Very few of your 10k followers are worried about electric trucks not being as efficient as electric golf karts. get with the times. the electric transition is important and we need electric trucks or it will never happen. even if you like EVs why would you lead off just trashing the vehicle for the one property it has no control over? a rock crawling 4x4 SUV that has a Cd of 0.32, shocking! not every car is a highway range/efficiency monster nor should they be. a professional publication like edmunds should be reviewing the product for what it is, in its segment, not giving a monologue about efficiency. I mean, if you want an EV with a usable 3rd row and reasonable cargo space behind the 3rd row, this is basically the one and only option you have. The Model X does not have a 3rd row usable by adults, and the Model Y 3rd row isn't even usable by children. A cat is about the largest animal that can fit. This one, the host only briefly alluded to the fact that the 2nd row can slide a bit to make room for the 3rd row occupants (he mentioned that the 2nd row was set for adults), but didn't actually demonstrate that. But whatever the case, that 3rd row can house adults with some amount of room, even if not in 1st class luxury... That is something that exactly zero other EVs on the market right now have. And for some people, that is a box they need ticked. I feel like in all the talk about efficiency and "ludicrous" performance, people have forgotten that car buying decisions are not 1-dimensional. People care about different things... and yeah, hitting some of those marks means there will never be a way for a Rivian R1S to be as efficient as a Tesla. So what? Some people need some things that Tesla does not offer at any price.
@mikecoleman46282 жыл бұрын
It's ludicrous to harp about efficiency of a truck vs. existing EV sedans and "SUVs" - it's a given that heavier vehicles are less efficient. It's a total "water is wet" point. You don't see any review of a TRX (which weighs almost as much as an R1T, btw) where they say "well the fuel economy doesn't really compare to a Honda Accord" because it's common sense. Ultimately it means the R1T (or any current or emerging Truck/SUV EV) will cost you more to operate wrt "fuel costs" just like any full size truck.
@isserdigan28352 жыл бұрын

Two comments, in addition to what several others have said. First, efficiency. As applied here, it is a very murky concept and therefore ends up as pejorative rather than descriptive. It is certainly not particularly illuminating. So the context is that it is kind of silly to compare a very off-road capable and very on-road capable pickup truck or a full-size, seven-passenger SUV to a four passenger econobox road-only car. Of course, the smaller much less capable vehicle will use less electricity per mile. This isn't news or insight. This is a statement of something less than helpful. Second, saying that the R1S is in a class by itself is unhelpful, dishonest, and disingenuous. Of course there are BEVs, PHEVs, and ICE vehicles that compete in the market category that the R1S occupies, but they are not discussed, and the R1S is not compared and contrasted to them to help people understand the class of vehicle in which the R1S competes and both it's merits and demerits in that class. Altogether, this review is not very helpful.

Don't care much about this review. What is he comparing the R1S to ? There is no other SUV electric. Getting into the third row seat in any SUV is not all that easy. R1S 121 inch wheelbase, Ford Explorer 119, Chevrolet Tahoe 121, Ford expedition 122.5, Ford Flex 118 etc. (Ford Mustang E doesn't have a third row.) The third row is convenient and not a Greyhound bus. Curb weight ? Very heavy, compared to what ? The F 150 Lightning comes in at 6,500 lbs. but that's a pick-up, the R1S 500 lbs. more. He 's not impressed with the towing capacity: R1S 7,700 lbs. Chevrolet Tahoe 8,200 lbs. Jeep Grand Cherokee 7,200, Dodge Durango 6,200 lbs. Ford Explorer 5,600 lbs. Ford Flex 4,500 lbs. This guy is obviously not a Rivian fan although he does admit it's in a class of it's own, for now. I agree the lack of knobs and car play or android auto is a disadvantage. The big guys are working overtime and when the time comes Ford, GM and (Stellantis) will make the Rivian price come down or they will dry up. The Ford F 150 Lightning's price will take the early electric pick-up market. That will hurt Rivian's R1T. But, the R1T seems to be in a different market somehow. As of today, Rivian has impressed big time.

Would love to get some stats behind this statement: I would believe most people in the market for use of that third row either plan on having young people there (or work at a circus with short people ;). I would venture 75-85% are planning their kids or carpool kids into that space. I am a resy holder but need a review with actual kids in this SUV and in that last row. Let me know if that exists pls…
