Bailey, I appreciate the dedication to ideological consistency. I'm really glad that you took the time to go through players' baggage and how you categorized the PED players around 28:45; it was really helpful to see those lines physically drawn out. The "steroid tax" is something I've been trying to articulate for a bit but could never find the wording as succinctly. Some of my experiences since last ballot have really led me to see Barry Bonds as someone who should be in the Hall of Fame (though I didn't know about the domestic violence allegations). The argument is usually that he's one of the best of all time, but the steroids diminish those accomplishments. I have taken to framing it the other way: yes, steroids are bad, but he's still one of the best with a bat ever. It's like being able to say the 2017 Astros were still really good despite the cheating that went on. I suppose the "steroid tax" argument should be fleshed out to Clemens, too, which isn't something I had considered before today. Another great video.
@WatersonBill3 жыл бұрын
Great video, as always. One minor disagreement about Ortiz and Sosa: the vast majority of Sosa's production came during years when there was not rigorous testing and after testing became routine, he dropped off and retired. Ortiz showed up on the NYT list for 2003, but had a long and productive career well into the 2010s. I think it's easy to argue that we *know* Ortiz was a HOF-worthy hitter without PEDs, but we can't say that for certain about Sosa. Additionally, Ortiz's performances in the post season are so important to baseball history.
@FoolishBailey3 жыл бұрын
I get where you're coming from, but I personally don't play that game. It's too easy to retrofit career trajectories to rumors like this. You wouldn't suspect Sosa or Ortiz just looking at the numbers alone, but now that you know the leaked test exists, you go ahead and make some pretty strong assumptions. I don't like to make those assumptions.
@swadizzy3 жыл бұрын
I was going to comment almost exactly the same thing
@WatersonBill3 жыл бұрын
@@FoolishBailey I appreciate the thoughtful reply! I guess where I'm coming from isn't actually making an assumption on guilt re: the 2003 test, but instead saying "what's the case for each player if that is IS indicative of impactful PED use and what's the case if it ISN'T." Even in the harshest reading of the NYT list, I think the implications have to be retrospective, i.e. reflecting only on performance up to that date. The part of Sosa's career that would be affected includes his best years by far. Whereas with Ortiz, it's a small portion of good years. Personally, I'm with you on the "tax" so to speak for suspected use. I guess just to me there's a heavier tax on Sosa's career then Ortiz's. Thanks again for all the great content!

I think the disparity between Ortiz and the other PED users is the timing relative to his career. Ortiz’s incident happened in 2003 and nothing occurred afterward. 2003 was really the start of the elite part of his career and he had 13 seasons from 2004-2016 where he was not only at his best and according to our current information, clean as well. I think that has to be taken into consideration. All allegations of cheating occurred before he became a “hall of fame caliber player”. That’s the separation between Sosa and Ortiz. Sosa’s PED stuff confirmed his past. Ortiz’s PED stuff is independent from his future
@Compucles3 жыл бұрын
But cheating is cheating irregardless of whether they actually needed to do so. To truly be consistent, you need to treat all the cheaters the same way. While that's not truly possible as long as guys like Gaylord Perry (an admitted illegal spitballer) are in the Hall, we should at least be consistent with the modern candidates, whether you want to keep them all out or just completely ignore the character clause.

That’s exactly what my dad has always said. Bonds was just really annoyed that people were talking about McGwire and Sosa and not him in 1998 even though he was naturally the better player, so he started taking PEDs. But if you ace your whole career but then totally cheat your Thesis you ain't getting that Masters degree no matter what, same should be said for the HOF. Just because you didn't have to cheat to be great doesn't give you a pass for cheating... it actually may be worse. Also I hear that arguments that steroids doesn't hurt anyone but the person taking them. For anyone wanting to play professional at that time they had to make a choice. Either just use natural talent which should have been good enough or take steroids that could ruin their health permanently in order to stay on par with your competitors. Bonds didn't have to make that choice to be a pro. But countless others did because of him and others who previously made that choice.

Chalk down yearly hall of fame ballot/Foolish 50 as my new reasons to live Also my ballot would be the same other than having Buehrle and Abreu over Sosa and Ortiz. Bailey, you just never miss. I think one thing I’d note though, and it’s obviously pretty subjective and favors some guys a lot more just because of market size(s) of the team(s) they played for, is how much actual name recognition they have and how much of an impact they made on the watchability of the league during their time. Sosa doesn’t have an insaaaane case statistically, with well below average WAR/JAWS/WAR per 162 and a very nice but not mindblowing 128 OPS+ (albeit really nice counting stats, I mean you can’t just ignore the 609 career HRs), buuut he was one of the faces of baseball during the turn of the century years and his home run race with Mark McGuire was just peak television and news. He helped define an era of baseball and I’d think it’s hard to say the name Sammy Sosa to even a casual baseball fan and they not know at all who you’re talking about. He also spent basically his entire career in Chicago, one of the biggest markets. Essentially what I’m saying is there should be a bit of an actual FAME clause to the hall of fame. While we can and should tax known PED users and even tax certain baggage, I think we can also provide a fame credit as well. Some players are spectacular and deserving of the hall based on performance merit alone, but I think it’s fair to separate two players who might both be very comparable statistically if one simply played a much more defining role in the growth and image of baseball

Another issue I think voters may have with Sosa is that his name is synonymous with all the major steroid users of the 90's because he was performing at their same level. Anything hitting related coming out of the National League was Bonds, McGuire, and Sosa. It's possible Sosa was just that good, and he's being marred by the era he played in, but I think a lot of voters will just assume he somehow got away with it.

Re: Sosa. I was gobsmacked at Sosa hit 600+ home runs and had less than 60 WAR? Then I noted how many doubles he had. Did the guy just never hustle out of the box?

Idc what your personal opinion about Barry bonds is, how is the all time home run leader not in the hall of fame? How do you tell the story of baseball without him? That’s like if Kareem wasn’t a hall of famer even tho he has the most points ever

Jake Peavy is the Padres all time pitching WAR leader. Bailey “not a serious candidate for me”. Imma go cry now

wow, i just liked and subbed because you actually had the basic human decency to vote for Sosa, who is easily one of the greatest players of my life time. I love that you point out how unfairly he's been treated with regards to his baseball legacy. please, everyone (especially the cubs) lets all just be nicer to Sammy Sosa

Thanks for the awesome analysis! Personally, I would have voted for Kent and Abreu over Rodriguez and Nathan, but I honestly think those decisions are splitting hairs at this point.

The very slight case one could make that could justify voting for Bonds but not Clemens is that Bonds was peerless while Clemens had peers like Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson, and Greg Maddux. For instance, there's an MLB video about former MLBers discussing the best hitter they saw, and everyone said Bonds, but in a related video, Clemens wasn't even mentioned.

Your point about the gray area PED guys vs definite broke the rules is interesting. Alex served his suspension (even if it was in my opinion done to make him an example) As for character clause. I've heard ty cobb wasn't the most savory guy. I'm 🇩🇴, and the whole "sammy bleached his skin" thing is mostly humorous. It DOES highlight the complex topic of race over there, but it's not this thing he's shunned for, at least not to me.

I’m revisiting this now and I’m really sad to see that Joe Nathan didn’t crack 5%. This guy was consistently one of the best relievers in the league, like top 3 consistently in his prime. Even Papelbon getting just one percent just shows how much relievers are undervalued

Does Joe Mauer not count @ 25:15? Played 60% of his career games at catcher and got 2123 hits. Are you only counting hits accrued as a catcher?
@FoolishBailey3 жыл бұрын
You forgot to count his DH games. It's just under 50% for Games Started.
@wellitseli3 жыл бұрын
@@FoolishBailey Ahh okay, my bad. The Standard Fielding section on b-ref is a little misleading and shows 885/1470, but the 304 games at DH are just not included in the 1470. 49.89% it is.

Schilling didnt really even make a video game he had paid for the liscense for that game to make into an mmo. He was the one that got the game released but no of his employees were involved in the devlopement on that game. He also screwed over all those employees not paying for peoples contractoral moving fees so them getting hit with the bill years later.

Think not selecting Shilling was a cop out. Especially following it with selecting Jones. They are both in for me though. Couldn’t agree more with you on Sosa and the logic you’ve used when it comes to PED’s. Great video really enjoyed it.
