This show epitomises what, IMHO, could (and should?) be added for next year race reviews - teams grading. I feel in 2022 so much focus was put on Ferrari's blunders, that some other really poor performances were swept under the rug. Merc missing some points due to poor strat calls? McLaren's sliding to 5th? Alfa choking for half of the season? Mick getting an awful wrong side of the stick from Haas? This could add extra layer - and moar ABCDEF1 fun

@@DavidGarcia-oi5nt Man, are you asking me or WTF1 Team? 🤨 I think these guys, esp. Tommy, have slammed Mick often enough, esp. when he honestly deserved it. Also I've never said that he ain't to blame, i did not shed a tear when he got the boot (albeit would prefer a new young driver instead of Hulk). But beside his blunders and/or his quali performance, he also quite regularly got poor strategy planned for him. But still Steiner and Haas are these cool boyos, despite some signals showing that the atmosphere in that team might be caustic sometimes. So... what are you talking about then...?

But the reason Masi became the scapegoat was *specifically* the fact that the journalists and the fans (and Mercedes and their 'protests' also had a hand in that) made him into one. Last season was marred with issues and dodgy stewarding, yet everyone concentrated only on the Abu Dhabi drama. This sent the signal to the FIA that only this is the problem - so they did what everyone asked for. Exactly that, and just that. It is no surprise nothing has changed.

@@ehrlichgesagt863 Monaco was a case of Sergio going for a risky strategy and Sainz realizing it late and both of them jumping Leclerc, Max made the safe call but still jumped Leclerc. Sergio had just lost Spain at that point due to team orders and then backing off. It was early in the season and Checo thought he could be a factor himself in the title. 13:16 Thank you, Matt. The FIA was able to use Masi as a scapegoat because of how dramatic last season was and particularly the finale. I’d still say Masi was pressured to get the race running again by the FIA/Liberty, because they didn’t want the most action packed season they’d had in almost 10 years to finish under the SC. This season, when the FIA started focussing on jewellery instead of consistent penalties and safe recovery of vehicles, I knew that this season was going to be the same.

Let's talk about track limits. I wish FIA would focus on letting the track penalize the drivers for exceeding the track dimensions instead of trying to officiate it where it can be missed or it becomes a judgment call. They could examine the corners that cause the most headaches and make changes to the curbing, runoffs, etc so that if your car goes over the white line, you lose time or damaged car. For example, the Brazil GP corner that Max pushed Lewis wide defending in 21', they could take a power driver to the asphalt runoff at the exit so if Max would've gone wide like that he'd be in grass or Gravel. Obviously, safety is a concern so you'd want to leave the asphalt runoff in the entry part of that corner. That's what Spa did at the Hairpin and it seemed to work great.

I think the moment with max and Hamilton, was just a champion type defense as both of them are champs and multi champs and neither one likes leaving space with each other so little bad blood but I like them driving each other hard. I hope at least three teams next year are fighting for a title. Moments like that will be crazy with me ppl fighting for a title.

Most exciting part of the season was 100% after Monaco. Everyone kept talking about how it brought Perez into contention for the championship and how Leclerc was still in it if Ferrari could stop making mistakes. People actually thought we were going to have a 3 way title fight for like one day.

Regardig Ferrari, they only had the 1 lap pace but in the race, RB destroyed everyone. That being said, it could have gone down to Brazil maybe if Ferrari would have been a more composed team.

I only want to ask how was this not more dominant than anything from Lewis? More from a car perspective than driver. We never saw the Mercs with an ability to win from P15 without chaos, and heck not in back to back races for fun. People seem to forget that. Most of Lewis' "30 second" wins were people behind him pitting for FL. And even at the start, Max won most races he finished, the engine issues only masked the car's true performance a bit.

Brazil 21. Also, I feel like there were a lot of mistakes by Ferrari at the beginning of the year that made the RBs look better. Obviously, RBs were the superior car in the second half, even tho Checo could never achieve the same results as Max. Very rarely they were 1-2

Because the races were somewhat competive, even if max took the win at the end of the day. Ferrari was usually right behind for 90% of the race until the tyres fell off a cliff. The difference in lap was usually a couple of tenths Merc dominance was a 30 second plus gap by lap 15, meaning the only way nyone could get infront was SC or merc DNF

@@nikhilpaleti3872 If you feel that Max was more dominant than Lewis ever was, keep in mind that Max had a ~70% winrate this season. Mercedes from 2014 till 2020 had a 75% winrate with around 35% 1-2s. Let that sink in. Mercedes was as dominant over 8! seasons on average with three of those seasons winning all but 2 or 3 races in 2014, 2015 and 2016. In 2016 they only lost Spain because Lewis and Nico crashed, that car would have won. In Maleisia they only lost because Lewis had a rare DNF. The 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2020 Merc were easily more dominant than the 2022 RB.

@@suckieduckie Exactly! Mercedes, as a constructor, had a win-rate of 73%, having 2 hyper-competent drivers for 3 Years, and one year of Ferrari being nerfed because of cheating. Max alone has a win rate of 69% this season, despite 2 DNFs, and RedBull 77%, once again, despite 2 DNFs. Mercedes as a whole had 2016, especially, but there still was a title battle, the conversation was about the entire package.

I don't know if this has been covered or not, but regarding the FIA blunders, especially about last year final race. Could it be that Michael Massi may have been pushed by Formula One management to apply the rules, but take some liberties from the rules to make sure the show is top notch. Liberty being a media company, what they may want is a great show more than a fair sport. I am no saying it is, but I wonder

The New regulations worked in terms of how close the cars can race. However, it is evident that we still need DRS for most overtaking to take place, unless a Redbull, a Ferrari or a Mercedes found itself behind a slower car like Williams, Alpha Tauri etc. Also, I dont know if it was the big difference in performance that led to very few interesting battles. There were several races where we just sat there hoping for a safty car to come out and bring the cars close together for some interesting racing to take place, even if it would last for 2 laps and we are back to the huge time gaps between the cars. If Ferrari did not make their questionable stategy calls maybe we would have seen more battles at the front in the first half of the season. In the second half they looked slower compared to Rebull even without poor strategy. With that said, it was just the first year of new regulations. I believe the teams have collected enough data, observed what others did better. Hopefully 2023 will have more intesting races and closer interesting battles.

As a total novice, I am left wondering what exactly the function and role of the FIA is supposed to be, given their abysmal and dangerous track record. I honestly feel F1 has the resources to go it alone without them and the sport would be better for it, but what do I know? Lol

To be fair in Japan it wasn't really the FIA's fault. In the end the rule is elaborated in the rule book and although it's arguable about how small and where this rule is written all teams have to read the whole book and have to know every part of it. Sure the rule may be put somewhere more obvious and imminent to see but still. I just felt like Japan was a mistake by the media not the FIA.

I really hate the argument of "Charles needs to be more cut-throat with Ferrari strategies, he needs to be a strategist as well". 90% of the time Max and Lewis are going to listen to their teams as well. They just have competent people behind them. Can remember a few radio calls this year, Abu Dhabi most recently, where Hamilton trusted the team and then told them afterwards they were wrong. Max has as well, Singapore quali for example. It's likely Charles even has disagreed with strategies before but we dont get all the radio broadcasts! Charles should not be required to be a strategist. He is employed to drive and win. If he can help the strategy department then great but it is not a job requirement. Ferrari just need a new strategy team PRONTO and then this silly requirement will go away.

Max on Leclerc first corner of Suzuka, that was MIGHTY. very calculated wet racing line and positioning. That was the best overtake. So much uncertainty on the amount of grip and the conditions. Leclerc on Hamilton at Copse? come on, that was a carbon copy of last year, it's just that Hamilton hit the apex as well as two, didn't want to take out another car, or else he'll be viewed as a villain. Leclerc probably knew Hamilton will back off, so not much of a surprise for me.

It wouldn't help if your strategy team is bad and even if you're good at making calls. If the other driver is Verstappen who is somewhat aware of strategy, and insanely quick and adaptable as a driver, you have to be far better than him and have a far better car for strategy to not matter. Verstappen doesn't have to think about the calls because Hannah was good.
