A truly outstanding vehicle. Even though I’m getting a 2022 Toyota RAV4 Adventure Hybrid and possibly pick it up next week, I can also say this 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has quite a few advantages. Good luck for people who buy one. A very high quality SUV by Mitsubishi. Auckland.

I have a 2020 outlander PHEV and I absolutely love the regenerative braking paddles (nice magnesium), this new PHEV, which I'm drooling over, seemed to have the paddles in plastic attached to steering wheel. This review nor the other NZ one didn't mention if paddles are there. They allow you to coast down a hill at a speed of your choosing without putting foot on brake.

1:33 Dave - the "Dynamic Shield" design language is the two D and C shaped pieces of chrome at the front, and the rest of the design between and around them - it's been a theme in several Mitsubishi models for close to a decade now. So this "advanced" version is their latest iteration of it. Not sure how that relates to I-Fu-Do-Do that they also talk about...

Ok… I don’t know why all the reviewers avoid this but what’s the 0-100/0-60?? And what’s the tow rating? I have one on order in Canada and NO ONE KNOWS/SAYS what these are! Mitsubishi might not appreciate this, but the RAV4 Prime has a very quick 5.7 second 0-60. That makes it Toyotas 2nd fastest production vehicle. If Mitsubishi isn’t anywhere near that for a vehicle with very similar price and economy….. why would I buy one? Also, there’s a new “POWER” setting on the fun dial…. Why has no one addressed this and what it does? Is it for towing or does it add go fast juice? Does Tarmac provide the power on this vehicle or just change the driving characteristics? It looks like you enjoyed the power, so what is it? All good questions I wish someone would answer. Hope it’s you guys!!!! Other than that very insightful review. Thanks!

Tow rating NZ 1600kgs with a braked trailer, 750 kg without brakes. 0-100 kph about 7 seconds. Power mode fires up the ICE in readiness for fun and does some other stuff too. I think it livens the throttle response and the steering.

@@blackwoodfamily9227 Thanks!!!! Answers a lot of questions. The non-PHEV tow rating it too low for my use. But 3500lbs is more than enough!!and I’m happy around 7 seconds. That’s as quick as my wife’s Civic Hatch and more than enough for some driving fun.

This car doesn't have a CVT. It is a one speed overdrive to the front wheels above about 70km/hr

A lot of vehicles are going that way now. Sure if you’re doing 140 kmh for 10 hours solid an 6 speed torque converter would be better. But for 99% of situations ECVT is more than ample.

@@johnmartin7158 You still mention CVT. This vehicle has not and never has had a CVT. The electric motors are single geared and do all the heavy lifting for acceleration etc and can be aided by the engine driven generator (Series hybrid). For open road cruising the normal mode is parallel hybrid. I.E engine engaged direct to front wheels....single geared (no CVT). Also this car has a 56 litre tank. Great car...but the VRX second row is only for hobbits or very short humans. The sunroof is a joke.

Actually the gas engine on the Outlander PHEV isn't connected to any drive shaft, because the gas engine only acts as a generator to provide electricity and power to the electric motors and the battery. There are 2 electric motors, one at the front with 100KW of power and one at the back with 85KW of power or 248HP, but with the gas engine turned on, the total output increases from 248HP, to 308HP.

Published reports show a combined power output of 185kw and 450nm, or 248 hp and 332lbft. Please clarify this, the front electric motor is 85kw (113hp) and rear electric motor is 100kw (134hp), for 185kw. Does the ICE running in parallel hybrid mode not add any additional power?

Great review, except for the CVT blunder. I was explaining to my Mitsubishi dealer that I’d rather the 18 inch wheels, 5 seats and no sunroof. But I really wanted all the electronics, all round view etc., so was therefore squeezed to get the VRX. I’m still torn as I really don’t like the lost headroom from the sunroof and lost boot space from the Bose system. A big shame the 7 seats couldn’t just be an add on option. Oh well. But the BIG warranty looks great, and if that battery is reliable long term, it should be a beauty.

Thanks for watching, comments and support. Looking to get rid of the CVT reference (but it does sort of drone a lot like one) but more impressed with its more EV cleverness. It really does do the EV range and it's quite an exciting ride under full power. I would say that you'll barely ever raise those 2 (ahem) seats at the back.

Definitely no CVT gearbox Selecting EV mode - the battery normally drives the electric motor(s) The PHEV switches to serial hybrid when the battery is at low charge state or when in SAVING mode- the ICEngine drives a generator which drives the motors, and CHARGE mode prioritizes charging the battery. At a certain speed or when accelerating quickly, the vehicle switches to parallel hybrid mode - a clutch is engaged so that the ICEengine is coupled directly to the front wheels (basically like selecting overdrive gear), but igets assisted by the electric motor(s) for more power. This video is for the older generation PHEV and illustrates how they work: kzbin.info/www/bejne/govCkGhji5t2iqs

I had the misfortune of renting one of these behemoths over the last week. The forward visibility over the bonnet is dangerously compromised by the high flat bonnet. The size of the vehicle makes it unsuitable for most city use. I can’t imagine why any sane person would buy one.

Not a great review. Most people interested in the phev would like to have had more specific information about the various drive modes and what its real world performance is as an ev and in the hybrid modes offered. How economical is it when used as intended? What is an indicative ev range? I really wanted to learn more about the phev side of things. This is where the focus of the review should have been.

Honestly who is telling Mitsu these need seven seats? They're only good for toddlers - and thus only good for a couple of years. If you are a breeder with more than 3 kids, you need a van. And you sure as heck don't need a 4x4 because there's no room to put stuff for a family trip anyways. I'd rather they had more boot space for trips, longer thigh support in second row, and fold flat second row too. Low profile tyres also seem a mistake. I wonder if you can get ordinary tyres when due. May give a cm more ground clearance too...

You as a reviewer have the responsibility to not use your bias opinion on the 3rd row seats. Because let's face it, it's obvious that there was a great request for them hence why Mitsubishi did it. Besides that, you and I both know anyone no taller than 160cm will sit comfortably in the 3rd row seats. The target ordnance of a medium size suv is always about travelling with kids and not 7 adults.
@TarmacLife
@TarmacLife 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and comments, however, in this case I completely disagree with you. As a reviewer it's my obligation to point out things that in my opinion are virtually unusable. Even at 160 cm comfort is not a word I would use for those seats and to gets kids back there would require kids in the second row rather than a reasonable sized adult. Appreciate the desire for 7 seats and applaud the cleverness of the way they unfold but for me, they are a no go.

@@TarmacLife if the previous generation 7 seater wasn't already a proof that the stats shows that the 5 +2 was vouched for by the consumers, the Gen4 has even more space then how's your opinion validate your quote? Your average adults are 6 foot and that will fit the front 4. So why couldn't you fit 2 kids under age of 6 years old ? Anyway. My comment to your video is info where take it as an alternative perspective or as an negative it doesn't worry you neither me except some people would debate you otherwise why Mitsubishi would bring out 7 seater as an option for 3 generations in a row if it was 'unsable'

God-awful how ugly this car is. What is with the Japanese designers, they make brilliant cars, but for the of life me, I don't understand their aesthetic mindset? As a designer, I've been observing the Japanese car designs and still baffled as to how the local tastes don't translate globally. With possibly the exception of Nissan, the rest, including Lexus have adopted this stupid fake chrome styling and lack of stylistic thread/theme. When a Lexus looks like it's parent Toyota Prius in many ways, it's lost its way. They're damn great cars, don't get me wrong, but fix up the design, inside and out!
