You think the plastic rattly Lexus IS, the CT or the UX are outstanding in quality? And quality goes well beyond just using some soft plastics and fitting them together. What about the design and ergonomy? You think this late 90s style of laying around tens of buttons in the most impractical areas is quality? ANd all those hard plastics near the console and under the wheel... C'mon... Any decently trimmed German car smashes this cars interior. I concede that the fit and finish is really good. Its always been with the Japanese. They are superior when automating. But everything else is a big L for the Lexus.

Hes in germany. People keep cars for 20 years in here. We get properly built cars here else they dont sell. Aka, see how long shitty Chevy lasted in our continent. We dont have reliability issues with our cars here. We do have some, sure, but nothing to egregious and the Japanese are not especially better in any case. The Merc E class has been a top pick for reliability here since ages. Its the most used car for taxi fleets.

When my GS 450 was in the shop for maintenance I had an ES 300 as a loaner for a day. While it was certainly comfortable, it just felt so sluggish compared to the GS. Slower acceleration of course, less powerful brakes, a much larger turning circle and the engine was noisier despite being smaller. In my opinion the GS is just one step higher on the overall quality / luxury ladder than the ES.

I think most people are getting it wrong with the es. This car wasn't built to be a performance one but rather something that is comfortable, fuel efficient, reliable with attention to detail on build quality, not to mention the fact that it's a hybrid and therefore saves you money at the pumps as well as better for the environment. I have a 2019 camry hybrid and I can assure you that the two cars are totally different when driven back to back. I'll take the es over my camry any day. Thanks for a great review as usual Thomas and a very Happy Xmas to you.

But you get all of that in a better package with any other European rival. Not only the germans. Volvo, Jaguar and even the newer DS9 all seem more upmarket... And lets be honest, in this segment, which of these cars you think are ineficient? Or poorly built? I mean, a S90, in case you dont fancy the germans, not only equals the ES in the fit and finish department, it utterly destroys it in the material quality or comfiness side.

@@dragospahontu I'm sure it's better. But several car media have pointed out that the difference might be too small to recommend spending extra for the Lexus vs the Camry. It might also be that in Europe, cars are so expensive that people are hardly buying new ones and only on company lease. Since the European brands are cheaper, Lexus comes with an extra premium while Toyota did everything to price the Camry extra competitively.

The ES is designed for the US market. The aim is to cruise comfortably at 104,61 km per hour. German counterparts are made for brief periods of mindless speed on the Autobahn. As the ES is made for comfort, sport seats and big wheels don't do it justice. The dynamic offer in the Lexus line-up were the GS and IS, both killed off in Europe. Which is a shame, especially for the IS. The GS never found its customers in Europe, so replacing it with the ES makes some sense. But why kill the IS? It was the most suitable offer for the European market : the compact sedan (an estate would have been great, but only the first generation got a shooting break, ahead of it's time). If they had to kill off another model, it should have been the LS who's only customers in Europe are the Japanese ambassadors. Anyway, it's all about stupid SUVs with Lexus nowadays. There is some hope with an eventual electric line-up, but it’s going to be a long wait. And Genesis might fill the void... ps: why does every body feel compelled to make fun of CD players in cars. They still offer the best sound rendering. What's the use of a great sound system in a car, when the only thing you can play on it is compressed music from your phone or a streaming platform? 🤔

The DS is trully special. Intelligently built for its purpose. Its even quiter and more detailed in its design than the most baroque of the Mercs. I dont think the Lexus is quite at this level of uniqueness and quirckness. I think the ES' most obvious competitor is the A6 actually. Striking design but contained sportiness. Average material quality but great fit and finish. The S90 is a class on its own in my opinion. The focus on the most important aspect of a car, safety, makes it trully unique. You wont find a single S90 with subpar lightning systems like base germans or clunky driving assist systems like that of the Lexus. Its material and fit and finish quality is also exceptional and the design is very reminiscent of their old boxy days. Quite boaty to drive though, which is unfortunate. And its heavy so not that efficient either...

The autobahn test is interesting because it's one of the only places in the world where you can drive over 130km/h on public roads. A car developed anywhere else would not have extensive noise testing above these speeds, and would also never be used at those speeds in most places. It's no surprise that German manufacturers are the best in that regard.

I think that's pretty simple. The Japanese (apart from Nissan) tend to not add the newest technologies the moment they're ready to use in cars. The Germans especially are on the cutting edge, so they kind operate as "Guinea pigs". Don't know if there are some deeper reasons as to why, Toyota is a huge supplier of finance to other manufacturers and maybe we are unaware of such supplies to European manufacturers. I remember visiting their Paint supplier a few times for work and had no idea how much of the supply chain was owned by Toyota, from the supplier of the containers to the materials used in the construction of the building, all Toyota owned. The organogram of ownership for those entities was a scary Web. But surprisingly they are open to questions about everything, unlike a couple other manufacturers that were clients of my employer.

It’s not just a Camry in a suit. Please see below: Is Lexus really a glorified Toyota? If you think so I have some information for you Yes, a lot of Toyota and Lexus vehicles are based on the same platform and actually share a lot of the same parts, but the similarities stop there. There is a reason why Lexus is a more reliable brand and a more expensive vehicle. I obviously cannot list all of them but I at least wanted to share a small example. Let's take the sheet metal used for the bodywork, for example: -The quality of the sheet metal has much higher overall quality and is held to much higher standards -No recycled parts are used -It's Zinc coated to help the paint stick better -There are MANY more steps to the stamping and rolling process -There is no crimping used -ALL welds are done with Laser weld that produce MUCH stronger welds that aren't brittle like regular welds which actually result in a safer vehicle -Overall the sheet metal process costs TWICE as much as the Toyota process The sheet metal is just one small example of the attention to detail that goes into the Lexus manufacturing process. Some others are the insane amount of inspection processes compared to Toyota before the vehicle can roll off of the line. The amount of training and certification that a Lexus assembly line employee has to endure compared to a Toyota line employee is significantly more. Even if the engine block is the same the casting process is different. All of these processes cost more money. All of this is to emphasize focus on "NVH". Noise. Vibration. Harshness. SO MUCH attention to detail is focused on NVH. If these types of things don't bring value to the table for you, I totally understand..and in that case the Toyota product is the right car for you to get. The Toyota is obviously still an amazing car that is almost as reliable and well made as the Lexus product. But if noise, vibration, harshness, overall drive quality and overall reliability and dependability are something that you see value in, rest assured that you are getting your money's worth when you get your Lexus. Source: Me. I am a 10+ Lexus employee who has sat in on trainings with some of the top guys from Toyota/Lexus. I don't care if you buy a Lexus or not, personally. It just irks me sometimes when I see people just make blanket statements about a particular vehicle being a glorified version of a Toyota and think somehow Lexus has just been getting away with slapping an "L" on the back and jacking up the MSRP. These cars are amazing and even I take for granted how much time and attention to detail the Japanese have put into these vehicles. Just my .02

Toyota and Lexus seats are extremely comfortable. I recently drove 3400 kms on a long journey in a Toyota and my back wasn't even sore once which it usually is in my E Class and in the 5 series and A6. They don't need fancy seat kinetics and countless adjustments because the seat itself was well designed. There wasn't even pressure that I usually feel like there is no blood flow in my legs. Renting that Toyota and experiencing it over 3400kms gave me huge respect for Lexus and Toyota. It's funny you mention seat ergonomics because since the W212 E Class on, Mercedes seat ergonomics went down a lot. They used to be so comfortable back then with the W211 E Class and W203 C Class etc. But now the comfortable seats is only reserved for the S Class which is bs. My E Class makes my back so sore no matter how I adjust it. I used to be an avid Mercedes fan but no more. They're not what they're used to be. There is something extremely pleasant about riding in most Toyotas, even the Corolla just gives this very pleasant ride experience. Lexus just ups it more and gives noticeably more refinement. Euro cars feel heavier and more weighted, which is good in a way, and the firmness of the seats and ride is different, more pronounced, in the Euro cars. Even the softer riding Mercedes have an underlying firmness where the Lexus has a weighted softness to it.
