Regarding the black plastic pieces around the wheels and bottom, I honestly love it! Not from an esthetic perspective but for durability. We have harsh winters with lot of salt and little rocks in Canada. I think those are doing a great job protecting the paint around the edgers and delay the risk of getting rust all over.

Other manufacturers can learn from Mazda. Great driving dynamics, power, good road handling and maintaining traditional features such as the buttons and traditional shifter. This is what a car should be and used to be. True drivers car. Above all no CVT. GOOD JOB 👏 I own one now. I love it.

The torsion beam rear makes it handle poorly especially on roads that aren't perfect. The turbo is opposite of good driving dynamics...it's like a diesel truck engine and runs out of power by 4k and never feels willing. Huge disappointment

@gilboman actually it's all about how you tune it. Mazda cars are fun to drive, but there still designed to be used as a everyday vehicle. independent suspensions like wishbone, are used in alot of trucks, but they're not always tuned for handling. And in trucks most of the time they aren't, but sedans and small crossovers handle well even with a torsion beam. but the main goal is to soften the ride, that's why they say you give up handling. that's not always the case, some vehicles that have independent suspension aren't necessarily tuned for handling, but could be used for a AWD or offroad setup. most cars even today, are front wheel drive by default, so depending on how you do the rear, you can either go with a independent setup or torsion beam. how you choose to go about it, will determine the handling. now you might say sports cars never have it, ah and that's where you would be wrong. by designed independent suspensions are probably the best setup, but unless the car is rear wheel drive or RWD for short, a independent suspension isn't as necessary, but sport performance cars that have a AWD setup, that's where a independent suspension comes in handy. it's because you need the traction in case of slipping, you don't have to worry about in RWD setup. but most crossovers are designed like most sedans, that means FWD by default.

The main thing I love about Mazda vehicles is they stuck with "the good ol days" of auto making. For example: All Mazda's have a spare tire (MOST new cars dont, especially EV's!), all Mazda's have a real torque converting transmission (MOST new cars have CVT "transmission" - sad!), the CX-30 comes standard with AWD (THANK YOU MAZDA!!), and interior comfort/luxe is standard for all. Well done Mazda.

Thanks for the candid presentation/review. I always like the Mazda simply because they all have conventional automatic transmission. THe downside of the Mazda fleet is the relatively poor gas mileage.

enjoying my CX-30 after two years ownership. It's the GS model with the regular 2.5L and gets impressive fuel economy. Very impressed with the dial use of the infotainment system, so easy to use but a bit of a learning curve, but you can operate it with feel without having to look. Like the large cladding, drives great, handles great, impressive power from the 2.5L engine. The 6 spd auto is very smooth and turns over quite slow rpm (about 1800 at 100 kmph). The smaller interior compared to some of the competition does bother me as the package works fine for my use and the interior finish was way above the competition.
@ghenry852 жыл бұрын
The torsion beam rear suspension is an oldy but a goody. It provides a very secure feel but still allowing enough "flex" to smooth out most bumps on most paved roads. My previous two cars had this system and it worked just fine. It's also cheaper to produce and very reliable. Oh and the cladding is not a bad thing, Mazda may have gone a bit over board in this case though(not terrible), in my humble opinion. Great vids, you two.

Based on my experience with the two brands, Mazda has now occupied the spot that Volkswagen had when it decided to fill the void left when BMW went up market in around 2005. My 2022 CX-30 GT has the normally aspirated engine, the "Carbon" package with the black trim and wheels and the red leather interior. I refer to it as my "useful sports car". Three points: The speedometer and displays around it are digital, the interior ergonomics are exemplary once you live with it for a bit and my average fuel economy since I got it is 7.2 l/100kms. Anyone needing extra back seat and cargo room should look at the CX-50 - as it is a stretched CX-30. The CX-5 is a different beast altogether.

The odd thing about those new rottary or button shifters is that it's not even saving space. It often takes up the exact space of where the regular shifter would've been. So what's the point other than the wow factor that will wear off in a few days once you get fed up with relearning to drive a car. At least with column shifters, room is saved in the centre console which can be used for other things like storage, cup holders, wireless charging pads, etc.

The black cladding is just fine with me - why? Two reasons. Living in NH, winters and rock salt and potholes that spit rocks up on the body panels usually pit and chip the paint off, giving rust a leg-up, so as a paint protection feature, I like it. Yes, narrower would have been better, but that brings me to reason #2. I drive the car from the inside, not the outside. I am not constantly looking at it and evaluating how it makes the vehicle look - but I am fine with that as well if I think on it now. I have the same paint as shown here with the black wheels and grill and I frankly don't think there is a better color on the planet than the Soul Red. I usually don't like red so go figure, but it simply looks great.

Thanks for your fantastic review, loving this car! However, I have read about oil burning issues on the 2021 turbos. Apparently it spans the entire Mazda lineup that uses turbos. Has anyone heard of this happening in the 2022s yet? I love the idea of this car just for the fun Factor as you guys describe. It sounds like it would be a genuine thrill to drive all the time. I would be hesitant to buy one until Mazda determines how to fix the oil burning issue on the turbos. Mazda has officially acknowledged that a problem exists but apparently they are searching for a solution. Until they have a concrete solution in place, dealerships are telling owners to simply top off the oil. Thanks for any information anyone can provide about this.

My mom has a ‘22 Turbo base model. I don’t get the complaints about fuel economy; I did 500 miles on that car over a weekend and got 28 mpg highway at not-so-slow speeds. Where it stinks is local stop and go driving (e.g. NYC local roads) where it gets like 16ish mpg. My #1 complaint about the car is the driver seat. The lumbar support doesn’t minimize enough and the thigh support is too little. The speedometer plastic is way too soft as well. Last complaint is the blind spots /visibility, which are a common issue with bubbly cars such as this.

Corolla cross l, just don’t like the looks of it and it lacks the power 4. Honda HRV could have been a great option even if it is a lil pricey but for that price they should have gone with some other engine. 2.0 l engine is noisy and lacks power. Would be a difficukt one to push. This leaves us with MAZDA CX 30 which in my opinion covers up the shortcomings of other but then don’t leave you with any back space 😐. What do you think guys? Thank you for the Mazda CX-30 review, in red. Well done. Yet, the poor gas mileage with premium gas is something to think about and the cheap looking plastic cladding is a major distraction ! Mazda is providing a ''luxury'' interior , fine details on the exterior, with beautiful smaller taillights, an exotic front end and all this with an ugly grey cladding on the side. Down the road, with sunlight, road salt/sand, this plastic might be looking faded /dull. To offer a premium model with a painted cladding option would be nice and tempting.

How about a 2022 Kia Sportage SX turbo.. would you put it in the same class and it doesn't take premium fuel 🤷
@jeffer11012 жыл бұрын
It's a nice car, and I get the desire for the power. However, I think that love for the greater power wanes over time. Especially when you're just stuck in traffic 75% of the time and have to pay the premium for the optional engine and the premium fuel to feed it. It's one of the reasons I went with a Toyota Hybrid (Venza, sister car to the RAV4 Hybrid) last year. It has plenty of get up and go and I typically see city fuel economy numbers in the 5s and sometimes down in the 4s. This CX-30 Turbo in the low 12s is comparable to our Sorento with the Turbo4 as well. With gas around $2/liter (dropped a bit recently), that's a lot of extra cost in fuel. Also, these engines are direct injected, so you may have some costly maintenance every few years to clean out the carbon build up. The interior is definitely really nice (in terms of design and finish) and as long as you don't need the extra space (I personally wouldn't), it's still a good car. And I get the "more power" desire, but I don't regret getting my hybrid one bit. Almost as much power, half to a third less fuel costs. Toyota Hybrids are also known to be among the most reliable cars on the planet, and Zack (and Andrea?) agree the RAV4 Hybrid is the best vehicle you can buy. You can get a nicely equipped mid-trim for about the same price as this CX-30. You just have to wait for one (have to wait for pretty much everything right now).
