Purrs like a cat with the jag engine, shifts great, lots of power especially in the mid and upper end, and returns reasonable fuel economy on road trips of around 12l/100kms. Super comfort and style with some nice tech, and features, and great stereo! The issues are electronic and air suspension related typically. @@CruiseControl1 yea, that makes way more sense the old buick V8 used in the 90's and 2000's were known for headgasket failure, then piston liners slipping. Disco's, RR, all had it . If you could keep the cooling system functional, they were otherwise pretty good tho. Top hat rebuild is the only way to truly resolve the issue after you've had a severe overheat or find a different powerplant like an LS swap. The Jag 4.4 used on the 2006-2009 models LR3, RR Sport and RR are actually quite reliable and are known to easily go 200k miles plus without issue. The 2010's and up got the 5.0 plagued with timing chain guide failure. I'd personally avoid those. The new ones sure look sweet but getting quite complicated and expensive for my tastes. That checklist of things to look over before buying actually seems like solid advice no matter the vehicle. I look over most of those no matter what kind of vehicle I'm thinking of buying and keep a checklist of about a hundred things to check whenever I need to purchase or help someone purchase a vehicle. It takes at least an hour to examine one properly, unless it's new of course. Who wouldn't check things like the radio, steering, shift smoothness, seats, oil quality, and windows before buying a vehicle, whether a Land Rover, Ford, Toyota, or Holden? It's a big purchase, and it's good to know what works and what doesn't to help make a decision on whether or not it's worth buying. A lot of people will just assume "Oh, it's a Toyota/Honda, so everything must work because nothing goes wrong with them." Yes, I have actually heard people say that. One I know even went and bought a twelve-year-old Toyota 4Runner just because it ran so, therefore, it must be good because. . . Toyota, right? It died a horrible death on the side of the road a little over a year and many repairs later. He drives a fourteen-year-old Lincoln SUV now, and it's been much, much, much more reliable. Four years and hasn't broken anything yet, despite being used the same way.

I have a 2008 Supercharged and they do live up to their reputations (and I'm told I have the best iteration of the bunch), but it's not worth enough money to get rid of for how well it drives. One thing I love about it besides all the physical controls is simply the leather on the steering wheel. There is something so nice about it. I did just have to put two new front air struts on and paid for Arnott units from FCP Euro at a third or less of the price of OEM units. And these they'll replace for free (not including labor) if they ever go wrong. Now to fix that coolant leak, power steering leak, sagging headliner, torn seats, scraped paint... yeah put a little money aside if you pick one of these up.

I went through all of these thought processes back in January when I was looking for my current daily (2010 Range Rover HSE). Looked at the forums, personally talked with people who owned them, and even test drove them. I also was cross-shopping 1997-2007 Lexus LX’s and GX’s and test drove those too. The Lexus’s were the safe but boring choice, and also had some higher wear and a lot of deferred maintenance. The Range Rover I ended up buying was newer, had much better materials and quality, drove and rode WAY better, and just felt special to a degree Toyota could never match. Seven months later and I’m still very happy with my purchase. It’s not perfect, and I have had to do some maintenance on it. But it’s not maintenance I wouldn’t do on any other car. Find a good indie shop and you’ll be fine.

Absolutely agree with you. I've had a few different cars in the past couple years, mostly performance cars because speed is fun, but I never loved them as much as I love this car (well except for my 2008 Boxster S). It just drives so well, feels special, and makes me feel like James Bond where I could save the world and look good doing it too. I went with a 2008 Supercharged with the 4.2L. The thought of the 5.0 timing chain slapping and absolutely grenading the valve train would be just too much for me to handle, both mentally and financially. The older Jag units are pretty strong, with some minor here and there stuff. However, one thing that amazes me about this car is the community support (misery loves company?) and knowledge. I'd say it ranks up there with the Porsche crowd. Now, with the leather cladded elephant in the room, they're actually not unreliable if you find the right one. The Range Rover game is all about preventative maintenance, changing the oils every 5000 miles, changing the transmission and dif fluids every 50-60k miles, etc. If you do the proper preventative stuff, they're pretty solid. It's when there's a weird ticking noise, or you let the air suspension compressor just run all the time, then things get super expensive real quick, but if you can turn your own wrench and do the maintenance on them, they're not too horribly expensive or unreliable.

My dad has always wanted a Range Rover. A few years back, when he turned 55, he was dead set on buying one. He had had a huge promotion at work, there were no big expenses coming, it was the right time to go out and buy one. We couldn't find one affordable enough. The prices are insane! And there were no units available either. When you got to their official website, they had like 3 actual used ones on sale, and that was about it. After that, he rented one on a trip, and he wasn't impressed. We started a business with the money instead.

I have a 5.0 Supercharged L322. It has over 230km. It’s definitely British motoring at its finest, meaning it’s great when it works, but it’s not without its minor reliability issues. Also, I think the L322 in this video is not a real Autobiography Ultimate, just badges as such. It’s a fully optioned HSE. The Autobiography ultimate had leather headlining and teakwood trunk and leather door cards and it’s a very very very rare car.

I have owned three Land Rovers and one Range Rover. Never experiencing a catastrophic failure. I currently own a 2011 Range Rover Supercharged, with Autobiography trim. I also have an 2013 LR4 HSE LUX, the last of the V8 Discovery’s. I think the Fifth Generation Range is truly an homage to the Third Gen L322. With respect to my Rover Experience, I have maintained both with proactive maintenance, always dealer serviced. There is no other SUV on the road that compares to Land Rover or Range Rover. The rugged elegance, paired with the crisp conservative lines make it a stand out wherever you go. There is a reason why Range Rover was exhibited in the Louvre in 1971. Every time you get behind the wheel, close the door and look out over the bonnet, you realize just how special these Rovers are. Looking forward to this next generation. No Rover is for the faint of heart, notwithstanding your financial ability, this is brand that requires respect and attention. Sadly many Rover owners fail to understand its history or appreciate its capability. Just because you have the means to buy one doesn’t, mean you should. If you don’t appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into a well pair of hand made shoes or a fine cut of a tailored wool suit and/or you are not willing to care and maintain such finishings, maybe you should think about another luxury SUV. Rover is not a Cadillac, or even a Mercedes. Rover is in a class all by itself. Fear not, Keep Calm and Rover On!

Just bought a 1012 Autobiography yesterday having listened to real wold experiences from log term users and having done well over 200,000 miles in contemporary Jags (last was the 4.2 supercharged V8 which has never had a single issue up to 170,000 miles on the engine) with no issues at all with regular maintenance - and that includes trips around the Nurburgring and Oulton Park (the last 2004 Jag needs new sills so I'm deciding what to do with it - the rest is as good as new - which still amazes me). This Range Rover looks pretty spectacular and I'm just expecting reasonably expensive maintenance as on any luxury/performance car ...so lets see how this goes. My real world experience means I'm relaxed and looking forward to not only only fun on the road, but using it as the world's largest lawnmower with a flail mower in my backyard ... luxury and mud plugging - that's what these are about ☺

Once you drive a RR really very little else compares. I had a 2005, best truck I have ever had, out of BMs, MBs I put most 100k miles on it. Had the extended warranty which saved me more than once. I can't imagine having one without, nor driving one long term, say 200K miles like we put on a 2003 Disco, which was a great truck as well. Literally no problems with it except it started burning a lot of oil at 140K. The current pricing of the RRs even the Sport is just staggering. Especially with ADM nowadays.
