Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro. The advanced Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro system, standard on all GTI models, presents drivers with a fully configurable 10.25-inch display with three views and 21 viewing options, including car status, navigation, driving data, phone information, driver assistance features, and more. Models equipped with the Discover Pro infotainment system with navigation are able to display a full screen map in the digital cluster and simultaneously on the center display.
User experience designers have developed a unique GTI graphics layout for the standard Digital Cockpit. It can be opened using the new “View” button on the steering wheel and consists of a combination of three round instruments: the rev counter with GTI logo in the center surrounded by one round instrument each on the left and right. These can be individually assigned, for instance to show the engine’s boost pressure or the current power output.
MIB3 Infotainment. All 2022 GTI models feature innovative Volkswagen MIB3 touchscreen infotainment systems. The displays utilize a capacitive-touch sensor (as in smartphone and tablet technology) rather than the more common resistive touchscreens that require pressure, enabling controls like swiping and even pinch-zooming. Bluetooth technology for compatible devices is standard, as is App-Connect smartphone integration for compatible devices, which offers users the ability to run select smartphone apps directly on the vehicle’s display through services such as Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™ and MirrorLink®.
The GTI S features a Composition Color MIB3 infotainment system with a glass-covered 8.25-inch display, wireless charging for compatible devices, multi-phone pairing, HD radio, and four USB-C ports-two front, two charge-only rear. The GTI SE and Autobahn upgrade to Volkswagen’s Discover Pro unit with navigation and a 10-inch display, voice control, and SiriusXM® with 360L (three-month Premium Plan trial). With a paid Car-Net Hotspot subscription and Plus Nav package, maps can be automatically updated with current traffic and construction information.
The GTI’s EA888 evo4 engine displaces 1984cc and produces 241 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 273 lb-ft of torque at just 1,750 rpm. The evo4 engine is paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or an optional seven-speed DSG automatic transmission with Tiptronic®.
DCC. The Golf GTI Autobahn features the latest version of the DCC adaptive damping system, which manages the suspension’s rebound and compression rates individually, helping to improve vehicle dynamics. The DCC adaptive damping system continuously reacts to the road surface and driving situation while taking account of various inputs including steering, braking, and acceleration. By means of the set driving profile mode, the driver can influence the reduction in body motion as desired. The required damping is calculated for each wheel and adjusted within fractions of a second. This ensures that DCC always provides the highest level of driving comfort and ideal driving dynamics in conjunction with the vehicle dynamics system. For example, “Comfort” optimizes the dampers for a smooth highway ride, while “Sport” favors a firmer setting for better cornering performance.
In the latest DCC generation, the vehicle setup can be extended in “Custom” mode to go beyond the existing range of the fixed “Comfort,” “Normal,” and “Sport” modes. The driver can set and store their personal driving profile using a digital slider to adjust damping firmness. Beyond the “Comfort” setting, the body is isolated from the road surface as much as possible. Beyond “Sport” mode, there is an extended setting range with maximum damping for minimized body movements and extremely direct handling for that unbridled GTI feeling.

This car looks SO much better outside and in, when you see it in person than it appears in still pictures. I'm a MK7 owner - I've had my MK7 new since 2015, and before that - I had a MK6 new since 2011. When I saw the MK8, I thought VW had lost me. As time went on it started to grow on me, but just last week I went to my local dealer to see one in the flesh. Got to drive it too. The MK8 is NICE. Really nice.

Just traded my beloved 7.5 for an 8. Both S trims. I adore the 8. Actually just discovered the GTI 8 months ago. Bought a low mile 2020. Kept it for 7 months, loved it so much I traded for the 8. Same dealership, so it all worked out fine as far as money. They were very nice to me & gave me what I paid for the 7. So that was nice.

I like this review which is a lot more thorough and detailed than other reviewers that simply leave out. I recently went to a local VW dealership and saw the 2022 VW Golf GTI, Autobahn, with a 6-speed manual, in that pomelo yellow color. It was gorgeous! The only thing is that that dealership had a huge markup on that car. The MSRP, including destination charge, was at $40, 099, which is quite expensive. However, the dealership wanted $46,595 instead, just because they could. Of course I walked away. I mean, I can afford that price but just because I can doesn’t mean that I should. For as long as there are people willing to be suckered into paying those outrageous prices the car prices won’t go down to reasonable levels any time soon. But as for me, I refuse to just give away my hard-earned money to some unscrupulous, greedy car salesmen.

I went to my dealership and they had added a 10K markup! I left and the salesperson followed me out and offered to negotiate without the 10K markup... I bought this car and I love it! But I would not have spent 50K on it - that's just beyond the pale.

I do hate this too Henry. The whole dealer thing is a racket, and there's enough money involved that some of the red states even have laws in place PROTECTING the car dealer "industry". Elon Musk acts like a douchebag on a regular enough basis that I would normally not even consider buying a Tesla, but if these dealers continue getting away with charging arbitrary dealer markups then that might just enough to push me towards a Tesla if I ever do go for a new car. At least with Tesla you don't have dealers to worry about.

Nicely done. Learned some features from Mike that were not mentioned in the other 99 2022 GTI videos I watched.😀. I must say that the soft touch controls are growing on me. It seems to be the way car manufacturers are going these days with tech. Buttons and knobs are diminishing everywhere and VW is jumping on board. The blend of tech and mechanical machine is interesting. I want one in white!

VW is coming out with some fantastic upgrades of their existing lineup as well as new vehicles. I own a 2019 VW Arteon SEL Premium R-Line and have enjoyed it immensely over the past 2 years. Looking at one with sub 20 grand, aready new steering wheel and gear shift knob (manual) replaced. Currently drive a 2012 mini cooper s. Test drove the 2022 Autobahn and felt nothing with the shifts. Is it that smooth or was I expecting more tork compared to the mini s? Needing a new car.

Great review Mike! These Golfs are getting pretty pricey nowadays IMHO; I know the handling is great, but any more you can go with a full-on crossover or SUV that still has decent handling but has a lot more utilitarian value, at a price that's often at or below the price of a Golf. I do love that yellow color tho!

There’s never any comparison between a SUV and small, little, supple, zippy, car. Plus the Golf has as much storage space as a small SUV that’s just a lifted hatch. Thus changing the center of gravity, giving away a more fun drive. I mean, when I’m even older than I am now, a lifted position will be nice for getting in and out. But until then, I really hope we don’t lose fun cars entirely

All the gauge cluster displays looked too garish and-or busy for my taste. The use of the honey comb background interfered with clean , legible presentation of information. That it has a spare tire is a big plus. I am veeeery reluctant to ever buy a car with low profile tires again. Maybe in So. Cal or Fla. it is ok, but anywhere with with winter and potholes they Suk. I am 6'5" and those fixed seat backs with no adjustable head rest make me nervous. I have had several VWs in the past because they always seemed to fit tall people. Maybe now not so much. I am having trouble finding one in my neighborhood to try it for myself.
