World Series 2001 vs World Series 2016. Mariano Rivera vs Aroldis Chapman. In this episode of Baseball Bits, we explore two radically different ninth innings from two phenomenal closing pitchers. One pitches well, but still is saddled with a World Series blown save. The other struggles, but live to tell the tale.
We learn about the brief, but impactful Aroldis Chapman Cubs days. He didn't get much action in Chicago, but ended up taking home a ring and ending the curse. Meanwhile, A Mariano Rivera postseason is something we take for granted. He dominated, just not in 2001 vs the Arizona Diamondbacks. Either way, a World Series 9th inning is truly something to behold.

Rest of the world all plays the same game that while entertaining has limited valuable skills. Ever consider that sports with a wide variety of athletic skills required is better than being good at one thing while the rest are worthless. Who gives a shit about arm strength and developing strong muscles in the whole body when it’s a game 90% focused on legs. watching inning 9 of 2016 still gives me anxiety. i feel like the mental factor of facing off against chapman had to have played a factor with how he got away with so many of those sliders. everyone must have been anticipating him to turn up and throw 103 in that situation, despite him being as overworked as he was.

Even as overworked as he was he was still throwing 98. As much as throwing 103 is more intimidating, 98 is still no joke and much harder than most guys throw even in the modern game where every pitcher’s throwing as hard as they physically can every time out.

It’s the fact that even if he’s overworked, he’s gonna work one in at 98 or 99 so you still have to keep a look out. Considering how many hangers he was throwing I was surprised he didn’t throw more fastballs and I’m sure Cleveland’s hitters were thinking the same.

Fun fact: Enrique Wilson scheduled a flight home to the DR in the event of a Yankees world series parade. After they lost, he booked a flight to return home a few days earlier. That flight he was originally scheduled to take, had the Yankees won, crashed and had no survivors. So one could say that Mariano Rivera got credited with a save after that game.

Watching that Chapman 9th inning was the most terrifying sports moment I had ever experienced and will ever experience. I felt my heart stop every single time he floated a hanging slider up there. And they just kept not quite squaring it up. If you needed any indication that things were finally going to fall the Cubs way, that 9th inning was it.

As a die hard cubs fan watching that World Series game seven almost gave me a heart attack and you could tell Chapman was fatigued and should not have kept playing he left that slider hanging over the plate to raji Davis and he punished him for it. And we still won the game.

Joe did not manage that game well. Thank God the Cubs the won regardless. I love Joe Maddon for helping us win a world series but in that particular game he made a couple bone headed decisions when it came to pitching.

2001 Game 7 was one of the best finishes to one of the best World Series ever that didn't need to be that close in the first place. AZ should have won it in at most 6 games and maybe even in 5. Some how they managed to nearly lose it despite being the better team by quite a bit. Kim made the series interesting all by himself until Rivera made it interesting in game 7.

Ok quick rant on the Luis Gonzalez steroid thing, I don't really buy that he used steroids, he never appeared on any lists, never skipped out on a random test, and the only real evidence is in the form of his stats, and even then it almost makes sense considering how he was a former top prospect but wasn't a full time starter until he reached Arizona. Anyways I'm probably wrong and way too trusting but that's my quick little rant about Gonzo's alleged steroid use.

Paul WT Ok let's take a look at it In 2001 Gonzo has a war of 7.9, his career high to that point was in 1999 when he had a war of 6.4 (both per baseball reference), that kind of jump doesn't indicate steroid use. And if you look deeper at his stats it doesn't seem that crazy, during his time in Arizona Gonzalez was a player who usually hit around 25-30 homeruns and 40-45 doubles a season. In 2001 yes his homeruns spiked but his doubles dipped, add into that just how much of a hitters year 2001 was (bonds used steroids the entire second half of his career and never approached his hr totals from 2001) and it's not that out of place for a good hitter like Gonzalez to have a year like he did, where the balls were flying farther and he hit more homeruns that would've been doubles. Also there's the Brady Anderson argument being that if he did roid up in 2001 and have that great of a season, why didn't he use roids again? 2001 was his age 33 season so you would think he would keep using roids and launching homeruns for at least a couple more years but in the seasons after 2001 Gonzalez returned to what he averaged in Arizona before 2001. Like I said maybe I'm too trusting but his 2001 season isn't much of statistical outlier to me.

@@aqgpandemic5406 There is also the fact that Chase Field is the second highest elevation ballpark in the country behind Coors Field. Also, Phoenix, Arizona has virtually no humidity for a majority of the summer (recently they added humidors to level the playing field) so baseballs carry much further. Many hits that are one-hops to the wall (common doubles) in other ballparks will go over the fence at Chase Field.
