I really like these range tests in non-perfect conditions. Seems to set a more reasonable expectation and having a "real world" scenario helps potential owners get a better understanding of what its like to live with. I'd actually be a huge fan of you and Kyle testing the same vehicles but intentionally having one of you do it in the worst conditions possible so we get both ends of the spectrum. Great stuff Tom!

Kyle got better range because he did his range test at a higher elevation, which means less air density and thus less drag. New Jersey is close to sea level, vs Colorado which is about 5000 ft above sea level. Cool video BTW. Cheers from Canada.

Good video. Love that Rivian but 2 miles/kWh is not great, but I guess that's what you get with a truck. Kyle's test was at a higher altitude. At 4,800 feet the air is about 8% less dense than on the NJ Turnpike. Humid air is more dense, as is colder air... and then there's the wind. All of this only means that EV owners need to take range estimates as estimates. Apps like "A Better Route Planner" can be very helpful in planning out trips that will push the limits of an EV's range.

There needs to be a better indication of range from the EPA (or other agency, not sure why it's EPA now that it's not really "miles per gallon [of gasoline]" anymore. Maybe DOE and the National Labs should take over.) Now that public mass adoption is happening I'm seeing lots of threads on Reddit and such of people selling their EVs after being shocked by the "real world" range. It's like: "300 miles!*" *Unless it's cold, or windy, or you're driving above 45 mph, or you're driving up a lot of hills/mountains, etc etc. In which case range not only decreases, but decreases SIGNIFICANTLY more than would be the case in an ICE vehicle. The public needs this realistic expectation setting. In my opinion, all EVs should come advertise with three numbers (1) Max Range - aka what we see marketed today; (2) Highway Range - what you'd expect cruising at 75 mph; and (3) Unfavorable Conditions Range - Take a moderately windy day at 25 degrees fahrenheit on the highway... almost every EV's range would drop 50% but if you live in Minneapolis you should be aware.

My awesome R1T 22’ has been amazing. 25’ should step it up with nacs and 180kwh battery. Without making it much heavier if possible. (200 miles if you charged it to 100% and drove it to 0% ) This is range you’ll get for the battery not for a road trip. Cut that number in half and that’s your roadtrip range!!!! Crazy bad. To add 60% battery takes 30 minutes if you find a good charger. So if you see EVs going 60 mph on a roadtrip. Now you know why. I’m hoping the GM EVs sell amazing. Well it is a huge truck so I am not surprised it consumes a LOT at a meagre 110kmh (on the lower end of highway speeds here in europe). and the range is pretty low. also because that are nice conditions so cut off 30-40% for winter. also proving that one should seriously think whether you NEED such a masssive car. as with SUVs I think 80-90% of people drive those things for absolutely no practical reason and would be served well with a sedan or combi. I drove eg a Skoda Roomster way back when I had 2 kids, wife, one dog and often 2 cats plus luggage to move at the same time (with roofbox). worked out 99.9% of the time just fine. If I consider that my Model 3 Long range has a real world range of summer 550-600km at such low speeds and still is insanely fast if needed with a consumption at 40% of that of a Rivian, I would say, "burning" electricity needlessly in unnecessarily huge cars is as unreasonable as burning fuel ...
