This is the Lexus ES! This hybrid Japanese saloon is designed to take on top-of-the-range competitors such as the Audi A6 and Mercedes E-Class. The exterior design certainly stands out compared to the more ‘conservative’ and well-known German models, but can it do enough to disrupt the high-end saloon market? Stick with Mat in his latest in-depth review to find out!

46mpg (about 5.1l/100km) for a car this size, in real road conditions i assume, it's surprisingly good. But too bad they ditched the GS and it's RWD from Europe. Let's hope for a awd version, at least, but i doubt.

@85CEKR
@85CEKR 4 жыл бұрын
@@shawnmichael9331 well I've owned 2. My first a 335i the injectors went bad, twice, fuel pump and vanos issues. Also by 70,000kms the engine started sounding horrible. Idled louder and rougher than my Jetta TDI with 300,000 kms on it. Luckily I was able to get rid of it at 100,000 kms for a decent amount. I took great care of it changing the oil every 10k twice as often as BMW recommends. I thought I was unlucky and got a dude so we bought an X3 with the N2 engine. Wasn't too bad for the majority of its life. It died twice on the freeway because of ignition issues, lucky under warranty, but the kicker was at 100,000kms the timing chain went and the engine blew. BMW blamed me because I changed the oil myself (even though I again did it every 10k and used to quality oil (ams oil)). So we now have an expensive paperweight sitting in our driveway that I don't know what to do with. Side note, when we had our x3 at the dealer getting diagnosed, I started a conversation with a technician who was on smoke break, he said our car was one of 5 in their shop at the time with a broken timing chain. Also a friend of mine bought a 430i and new and sold it after 6 months after it had been in the shop a total of 5 weeks with various issues. So ya pretty much any brand is more reliable then BMW

Why don't you comment on reliability and the cost of owning? A Lexus, being produced by Toyota, is waaaay cheaper to own and maintain over the lifetime of the car and has a much higher quality of components (everything not merely aesthetic) than it's German rivals. The Lexus can go for thousands of miles after the similar German cars have become endless money pits. I love your videos, and it would be very enlightening if you could comment on reliability, expected cost of maintenance, etc. for those of us who like to keep our cars for a long time and would like to see programmed obsolescence disappear from the car industry. Just compare the quality of the old mercs with the modern ones... I think it's worth mentioning that some brands make their cars to last much longer than others. It is very valuable and interesting information for buyers. Thanks for your great job!

The German Brand's nickel and dime you to death for things that should be standard by now. It never ceases to amaze me how some folks seem to glaze over the fact that German cars typically have a lot of electrical issues. That's just a fact. These cars are very difficult to maintain. I have friends and family members who've had really bad and very expensive experiences with BMWs and Mercedes. I just think the German brands are made for people who can afford not to care how expensive the cars are to maintain. I believe their primary target is upscale customers. Although Lexus caters to upscale customers as well, I believe they target a much wider range of clients on both the high and lower ends of the financial scale, so reliability is a must.
@PreferAndroid

@@svein-haraldribland8559 Not good enough for what? Most people don't drive cars on the racetrack. The average consumer is typically driving back and forth to work in rush hour traffic. I think some folks just get caught up on the brand name and the prestige that comes along with having a BMW or Mercedes. For us regular folks, we like to get the best bang for our buck, and reliability is a must. Lexus knocks it out of the park when it comes to reliability compared to those other brands.

Lexus is not more reliable than BMW because of the plastic, lol. You guys are absolute clowns. Why dont you keep your opinions in a box if theyre gonna be this dumb. BMWs are less reliable than Lexus' because they are generally 50% more powerfull and 70% faster and 100% stiffer while also managing to be more efficient... And all of this causes more wear and tear than what a grandpa mobile performance is able to do. Most engine components that were resin based in old BMWs were there because of weight saving BTW. Lexus and Toyota could learn a little about it.

I don't know if you meant this as a joke, but in my personal experience this is actually true. Everyone in the dealership, especially the service and parts departments... will know you on a first name basis. You'll even be friends with them on facebook and whatsapp. Even when you pull in into their parking lot they'll know its you. This would have been good if they knew me because of my very impressionable personality. But the actual reason was because I was a regular when it comes to repairs, break downs, and servicing. The guy in the parts department had come to know me so well that he always tried to give me the maximum allowable discounts on parts I needed. I only buy Japanese these days. 400k on my current car and haven't done a single repair, just take it for normal service.

I sit in an LS300h taxi right now and I love it here from the rear seat! ❤ This car has a beautiful black/tan interior and the seat is so much more comfortable compared to a Mercedes E-class, I would rate it somewhere in between E-class and S-class. And I have plenty of headroom, I'm 186 cm / 6'1" and I have at least 5 cm margin to the roof. Only small minus (from rear seat perspective) is suspension comfort. I may be spoiled by my personal Mercedes with airmatic, but as I remember my time spent in the rear seat of Mercedes E-class taxis, I think also the Mercedes E-class ride with standard suspension better than the Lexus.

Great video as always Mat! This doesn't help you guys in the UK only getting the Hybrid, but I've heard the V6 has 1-2" of more rear headroom because the batteries for the hybrid are under the rear seats! Would you say the E-Class is the most comfy car to drive up to that price point? Will watch your video on that car, but just curious as to what cars in your opinion are the quietest and most comfortable for the money.

Tested the ES250(non hybrid) and E200 a few months ago. The NVH on the Merc was more noticeable than the Lexus. And the buttery smooth 8 speed gearbox is just fantastic while the E Class was very jerky/hunting at low speed. Matt should not have compared this hybrid version to it's German rivals but rather should have done the ES350 3.5 litre V6 version.

@@328skipad2 Hi buddy. The E class was jerky on certain occasion such as slowing down to a stop or constant slow speed(keeps hunting for the right gear). Once cruising the car, the E class, I have to admit is superior to none and I can also say that for the 5 series. The transmission on my ES is so smooth that a mechanic friend of mine thought it was running on CVT as he could not hear or feel any gear change. That's how amazing the ES is. Here in Singapore,only a handful hold their value in the long run,such as BMW,Lexus and Mercedes. The rest have terrible resale value.

It's just too bad they feel like they are decade behind the German's on tech. In the end most lease their luxury cars example here. I think that's the reason why Lexus just doesn't sell globally even 1/8 the amount example BMW sells. Also these days Toyota's reliability is not the same it was in the 80's and early 90's.

Thank you for the EXTREMELY ACCURATE and most importantly, *HONEST* review! I totally agree with you , especially on the issue of the *noisy engine that drones* when you accelerate, and also the fact that Lexus cars are not comfortable anymore! The German vehicles have become vastly superior, leaving Lexus in the dust, and this is due to Toyota's own doing!! It appears they've gone mad! That said, I must say I am a loyal Lexus/Toyota buyer, and I buy them primarily for their *RELIABILITY AND DURABILITY* which is *LIGHT YEARS* ahead of the German vehicles. When the German vehicles have turned to dust, the Lexus or Toyota product will have just been "broken in". And, of course, as you correctly pointed out, the quality of the interiors and the fit an finish is amazing! If it were not for the reliability or durability, I wouldn't touch a newer Toyota or Lexus product with a 10 foot barge pole. They have become extremely unrefined, noisy and do not do anything well, all in the so called name of being "sporty". And I personally, don't like the direction they've taken in terms of the styling as well, although this is an area that is subjective! Most so called "automotive journalists" just sugar coat everything and simply heap praises upon praises for a particular car, while nitpicking a very small thing here and there, just to show the (mostly idiotic) audience that they are "being fair" and pointing out the negatives as well. But this is an obvious farce, done to suck up to the manufacturer. Kudos to you for being a breath of fresh air!!
