garden, knee/hip injury, moved to a new house). So if I can find these dahlia seeds, I'll join you in trying them out this year. Good luck!

I'd really like a video on how the storing of dahlia tubers went this winter. Mine didn't go so well. I think I"m going to try plastic wrap and paraffin methods for 21.

Nothing to do with this video, but have you tried sea Holley? Eryngium (or something like that). I grew from seed with some success - beautiful for bouquets. Johnny’s has a “white glitter” and a “blue glitter” variety. So pretty. I just hope they keep coming up themselves and I don’t have to grow from seed every year.

As sunflower Steve said you are now a professional gambler. I never know what is going to happen from year to year. If something does spectacularly well one year there is no guarantee it will repeat the next year. Every year one plant seems to do extremely well for me. This year it was the basjoo bananas. It’s a Japanese bananas that is hardy to zone 5. The May/June drought ended in Philadelphia with a 5” rain storm. They loved it and exploded into growth. No idea what they will do this year. I was cutting them down the other day to throw into the compost pile and realized they were still very much alive in the core. Left the trunk half cut down to see if it will make it through the rest of the winter. I have no luck with dahlias. Can’t even winter the tubers over. This year I am trying leaving the tubers I have in the pot in a cold room in the basement. If it survives I will try to make cuttings from the eye of the tuber. I saw a professional dahlia grower on Gardeners’ World say he got the biggest flowers with the best color doing tuber cutting. That will be my experiment this year.

Oh wow! I wonder if I could gamble with a zone 5 banana in 4? 😂

I live on the hillside of the Schuylkill River. The yard is cut into a hill. The bananas sit in a micro climate against a 12’ high wall facing south. You would need to plant it in a shelter area then mulch it heavily for the winter. One reason it does so well is I don’t care about it any more. As soon as I lose interest in a plant it does phenomenally well. If I am really interested in a plant and baby it, it dies if I look at it sideways.

I grew dahlias from tubers once many, many years ago and still remember how exquisite they were. I'm getting back to gardening again after a long time and ordered the Bee's Choice seed mix from Floret's this week. It will be fun to see what comes up! I love your passion, Nicole! Looking through the dahlia photos in catalogs and online makes me nervous. I can see myself getting obsessed with these! :-)
