Weird how it's a Corolla crossover, but hey, for those who drove a Corolla and want a little more ground clearance and visibility of the road, this might be a good option. And it's literally the same as a Corolla inside, so interior-wise, it should be very familiar and it shouldn't drive any different than a normal Corolla sedan~~ Toyota simplicity, efficiency, and reliability should also give you enough reason to buy this, or any vehicle for Toyota really. It's just a good daily driver, and it's a good option for those who may not want to drive the RAV4, which may be more rugged and bigger. Just think of this as a mix between the C-HR and the RAV4, that's how I like to think of it.

All vehicles should come with an under hood blanket/sound insulator as added on the 2nd year (2020) of the current Rav4 generation. I will be looking at this when I need to replace my 17 year old Corolla that is still driving like new. So I just saw one at the dealership today. Not allowed to drive it due to Covid. I'm 5'10" tall and with winter boots on with a slight 1/2" sole, my head would barely touch the rear liftgate when opened. I will now look more at getting the Rav4 because I do not want to slouch everytime the liftgate is open and I will likely forget from time to time and hit my head.

@catbirdler2 жыл бұрын
I just bought the XLE with a black interior and the seats look great, very soft and comfortable with adequate bolstering all around, and I'm not even a fan of leather/vinyl seats. The XLE comes with 10-way power seats and adjustable lumbar support which makes a HUGE difference. I also tried the Rav4 and wasn't impressed with the seats. Seat comfort is very important for me and I drove my car 400 miles right off the dealer lot, no complaints. The only car in this class that does it better is the Mazda CX-30 but the more spacious cargo area and touchscreen of the Cross sealed the decision for me.
@ofcbob63912 жыл бұрын
@@catbirdler Cindy, the interior you have, is it called "black with linear express"? I never wanted a black interior because it's well, so dark. A dark gray would be ok with me, as it won't show wear over the years like the light interior shown here. Also, all the car reviewers complain that it is just underpowered. But who floors the pedal all day long like this guy? He must be getting 22 mpg they way he accelerates. Have you tracked your mpg?
@catbirdler2 жыл бұрын
@@ofcbob6391 The interior I have is simply called black, or black softex (the faux leather material that comes standard with the XLE). The interior shown in the video is called macadamia/mocha. I see you can get grey fabric seats with the L trim, but in the XLE these are the only choices you get, and I much prefer the black (yep, dark) interior over the 2-tone lighter option. I hate that so many reviewers emphasize the lack of power in this car. Sure, there are peppier cars out there in this class like the Kona and the Mazda CX-30 that might be more "fun" to drive. But no-one is buying this car for drag racing, right? For everyday city and highway driving, it does just fine, you certainly won't notice the lack of power in stop and go traffic LOL. If you're the kind of guy that likes cut in and out of traffic on the highway at 80+ mph, maybe this isn't the car for you, but I had no trouble passing trucks, and if you use the adaptive cruise control it actually increases your speed automatically as you change lanes to facilitate the pass. Kinda cool. My only minor complaint is that the engine IS somewhat noisy when doing anything but light acceleration (like, when ramping up to speed on a highway) but I can live with that. I tracked 30 mpg for the length of my trip.
@ofcbob63912 жыл бұрын
@@catbirdler Wow Cindy, you should be a car reviewer! I noticed on some vids when they show the engine, there is no insulation under the hood. Toyota did the same "mistake" when they introduced the RAV4 in 2019: it was noisy. So what did they do right away for 2020? They put the insulation underhood. Why oh why didn't the Cross have that from the get-go? I betcha Toyota will add it for the Cross next year.. I guess just turn up the radio volume if you need to get "on throttle" ... for now. Anyway, is your black leatherette sort of a dark gray, rather than black? My local dealer wants $699 for a wax job and another $400 for clear plastic on the hood and mirror caps. I don't need that but it is forced on the car at the Toyota port in Jacksonville. What a scam.
@catbirdler2 жыл бұрын
@@ofcbob6391 Heh heh thanks for the kind words! SOooo, there is in fact insulation under the hood, but *only* in the XLE trim level. I noticed it in my own car when I popped it open and if you watch Cross videos featuring the XLE trim, you will see it when they open the hood (including this video at 3:50). The black leatherette is really a soft black, more like a deep charcoal grey. You can get a good idea for the actual color in the video at 1:23 where you can see the side view of the driver's seat and the area with the controls below the seat cushion. That and the steering wheel are pretty much the same color as the leatherette and you can see how they contrast with the piano black accent around the gearshift and the touchscreen. Hope that helps. I think you're getting off rather easy in terms of dealer mark-ups. I was all set to order a car from my local dealership until the manager pushed a price across the table that was $8,000 above MSRP!!! 😳 I went home and searched for cars online between New Hampshire and South Carolina (and I did look at Jacksonville too, once). Most places were marking up their inventory by at least 2K if not more, or were adding junk you didn't want but were forced to pay for just to keep the price more in line with what other dealerships are charging. I ended up flying out to Pittsburgh PA to get my car and driving it back to Long Island right off the lot. Apparently I'm not the only person to have had to jump through these hoops to find the right car at the right price. Crazy stories for crazy times. Once more thing, since heated steering was mentioned in the video - FYI a partially heated steering wheel IS available as an option, but only in Canada!! I guess Toyota didn't feel it got cold enough in the US to make it worth offering south of the border. Bummer!

@@HonFclbri The passenger volume of the Corolla Cross is 115 cubic feet while that of the hatchback is only 85 cubic-feet, so wheelbase is not the only criterion to consider when you're talking practicality. I haven't sat in either, but I've seen them in the metal and you can tell that Corolla Cross is far more practical than the hatchback even by looking at them. Whether the extra practicality, more ground clearance and AWD are worth the decreased performance and higher price or not depends on the individual; they certainly are for me.

How in the world does this seem to handle wind noise better than the RAV4? I test drove a 2022 Rav4 and it sounded liked I was driving through a tornado on the HWY. Toyota really phoned it in on that one.

@@andybub45 Someone at Walmart just asked me if they carry 0w-16. We looked at the whole wall of engine oil. NONE. You probably have to visit a specialty auto shop for that, probably at a higher price than more common ones like 0w-20 or 5w-30. I'm sure Toyota dealership would charge you an arm and leg for something like that. If walmart don't carry it, you know you are buying something uncommon.

Does anyone know which country the drivetrain is made in? Great review, as always!

Since the same CVT and 2.0 engine are installed in many Corollas assembled in Mississippi, I would be very surprised if the Alabama Matrix's drivetrain is not made in the USA.

Because we pay full taxes in Europe according to cubic inches or power….Rav4 is 2,5 l and about 300hp. Corolla will come with 2.0 and 200hp and it’s really enough for our traffic.
