**Note: there are a couple editing mistakes on the first Half of the video showing the wrong scene. Sorry if it causes some confusion!
4-Day Fall Solo in Nopiming Provincial Park. My trip started by getting dropped off at the road washout on road 314 where I put-in on the Manigotagan River and paddled to Gem Lake. There are 5 portages on the way, other than some low water it was a relatively straightforward journey.
On my last day I will take the portage off Gem to a vehicle staging area where I will be picked up.
There were lots of birds on the way, and I even managed to harvest a grouse!
There are 5 designated campsites on Gem Lake. You will not find a canoe route map for Gem Lake on the parks website, but they are listed on a table of all the areas:
www.gov.mb.ca/...
I also use paddleplanner.com to plan my routes. Even if you do not pay a subscription you can view the portage and campsite information.à

Thanks for making the video. (It’s greatly appreciated when new marking tape is added to the start/end of portages ). Looking forward to your next video.

Wonderful! I didn't realize you were from niverville--you're literally my backdoor neighbor! I've wanted to do Gem lake for a bit now. Hopefully the kayak is ready by next spring! Neat to see a fellow adventurer!

Majority of the trails in Nopiming are old winter roads for hauling out wood. The others would be mining. Snowmobile trails would never cross at that spot. Cliffs and moving water are not an ideal spot for ice crossings. The snomads northern trail crosses 314 just north of Cat lake at the trans-license road. No trails north of that in the park. Used to put up/take down the trail signs. Father fell in at Cat creek one year. Had him take off his wet bibs and his pants and put on my dry bibs. Cold ride home in my jeans. lol They would have placed a temporary bridge in place to haul out the timber. Nothing better than fall time with the forest colors, white meat of a ruffed grouse and no bugs.

Good job! There's something about camping in the fall that I just can't get enough of.... especially if the fishing is hot! Pretty sweet you got some chicken action! I take it you were more about the hunting this trip and not the fishing? Thanks for posting!

Thanks for watching. It’s harder to find the fish in the fall and I just haven’t put the time and effort in to find them. With the short days it’s tough, easier to get grouse!

Good to know about the washout! wish I'd known about it earlier last year though.. Has it been fixed for this year? Updated my portages and hoping you scouted out the rest of the campsites on Gem Lake! cheers on the grouse!

Apparently there is supposed to be a temporary bridge while they construct the new one. Not sure on the current status. I checked out 2-3 other sites, should have some footage in the next videos. Thanks for watching!

Just came back from 12 days on Garner lake. Floating bridge has been in use for a month now. Kept a boat on Gem for many years and would hike in from the road with a 2 hp johnson on our shoulder. Still remember fishing Gem thinking your all alone when a huge motorboat speeds by to pick up more kids for the camp on the end of the lake. lol Always great fishing.

Seeing that you've been doing solo, have you resorted to using a kayak paddle yet? I personally am a big fan of this method (more room for error), though I know the canoe purists would scoff!

Also, you should check out the route in Turtle Mountain PP. Even though I live in the Peg, that place is my go-to. However, I recommend wearing waders because you may have to go through some water to get to the portages for a little distance in low water.

I have started using a kayak paddle, game changer in strong currents, wind and larger lake crossings. I was hesitant at first but with a traditional paddle it’s a good addition for longer canoe trips. Can’t beat a traditional paddle for winding rivers, shallow rocky/muddy stretches.
