The devices Dustin is looking at are the X and XD Series available from Schneider Electric and are connected wiring devices. This technology allows you to see how the individual device is performing as well as being able to control the device, via Wi-Fi, and turn it on or off! Schneider Electric has a Wiser Energy Monitor that allows you to see your overall systems performance. Which circuits are using the most, which are using the least, etc. However, with the advent of these new devices, the Wiser Energy Monitor now allows you to see the performance down to the device level in lieu of just the circuit! A pretty cool technology that is coming soon that should greatly improve how we see and track energy usage in our homes. The X series is currently available, and the XD will be released to the public soon.
The two specific devices that Dustin previewed in the video are the X series Dimmer and Receptacle. These devices allow you to see what is happening with them remotely via an app or on your phone, and even allow you to control them. So, if you left home and forgot to turn OFF something, you could simply login and shut that individual device OFF. Or, say maybe at Christmas time, you wanted to turn ON your Christmas lights or tree, you could do that.
A USB charger/receptacle is also a device that is offered within the series. Unlike other USB/receptacles that are available from other manufacturers, Schneider Electrics offers 2.4a USB ports on BOTH locations of the device, as opposed to the 1a & 2a ports on others. This allows you to charge your devices faster from both locations as well as being able to charge larger items like tablets.
A switch is offered as well. Upon initial glance, it appears the same as most paddle type decora style switches. However, the entire paddle is removable on these new devices. So, if your devices got painted over or scratched or something, you can simply replace the face of it and not have to rewire the entire device! Or to freshen up the look of a home, you could replace the face and face plate without having to redo ALL your devices. The XD series of plates for these devices changes the smaller size rockers with full size rockers. This can be a huge advantage for elderly, folks with vision difficulties, or smaller children, as it allows a much larger surface area to actuate the device!
On the XD series of devices there some additional changes on the internal ends of the device. The ground has been moved to the SIDE as opposed to the bottom and has been reinforced to operate the same as the hot or neutral wiring locations. Also, there are a variety of plate options available with these devices as well. There are several different color and style options that can be changed without tools and with relative ease.

Looks like everything shown is all single gang configurations. Not sure how you'd use that giant paddle switch in a 2 or more gang box. And because it says Schneider on it, I'm guessing it's 3x to 4x more than any of the other brands on the market.

Yep. In Europe you‘d use an MDT Universalaktor 2416.03 and several MDT Glastaster 2 to switch up to 24 lights, blinds and sockets from a push button sensor that can deal with 16 functions. All using KNX an open standard for digital electrics designed in the 90s and just released in v3. Add a Homekit or Alexa Gateway and your house is completely smart by adding a handful of components to your fuse box. It‘s pretty sad to see all that IP-based retrofit crap in the US, which ends up in a landfill every few years!

USB-A on a device in 2022 is a failure, I have no clue why companies are still putting this port in devices. I won't buy a car with USB-A ports because it instantly limits the connectivity to the car.

While I am also a big advocate of USB-C, I fail to see how it limits the connectivity of your car. The biggest differences are power output and bandwidth, neither of which are needed in high levels in a car. USB A-to-C cables are very common, so it's not really a compatibility issue either. What is the limiting factor for you?

Disconnected most of my smart home stuff a couple years ago. Besides privacy concerns, it becomes a total pain in the ass when the internet is down or router crashes. Lights are always unpairing etc. Tech just not there yet. Needs to be all local processing with no tracking from corporations for me to ever get back into it.

I purchased a Hubitat Elevation because it is all local and does not require the Internet at all unless you have an unusual device that requires the Internet. In my case it is a voice activated microwave as I am severely visually impaired and can no longer read the buttons.

Sounds like you unplugged when it was getting better. I started using “smart” devices about 4 years ago and have been happy with a practically “whole” smart home. I use less energy and no longer have to be the “wasted energy police” in my home. You mentioned a challenged network though… have you tried mesh wireless systems? I highly recommend orbi mesh wifi systems. I have gone through the struggle for well over a decade (probably closer to two decades) to find reliable wireless routers. Orbi mesh wifi is solid and I know my “connected home” owes a lot to that.

I'd recommend checking out Home Assistant. It can run on just about anything (dedicated Raspberry Pi, virtual machine, your old laptop that's in the back of the closet, etc.) and is completely free. While it can connect to tons of cloud services, its biggest strength is the amount of locally controlled services (called "integrations"). I use it as a Zigbee, Z-wave, and Bluetooth hub. Every light, fan, and curtain in my house (as well as a couple appliances) is controlled though it and it's all locally controlled. Completely private and doesn't care about internet connectivity.

Life long sparky and not big on all electronically controlled devices. Had $10 grand fancy lightning controls that after 6 years was obsolete and before it was ten years old had to be replaced. Installed some receptacles with USB~A charging slots. A few years later had to rep!ace them with newer smaller USB charging slots. They should supply a shoe horn to squeeze extra deep receptacles/USB charger into a 2.5" metal wall case.

I closely follow developments in the world of network security, privacy, etc. I can tell you that no matter how secure a company touts their IoT devices to be, there's no way Schneider or any other single manufacturer can harden their devices against attack. Every week there's horrifying news about some chip or subsystem deployed in gazillions of devices which been rendered defenseless to outside attack. The world of hackers and security researchers is absolutely teeming with activity. New hardware and software exploits are found _daily._ Even if an IoT device doesn't ship with baked-in vulnerabilities, you can rest assured they'll develop some as more exploits are discovered. Once IoT devices are deployed they're usually difficult if not impossible to update and secure, making them sitting ducks waiting to be compromised.🦆🎯 Put your Christmas tree lights on your home WiFi network if you want, I guess, but know the risks. At very least make sure your IoT devices are on their own secured VLAN or behind dual NAT routers or _something._ Never expose then to the open internet.

If someone wants to get in they will. Kind of like the saying 'if there is a will there is a way". The security of these devices is only as good as the smartest person setting them up. Yes they are risk and knowing the risk is the key.

while it is true that vulnerabilities are exposed just about every day, the vast majority of those exploits are found and patched and never used maliciously. As far as NAT and VLANs go, those aren't really security mechanisms. Yes I would agree on segmenting the network and have an IoT vlan, but if you leave it at that you aren't securing anything. devices can still route to any other segment. You would need to add some security mechanism in the path as well (a traditional ACL, or security policy on a firewall, ect). Finally, don't let paranoia stop you from utilizing technology benefits. The chances of a malicious actor taking over a smart device is slim, and even in those situation its businesses that they target, not homes as businesses are where the money is at.

I can't only imagine where that segment of the population will be in 10 - 20 years. The big problem with putting electronics into everything is that electronics fail. I hope that all of those devices are designed to fail in a fashion that continues their primary function. The future owners may not appreciate having to replace some of those after every lightning storm. The more complicated that we make our homes, the less reliable they become. The light switches and outlets of the past have lasted 3 decades or more. Many electronics don't make it a couple of years.

At this point (2022), I don't think it makes sense to install USB-A outlets in a house. You definitely want USB-C (and then the user can just buy the appropriate cables of amazon for like $3 each). Leviton makes an outlet with 30W USB-C ports; this will fast charge an iPhone/Android and is probably enough to charge some small laptops or iPads. It's model T5635 or T5835.

I wired a whole house with smart switches just because the father of the house wanted to be able to turn off the lights from his phone. He said he was tired of telling his kids to turn them off. So basically spending money to not teach his kids to turn off the lights.

Having smart switches and receptacles is about more than just being able to control them remotely. I have them paired with motion sensors to turn them on automatically and also program them to turn off automatically after a few minutes of inactivity during a specific time period.

The sad thing is, these receptacles are going to cost something like 40$ a pop. (The power monitoring ones). Just looked and 41 bucks from Home depot for example. Cool concept, but until they literally cut half the price, don't see it being really something contractors are going to be installing everywhere. The markup to the customer is going to be a hard sell to really be doing a full house install, unless the concept is literally to install in a couple locations (TV area for example).

When you have daisy chained plugs do you really put both hots in the plug. So the load of 1 plug is going through every plug. You should pig tail each wire for the plug. So the load isn’t on each plug

All these new wireless Switches are pretty cool, but for some reason they do not make the Fan / Light Combo switch which I get asked for all the time. The Switches are to Big, it is hard enough to get a GFCI in a box, if we can make TV's the thickness of a credit card basically LOL they need to start making these devices smaller.

The big problem with the apps for these devices is that they always require you to have internet access for the app to work and stores the data on the cloud. What if I want the data stored on my PC or a personal nas instead of the cloud? And why does it have to connect to the internet for remote operation if I'm on the same network as the devices? That's only creating unnecessary operational lag. The other issue is if they discontinue the line and create another app that doesn't work with the devices and discontinues support for the old app, you lose all remote functionality. Being able to control lights from miles away is nice, but some people will want to set up control on a device that stays at home. There should always be an "off line" mode for the app where it will still operate and see the devices without needing an internet connection.

There should be an offline mode but a lot of these companies bank on 1. Selling your data on the backend and 2. Locking you into their closed source hardware+software. There are some moding communities dedicated to jail breaking these devices to basically operate how you describe. Emporia has a pretty good community if u want a jumping off point into that

@@viktormorris194 except that this technology is an added convenience and not a requirement for me so I'll be voting with my wallet. Besides, I'm an electrician and know how to install current loops. If I really wanted to, I could install a commercial lighting controller and any necessary contactors to remotely switch the loads as well as the equipment needed to monitor the loads. I'd even have voltage monitoring. If I wanted to and had the money I would have a system that provides more information than the system shown and the information would be privately stored.

Be wary of TP-Link. If the product fails during the warranty period, you have to pay to ship it to them for repair. And, if they decide to replace it, they will do so with a refurbished item.

I too, work with my college-age son often and we have a blast together when working on a remodel. We are mostly working on our second home and remodeling the entire inside before tackling the siding sometime next year. The only problem is that he is getting a computer engineering degree this year and he plans to go into furniture building which I do as a hobby. He wants to work on redoing kitchens and helping design and make cabinets and built-ins for customers. So I guess that college money was wasted. I am happy he is wanting to do something with his hands and I guess his computer skills can help me in doing sketch-up plans on builds. BTW, I never even took a shop class but I got interested in woodworking when I got into the Army. Now, we have remodeled 6 homes over the years and I have built everything from desks to new kitchen cabinets for our home. I am looking forward to retiring (the second time) and helping him discover his talents and abilities.

Does this capability require Cloud connectivity? What company is providing the cloud functionality/hosting? Is their a monthly fee/subscription? What digital security is provided? What assurances for the LONG term support of these capabilities?

Smart controls. Leviton is crap, especially with Apple apps. Luton Caserta works very well, and Lutron has wireless remote switch pads, to create multiple switches without wiring. By far the cheapest and most reliable are TP-Link smart switches. The customer paid $29 on Amazon. Alexa program runs the security lighting on the entire house. Alexa do this Alexa do that😄

2.5 amp charge is too slow for the 5G phones. I run USB-C @3.5A at home and 5.5A charger in my vehicle. My android phone stopped displaying slow charging warnings.

The main issue with inwall usb etc is limitations on technology. The ONLY USBA that should be purchased today is QC3.0 or higher. Usb C is so prolific, it just needs to be used. Until THAT tech can fit into an outlet, this stuff is unwise.

They already make dual USB-C port outlets on outlets today. Up to 30W per port (better than the 5V 2.4A USB-A ports here, or 12W max). Only issue is they're like $50 per outlet, which is a bit much compared to $1 for normal outlets.

dont forget that most of this in-wall usb suck power even when nothing is plugged in. I always set them up on a wall switch so you can kill the vampire load and cut power bills when you aren't using them.

I wouldn't buy anything new until Matter is released. This new industry standard ia scheduled to be released at the end of year and may make older and newer devies incompatible. Unfortunately, it's very up in the air right now. Do your research.

I try to stay away from the USB receptacles since they are Transformers they are constantly running and using power it might not be much but if you got a whole house full of those USB receptacles you will notice a difference at the end of the month I'm sure

Good modern switching converters use almost 0 power when no load is drawn. On the order of 50mW (milliwatts). Even if you had 100 of them plugged in, 50mW * 100 = 5W, which would be something like 3.6kWh per month. Since nobody is gonna wire their entire house with these things... You will never notice the difference in your power bill. And even if you did, you're probably never gonna notice.

I once saw a comparison on this. Shutdown all devices that have vampire draw and you’ll still use more energy backing out of a short driveway once than the combined electrical load for a year. Or idle your car when stopped somewhere or accelerate hard or … Not saying you shouldn’t be aware and do what you can but there are a lot of higher impact energy savings all around us.

he has the conductor under the plate rather than around the screw so it doesn't matter which side its on sense the screw is just compressing the plate down on the conductor.

those are flat terminal connections and will not push the wire out. It's basically a clamping device. You could put 2 wires under each clamp if needed. (left and right of the screw)

USB oulets are not smart devices, and neither are devices with fancy plates. Smart devices connect to a network and/or your phone. How does Square D's system work? Does is use a hub, or perhaps direct wi-fi connection? Hub connected devices have been troublesome in my experience.
