I wish! The spray isn’t legal but Permethrin treated clothing is, not much options for clothing and they are pricey.

Camped at that spot about 25 years ago. Friend had a boat stashed there that I borrowed and at Bird we had a 12' tinner on a homemade trailer that weighed nothing for the quad to pull and a 2hp johnson kicker. Would use it to fish Osis, Birse, Kingston, Maryjane and Ryerson. Lucky back in the day the local logging roads were all still passable. Funny thing is I told my 3 friends I took in there it was a remote location and we didn't see anyone the first day. Second day a huge 17 foot boat with what must have been 8 people roars by. I didn't mention the youth wilderness camp on the lake. lol

I've never used a separate GPS unit (apart from my İnReach, which I don't use for navigation or tracking) as I use Gaia GPS app on my phone and it serves both of those functions. Is a good app and free if you want to look into it. One less device that needs to be charged/can potentially fail. Though I suppose you are doubly screwed if you lose your phone!

Another great segment! Thanks so much. Ugh those ticks. What a nuisance. When I did Caddy to Bernard I ran into the same issue trying to find a site on Sailing the first night. There were sites marked on map that just didn't seem to exist. I ended up stealth camping on that sand beach at the far end. It was not ideal but it was past sunset so what can you do? Incidentally there were a few tents on that island where you ended up so I'm sure it must be used pretty regularly! If I NEED to camp at a non designated site I just don't have a fire and otherwise leave no trace of course (as with any other site). I figure no fire no foul? 🤷🏻♀️
@ManitobanOutdoors2 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching!! Glad I wasn’t the only one having an issue! I have stealth camped in other places as well, when it’s late there isn’t much you can do. I think it’s fine for those of us who don’t have fires, cut any wood etc… especially in the high traffic areas where it’s a guess of sites are going to be available. Have a good season, hope you get out!!

@@ManitobanOutdoors thanks! I finally did Rabbit River last weekend, was great! İt's generally too low to manage in my kayak but it was just fine at this time of year. As for the sites, it was a good reminder not to count on a site being there just because it's marked on a map! I'm generally okay if I can't find a proper site as a hammock camp so really all I need is two trees 😂

I paddled last year June 3-6 through Big Whiteshell loop through crowduck and around to mallard falls and back to little whiteshell to Big Whiteshell. The ticks were the worst I ever experienced. Like you min. 50 ticks one way on a portage… to top it off we got poison ivy as Indian lake is just full of it, no going around it, poison ivy everywhere. Was a fun trip though but I’ll stick to more north eastern routes as the topography is less grass and mud like the whiteshell has. Great video, I wanted to do that route for quite some time but now think I’m good lol. Have a great 2024 paddle season, can’t wait to see where you go next

Regarding bear hang, agreed there are very few trees around here that work for it. İ have an Ursack now and it's great. Have you looked into those at all? Similar idea to a bear canister but much much lighter and they just roll up to put in your pack.
@ManitobanOutdoors4 ай бұрын
I have looked into it, but I like to keep my kitchen gear, toothpaste, sometimes fishing gear etc all together so it needs a bigger bag. That said I may give it a try one year and separate the food, would make it a lot easier to hang!

The ticks in MB were just hideous last spring. İ did a 4 day hiking trip in Riding Mountain and must have picked at least 400 off. Fingers crossed they are better this year!

So happy you did this trip! İ was planning to do the same loop last Sept (though clockwise). Didn't end up with enough time so i only did Caddy to Bernard but I'd still love the do the whole loop and this is VERY helpful for planning. Thank you so much!! Also lovely pickeral on the first day! And i think I'd need to walk my kayak through that tiny tunnel from Nora? My plan for that looong portage was to stash my kayak cart at the Nora end prior to starting the trip. 3km is about 2km too far for me lol (though i do single carry).
@ManitobanOutdoors4 ай бұрын
Glad this helps, working on the next part of the video. You can totally walk that tunnel, assuming the water isn’t too high or fast. In retrospect I should have just dropped my bags at the tunnel, loaded the canoe and walked it. Good call on the kayak cart, that would be a long haul with a kayak, unless you lucked out and “Bob” gave you a lift 😂
@lolobeans4 ай бұрын

This comment made me laugh. I watch @manitobanoutdoors because his videos aren’t over-saturated with music. Very laid back, natural soundtrack almost all the time. The intro music in this video doesn’t match the feel of the rest of the video. Skip it and the rest is a good go.
