2022 MJF65 Education Wrap Up

The Monterey Jazz Festival has been changing lives through jazz education since 1958.
In our continuing return to live music, MJF was proud to present several of our education programs at the 65th Monterey Jazz Festival in 2022: the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, which selects 20 of the most accomplished high school jazz musicians from across the country to perform at MJF, and directed by GRAMMY-nominated pianist and composer Gerald Clayton; and the Next Generation Women in Jazz Combo, which features top high school women jazz players from throughout the United States, and is directed by award-winning bassist, vocalist and composer Katie Thiroux.
In addition, as part of our expanding partnership with Texas Southern University, MJF has broadened the participation of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) by creating special events and performance opportunities at our annual festival and California State University, Monterey Bay.
At MJF65 in 2022, in partnership with Google and Alaska Airlines, MJF presented jazz ensembles from Texas Southern University (TSU) and Morgan State University (MSU) on several stages, including a live-streamed Sunday Morning Gospel event on the Garden Stage that featured Tammy Hall, Brown, Sturgis, and Brown, Valerie Joi Fiddmont, and Leberta Lorál with members of the TCU and MSU choirs.
