Okra...I grew up down south where okra grows no problem. After moving to zone 3 I have to start my okra inside. It needs heat to germinate. Your greenhouse may be the ticket too. The best success I have is growing it in a hot house/greenhouse. I have to have okra, so go to great lengths to make it happy and hot. It's the best any way you eat it! Good luck!

I may have gotten a little too excited about growing season. $$$ I just seeded my Majorette Double Champagne Hollyhocks today. Hopefully they will be big enough to sell at market by first weekend in May. Meanwhile... my husband is busy converting my walk-in cooler to my new temperature controlled germination chamber. Brilliant to see you getting back into your veggie growing plans. I like to try something new every year. Last year it was cucamelons they are sooooo cute and quite a tasty little snack and they pickle so well. This year, baby sweetcorn. The squirrels always eat my proper corn cobs if I don't fight them off and I'm hoping the little fluffy tailed munchers can't be assed with the baby corn if I grow some big ones nearby. Trying to time this later in the year with Pak choy and chilli ripening. 🌶 Spicy stir fry and noodles 😋 yum!

Clemson spineless okra is the only variety I grow. Pick it young when it’s tender though, or it will get fibrous. This past growing season was my husband’s first experience with it. He was thoroughly impressed with the amount of harvest, and the height of the plant. The more you cut, the more it seems to grow! This year will be my first year of cut flowers, so I’m excited to learn from trial and error 😆 Happy gardening everyone!

Also, taking your lead, Bright Lights , Fizzy Rose, and Black Magic Cosmos. Also Chocolate Cherry Sunflower that is on BC's catalog cover page. (Love them sunflowers!) Ajvarski Pepper will be grown again this year as they are the prettiest red pepper that are sweet and great for roasting. And finally, in my SWFL garden growing now are San Marzano and Amish Paste tomatoes, just beginning to ripen. All are new to me (except Ajavarski) to grow this year. Gardening is such fun!

I grew coleus from seeds last year. They were super slow at first and then suddenly grew like crazy and I ended up with so many plants in many beautiful colors and patterns that I could put them everywhere in the garden. They also stay nice in a vase for a very long time and grow roots very soon. The only concern: they are the slugs' favorite meal right after basil and dahlia seedlings.

In regards to trying to put plastic on the old frames, you can make “clips” to hold the plastic on the metal frame using pieces of pvc about 2-3” long and cut a slit down them long ways :) then you can put the plastic over the frame and clip on top :)

I'm most excited about growing our 3rd and last baby. Due in June and we decided not to do much of a garden this year so I can spend the summer snuggling with baby and enjoying the newborn stage. We will still get asparagus, rhubarb, strawberries, onions, garlic and potatoes as they are already planted in the garden from fall.

Hi Nicole, Talking of “removing heat:” Heat and cold/cool is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is related to the balance of yin-yang chi (energy) in our bodies. Foods have properties that can help to maintain this balance. Imbalances trigger illnesses. You can find out more online. East Asians, like Chinese and Koreans, are obsessed with heat and cold in our foods; which are reflected in our cuisines. Btw, Chinese celery has a pungent smell, used mainly in soups and garnishes. Good luck in trying our all your seeds. Oh before I forget, your growing season may not be long enough to grow bananas, but they are great as ornamental plants. Love your channel and your videos. Keep them coming.

I think I have perfected the loofa/luffa after 3 years of almosts. I had about 4 plants last year that had huge luffa gourds that were drying when the first hard frost hit. I left them out there, but they didn't really dry properly after the plants died. I got 3 luffa "sponges" and had enough to give as Christmas gifts, but I WANT MORE! The flowers are gorgeous and still blooming very late into the season. The pollinators loved them and the vines covered my ugly chain link fence. Win, win, win!

I grow new pepper varieties every year...this year I'll be trying a Pepperoncini, Sugar Rush peach, Ozark Giant sweet pepper and a Red Ember cayenne. Great seed haul. I focus primarily on flowers, but I do enjoy growing a variety of lettuces, radishes, cucumbers, etc. Last growing season, I found a seed company somewhat close to you in Rochester, NY that sold bulk quantities of flower and veggie seeds. Great variety of flowers and veggies and much larger quantities than what I could find from most online companies. I decided to go ahead and buy in bulk so I wouldn't have to buy any seeds for a few years. What in the world I thought I would do with 250-1000 seeds of each variety I don't know, but I figured I would be set to never order seeds again. Ha! I think I ordered as much or more from them again this year. I must grow all the varieties!

White Tomesol is very very good. I got a free packet from Baker Creek last year and honestly it was one I never would have chosen myself. I don't even know why I grew it. It's not like I had room. It was wonderful!!! It's one of my favorites now.

Nice seed haul, Nicole. Regarding the echinacea….if you have groundhogs, put some protective fencing or something around them. They love echinacea. They have eaten mine to the ground the last 2 years. It’s all out war this year!

I'm excited to start a winter sowing project. I'm not a big seed starter but watched a couple videos with the water jug method and thought why not. I'm in Maine in zone 5B. I'm just doing a few Poppies and Coneflowers. I have only done a few small tomatoes and peppers on the deck. I'm more of an ornamental gardener. If I had more sun space I would definitely do more veggies.

I am growing two new varieties of peas this year. They are podded up now and should be ready by February. I also have broccoli, lettuce and spinach. For the summer, Zucchini and yellow squash, green beans and 5 varieties of tomatoes. I've grown nadapenos before and they were great! We grew balsam and they were just too weird to do anything with. They also have exploding seed pods and are hard to get rid of. Good luck on your seed starting! I'm so excited for planting season to get here.

I grew Balsam last year in my long border and really enjoyed them. Coleus took a long time to get to a decent size to plant out for me as did petunias for some reason. I tried two years in a row and finally got decent size plants by mid summer when I was hoping to have larger plants earlier in the season. I’m scaling back my tomatoes this year so I can grow more types of vegetables in my raised beds.I suggest growing the spoon tomato where you walk by often so you can snack on them because it’s a nightmare to harvest. Lol

Hey Nicole, I used to live in Thailand, they use snake beans there a lot, but the eat it mostly raw, either in green papaya salad or just as side veggies for spicy stuff, like chicken laarb salad. The texture is crunchier and a bit tougher than regular green beans. The small eggplants I've seen used in curries, especially green curry, they keep their texture and bite, so would probably work in stir fries too. Job's tears I've eaten there in salads, when you cook it, it's a bit like pearl barley but sweeter 😊

Watch out for the peppermint stick balsam!! I grew it last year and mine went to seed and their were hundreds of little seed pods that explode when you touch them! Really cool but i think this year I will have hundreds of volunteer balsam haha

My son needs gluten free and I read that Job's Tears makes a good GF replacement for barley in beef barley soup; however, I could never find it locally to try. I never thought that maybe I could grow it! I so wanted the Astra Rose Sunflower but I resisted since I had ordered so many other seeds. However if I going to order the Job's Tears, I might as well fill the package. Those melons sound delicious...

I did baker creek’s orange jing okra and omg it is so good and is beautiful. Lots of peas, beans, long beans, greens, pineapple squash, lots of varieties of tomatoes (I had a whole section of black and purple veggies), I’ll do the purple marasaka (I think) pepper….delicious pepper jelly. Oh, and doing amaranth again - you can actually eat the seeds like tiny popcorn and use the plant to dye wool.

I did the Yod Fah broccoli last year, it was so delicious and kept on giving all summer. Also, I grow Martino's Roma every year, and it's so prolific. I grew Abe Lincoln last year also, and let me tell you, it was not only huge, it was my best tasting out of 40 varieties, that I grow. Good Luck

Like to watch your seed hauls! It gives me ideas for ones I haven't tried! I know you are very busy but it would be nice to have you do those halapeno popper recipe or a rutabaga one to share how you make them. Guardian Answer does that on occasion and its fun to see how someone else cooks things! Love Baker Creek. I too am trying those super duper echinaceas. Cant wait!
