Nice review Tony. I just wish Honda would bring out another shaft drive bike. Since the vfr1200 / cross tourer they haven't brought one out....as you say its more practical for touring. Personally at nearly £13k I would look at a used BMW / Triumph which come with all the extras and 2yrs warranty.....and no chain 😎. Ride safe and keep up the great videos.

I went from a shaft drive to a chain, and it’s no big deal really. On tour I carry a can of chain lube and some rubber gloves & oil it every 500 mile approx. It takes all of 5 mins and you are back on the road, no problem. The bike has now done 16000 miles and I have only adjusted the chain twice at home.
@kannermw
@kannermw 2 жыл бұрын
@@marksimpson5218 The chain lubing is not the problem. It is cleaning the fling from the chain that is constant pia unless you don't care what your bike looks like. I use a PTFE based lube and I never need to clean chain except wipe side plates off. A good lube will protect the seals and outside of rollers by lubricating them and capturing fine debris that will in turn be flung off. Give me a minimal maintenance-free shaft drive that doesn't make mess or require costly replacement of chain plus sprockets at 20K-30K miles

I'm glad you pointed out the fact the bike goes before the screen boots up. I have an Africa Twin, and honestly, I typically start my bike while I'm still fiddling with my gloves and/or other stuff, and I've never been ready to pull off by the time it boots up. But even when i have everything ready to go, you don't have to wait for the screen, which is exactly what happens when you don't have a screen on your bike. The screen also has different setting, and you can set it to very simple (non-confusing) set-ups. I love the electronics on my Africa Twin. I admit, that it took me two weeks to get comfortable, and two months for it to become second nature, but hey, i've had her for two years now. If my next bike is an NT1100, it will be because i want the screen.

Nice review and I think fair in the context of todays expectations. But they're calling this a tourer. Lets be honest it's a styling exercise on an Africa Twin. Even if you go back the best part of 20 years there were better tourers - the FJR, Pan Euro and R1200RT to name just a few. Electric screens, shaft drive and large fairings/luggage make a big difference when you want to use it as a tourer. Its a shame you didn't get to try it out in the rain to see how good/otherwise that fairing set up really is. I know from experience that on the R bike if you're over about 40mph you don't get wet at all - including boots. Its also got adjustable seat height, much larger luggage (and a top box) and I would wager the ride is far more plush after watching you get jolted on all the big bumps. I think this is a bit of a cynical marketing exercise to sell cheap-to-build bikes using Hondas' name. It used to be you built a bike to be the best you could make it at the job it was for. Now it seems you just make one bike and adjust the bolt-ons to sell more of them.

Literally having a rest in the middle of an extended road test on the manual with quickshifter version. Im really impressed actually - plenty fast and torque-y enough, sounds really good, very comfortable (im 6ft) and apart from the screen adjustment (which if you are like me once you have found the best position will never touch it again) I cant really think of anything negative to say about it. I am seriously tempted - and I was set on getting and Africa Twin but now i'm not so sure..... And just to confirm - the exposed wiring you pointed out IS exposed on my test bike as well lol

Nice one Tony as usual. As the guys below have said, great review.. Don’t think I’ll swap my Africa Twin, but this is a great value bike in comparison to the Adventure Sport. Incidentally mate, mine is a 2020 with DCT and electronic suspension and it did come with the cig lighter as standard. It seems to be a nice bike with an array of extras, however as someone who enjoys touring distances, shaft drive is my preference, maybe the 1300 engine from the Pan European (shaft drive) would of been an option! Thanks for the video. I’m trying to keep an open mind about these pavement-going ADVs as tourers, but I’m still not convinced. Probably because I’m relatively small and have long since abandoned large ADVs after one too many times of having to extract myself from a slippery situation. The one thing that would help to convince me, in addition to lower seat height, is power reverse. I rode a Ural for several years and even it had reverse haha. For now, my Norge remains the one to beat, with respect to sporty touring.

Nice review. I think more than a shaft drive, Honda need to work on reducing the frequency and complexity of the maintenance on that engine. It make Italian bikes look low maintenance. Absolutely love the engine, but a 40000km valve check like on yamahas would make a lot more sense on a touring machine. My 91 nighthawk has hydraulic valve lifters and spark plugs and air filters can be changed in minutes…instead of hours. Seat looks uncomfortable as on the Africa twin, thin and slope at the back pushing you toward the tank.

Orange running lights concern me - car drivers are inattentive enough that as you approach a junction with them on the left turning right, they see a left hand orange light, assume you’re turning and pull out. Screen could have been better but having had 2 RTs I find I have a favourite setting and never really adjust. Shaft/chain I used to be shaft stalwart but chains have dramatically improved. Panniers could do with being a little bigger (helmet sized), and once again Honda miss my money because there’s always big waiting lists.

The Amber running light thing has been adopted by BMW too and is causing similar consternation amongst owners. I think that having a distinctive drl colour is a good thing to stand out amongst the sea of white lights of cars. I have fitted separate yellow led lights but they switch off when any front indicator is blinking, thanks to ezcan.

Yep, i've had yellow lights before including headlights, as I agree a different colour light makes people look twice, which is a good thing. But i'm not so keen on having an amber DRL built into to indicator. I fitted some Denali lights to an Africa Twin and the ezCAN is a brilliant piece of kit.

Regarding the way the screen has to be grabbed with both hands to raise it. It's like 50 years of accumulated knowledge of what's good and what aint gets thrown in the bin when some bikes are designed. Who the hell thought that was a good idea for a touring bike of all bikes? I've seen other bikes where you can manually raise the screen with one hand while riding so there's no excuse to come away with a design like this Honda's. I also think chain drive is a bit of an error too.

Having the main parts of the review listed in minutes is a good idea. Taking the time to do that tells me something (good) about the reviewer. I'm interested in this bike as it seems like a good value but I'm concerned about the basically non-adjustable suspension. Yes, if they hit it just right then no worries, but suspension compliance is so subjective . Will the bike be comfortable on my broken roads? With no way to alter the suspension characteristics, it's going to be kind of a crap shoot if I can't get a test ride before buying.

Nice panniers/internal bags. This bike will be popular amonst riders who are not concerned with image. When did you get changed. I like the winter suit you had on at the beginning of the video. What is it, please? First-class review, but what does scootch mean?

Indeed, unlike some I don't nip out for a couple of hours on the bike and film a review. I get to know it a little ride in different locations and conditions and film segments at a time. Often if the weather is similar i'll be wearing the same kit on different rides, but we've had spring, summer and winter all in a single week here recently! To Scootch is to 'move a very small distance'...

Great review - thanks! Not sure if this has been covered but I live in a medium size metro area in US Northwest. There are 3 Honda dealers in a 12 mile radius. None have any idea when/if this bike will be available and have no interest in making any effort to research. I have a BMW RT which I love but unless you live on the East or Left Coast reliable dealership (service & maintenance) is really spotty.

Great review Tony (and I've seen some poor ones for this bike). I've just traded in my XADV for one of these but supply train holding up delivery. On the plus side I ordered it before the price rise on 01/04 so it's £400 cheaper than you quote here. For those who say it would be much better with shaft drive, well that may be the case but it would certainly add to the weight and cost. To counter that I would say that the centre stand makes chain maintenance much easier and a light oil after a couple of trips would see the chain last well in excess of 20k miles (+ it's more efficient). Thanks for the tip on the display!

Well its time to label the NT for whatit is. Under engineered. yes a Honda that is under engineered. That is an amazing fact for a Honda. Honda has been surpassed by many bikes in this field and you cannot deny it. Its sized like many competitors Honda has attempted to include the bike into a category full of competition, like Triumph, Ducati, KTM and soon to hi the market Moto Guzzi. This bike is nothing short of below the competition in every department. The only advantage Honda has in selling these under achieving mounts is their reputation. There is only one area where this bike offers something the others do not andn that is the DSG transmission. What a shame and a bad effort by Honda.

The thing that kills it for me is I don't see the cruiser part of it. All I see is a duel sport with street tires only on it. Also is looks the same as the NC750X again with street tires as apposed to duel sport tires. The only thing I do like about it is that it has 42 more HP then the NC750X does otherwise I would class is as a duel sport still has I feel it's miss the cruiser look altogether.

Chain drive also puts me off a bike for touring. I appreciate modern chains are durable etc but as someone who doesn't do chain adjustment (feel free to criticise me here) a shaft-drive is a godsend. Now, as much as I like the GoldWing it is (IMO) a very specialised bike. Sure, great to get across a continent, but not so good on the curvy roads of the Scottish Highlands. My ideal bike would be a shaft drive Honda NC 750-X DCT. But I'm not holding my breath waiting for one....

When I look at this bike the first question that comes to mind is if its “top heavy”?. Honda have a track record of doing this. The second question is “how long would it take before I became bored with this motorcycle?”. It seems like a perfectly nice, reliable (probably), well specified, but not exciting model. Its very Honda. I can see its potential as a good commuter motorcycle with the DCT gearbox, but I personally would want something different for the weekends.

Good review I thought 👍On the point of Pillions, I think this is something lacking on bike reviews especially on bikes which are more likely to be used 2-up touring etc. I always have two test rides on new bikes, one for myself for the fun bits and if that's ok I then take the wife to get her perspective. If it's uncomfortable for her then it's no good as a touring bike for us.

Well the CB1000 engine doesn’t have DCT which will be a prerequisite for this type of bike from Honda. Once this bike has been around for a couple of years I would be surprised to find a new 1300cc Pan-European introduced based on a upgraded VFR1200F/X which has a shaft and will be updated for Euro5 and slot in between the NT and the Goldwing.

Windscreen can only be adjusted by hand and when stopped. Common Honda; it should be electric so it can be adjusted on the move as conditions change. Chain drive! Maybe I can live with a chain again?

I like AF AdvSport better, especially when riding twisty roads. The NT1100 has more "disappointing" wind noise on the highway, even with a 17-inch front it is heavier in turns. Think this is more for "older" riders who like straight roads. A big disappointment is that there is no room for a helmet in the panniers

Seems like my opinion mirrors quite a few other large sport touring riders here. I absolutely love the look of the thing, but there’s 3 hard pass fails. I could get over the lack of a power windshield, but having to get off the bike to move it, major fail. Side panniers that don’t take a full face helmet, major fail. And chain drive on a bike marketed as a touring bike, major fail. Its a shame.
