Test drove iD4 and Mach E, much preferred the Mach E, found the iD4 souless and dull to drive. The iD4 infotainment also was really poor.

The new ID Software 2.3 brings massively improved Infotainment experience. IMHO software can be changed easily instead of changing suspension behaviour.

The MACH E for me! Looks far better & has a brilliant infotainment system with proper switch gear. The VW looks dull & the switch gear would drive me nuts! A Mustang badge also has a classic cult following just like any classic VW has. Well done Ford!! A Great start to making electric cars.

I recently decided to get a new car, and tried the two, plus Ioniq 5, and I think they are all good to drive. The ID 4 is a great car, and I don't think anyone choosing that would end up disappointed, but in the end I suppose it all comes down to feelings, and those is difficult to argue against/for. I ended up buying the top specified (Rapid Red) Mustang Mach E with RWD and the biggest battery, but it was not that it was a lot better. It was just the car that gave me the most enjoyment. It just felt more alive and better on the road. It was quick and responsive, and the sound system was awesome (B&O). And yes: Seeing that Mustang label around did bring out the little kid in me. To me it is the better looking car as well. Unfortunately I did not find the Ioniq 5 particularly interesting. Of course this is just personal preferences, but to me the interior was boring, the design was more like a 1980's Datsun, and I did not fall for the retro look at all. But a decent car to drive. A Tesla Model 3 was also considered, but it felt small compared to the others, and back seat and boot space was not good.

ID4 Pro S owner here have had it for several weeks now. Very happy. I can’t help but notice that you didn’t talk about CarpPlay on the VW and criticized the system for being confusing yet you went straight to CarPlay when you switched to Mach-E going further as saying it’s better. VW has CarPlay and honestly that’s pretty much all I use when on the road. A bit disingenuous. Climate control: In the VW, from any screen you push a button for “climate” and adjust it on the screen, nothing hard about adjusting it there. Push “climate” again and it brings you back to the prior screen. No one has ever mentioned this in the 10 dozen of vids I’ve watched. Except that it’s very confusing for all. Lol. One push too many I guess🤷🏼‍♀️ I actually don’t like that those controls on the Mach-e is too low, takes one’s eyes away from the road quite a bit. Dangerous.

Both cars are good but I purchased the ID.4 and very happy with my decision car drives good, spacious and so quiet plus 3 years of unlimited charge is a no brainer. Awesome video.

They did, and they overdid it. Reviews of the US-specified version describe the Mach E as comfortable and smooth. Also, I think the much thinner tires do a pretty bad job too.

In my opinion no one should buy lower specs cars (entry level). If I cant afford medium/high specs, I take a step back and re-assess my options.

The frunk is essentially discounted here on the Mach e. It’s practical and can serve as a ice cooler since it has a drain plug.

@@NedNew like reliability? Have VW sorted the sudden power loss issues?. I've seen 3 id3's broken down so far, not very good. But then it's what we should expect from VAG. I've started compiling a list of most common cars I see at the side of the road, basically it's anything German, and this is backed up by reliability reports and breakdown companies yet people still buy them. fools.

Q4 is worst EV ive driven, its a 4 out of 10, suspension rubbish noise over bumps, really slow

I have the ID4 and I love it. So much room, and I our 3500 km roadtrip from Denmark to Italy and back was a treat. And I have hight adjustment of the boot in my ID4.

@Jimbo Über I have no software glitch. But the features of the software could still use an upgrade. Seems like v3.0 is coming this spring. The steering wheel is actually a plus when you get use to it.

I have some questions, I really hope you can help. How many charging stops did you? And how many passengers and luggage was in the car? Was it easy with the to find fast charges?

The volume buttons with haptic feedback on the steering wheel are fine enough. No A/C ones though.

I have driven both. I ordered the Mach E. The stereo in the ID4 sounds bad and it not really fun to drive like the Mach E.

Regarding climate control on ID.4: you always have the climate control icon on the infotainment system, so even in cases you don't see the hardware buttons (which you can control blind anyway) you can use the infotainment to adjust the climate settings. But sure backlit would be nice. Regarding double floor: ID.4 does have an adjustable floor, however in very limited configuration options. (E.g. right now only available with the first max). Regarding touch sensitive keys on the driving wheel. Well I am not sure whether an owner will have that issues. In my case after 2000 km I never managed to activate the touch sensitive buttons by accident. Where I have issues: connectivity issues with app or with the internet (VW common problem, not ID.4 specific), comfort opening of back hatch behaves differently to BMWs solution. What I do not miss: one pedal driving. I never even use B(reak) mode. D(rive) mode automatically decides whether to slow down and recuperate or "sail" i.e. roll forward in a neutral position and save energy.

The reviewer asked for opinions, and here is my clear impression after driving a Mach-E Premium and ID.4. The ID.4 is the far better sorted vehicle. It's a zen-like experience, really, and that is almost completely high praise except for one sticking point--acceleration is rather dull. An BEV should have a much better sense of smooth, nearly bottomless torque at lower speeds. The Mach-E is poorly sorted. I especially detested the crude regenerative braking that lurched the whole car forward, but the ride even at low speeds is fatiguing and the handling on a hairpin curve is nerve-racking. The ID.4 has the best ride/steering/handling of any SUV I've ever driven. I did not notice the praiseworthy ground clearance at all, and the turning radius is almost shocking it's so good. Yes, the climate control interface is awful and the Ford is marginally better looking. But the ID.4 is real SUV with ground clearance and towing capacity and the Ford is neither a true Mustang nor a true SUV. I say that as a proud owner of a Ford Focus ST. When I'm in the market for an SUV the ID.4 will be on the short list. Cheers from the USA.

Interestingly, the leasing price (here in Germany) is very different for these cars for similar conditions. The ID.4 is around a few hundred euros per month cheaper for the same contract and specs. Strange!

Id4 is the winner now that the infotainment has been fixed with software updates.... Plus most people will use wireless Android auto and car play. Id4 gives everything you need at better value. Just throw on Awd and it's everything you need.

There are so many things going really wrong on the VW , from poor quality materials to massive issues with the infotainment system ( saw another review where infotainment became unresponsive or completely shut down eight times during the review! ) and still the reviewers feel the need to push VW up...Best thing for everyone is to take test drive and speak with friends for long term feedback if possible as..you can't trust the honesty of this guys

I tested the ID4 for 3 days and never once encountered the kind of issues this reviewer had with the infotainment system. Either the vehicle was pre-production or there was a technical problem and not smart enough to try to fix it, preferring to show us an infotainment system that is unresponsive and lagging unacceptably.

Fix the restless ride quality (which is clear even from the front on exterior shots while driving) and of the two I would take the Ford. Exterior looks more interesting, interior looks better to my eyes too and range is similar whilst having more performance. Overall though I probably wouldn't buy either!

The ID4 exterior looks much better, IMHO - especially in these configurations, with 20 inch wheels on the ID4 and 18 inch wheels on the Mach-E. I don´t understand the hype regarding the design of the Mach-E. I´m not a fan of those "stuck on screens" that the ID4 has, but that enormous, standing "computer screen" in the Mach-E looks ridiculous.

@@Garconbleu Mainly range and control panel. But also the slightly sporty handling (it remains an SUV ;-) These are elements I still like in my current model S and didn’t really find it in other EV’s (so far, also not the Enyaq).

Sounds like a well balanced review, I liked the analysis. Some of the on screen comparison stats would be easier to review if side by side on screen. I would prefer an ID4 VW, before I saw the review - however, the infotainment and steering wheel buttons turned me right off. I wouldn't go for the Mach E because its a Mustang badge (better pedigree would have been Ford I think) and its just too expensive for the range it gives, I'd rather go for the EV6 Kia (Ok, one might have argued Kia vs Mustang but I think Kia has broken through that now). Of course (?), Tesla would be my number one still for an EV but the shapes are boring now. So, come on VW - "Can do better" on the report card for this one

Have you tried one? I thought the same way before I tested it for three days to tell myself that in the end, I do not understand at all what the journalists have to make a big deal out of the infotainment system. After driving the ID4 and the Mach-e, smoothness is much more important to me and the Mach-e suspension is a deal breaker in my case.

Oh no, i was hoping the Mach-E did not have the classic Ford suspension that makes it feel slightly like being on a boat, this will be a deal breaker for me if i feel the same when i try one. I generally love VWs handling, but i can't see myself living with their software, capacitive buttons and no stereo upgrade. I feel the GTX model is super silly too, it should just have been an AWD upgrade option

Well, I test drove these two, the Enyaq and the EV6. For me the id4 won it. It just felt right for me. Yes I was a little concerned on range even with the bigger battery, the Enyaq was great and had bits I preferred (like buttons) but the id4. £ for £ felt a better deal and the drive feeling was better. (The EV6, ok but not big enough of a boot and you can't fit a roof rack to it). I agree the infotainment isn't the best but the others weren't spot on either. Hopefully they can bring more upgrades to the software and it just works. As for 1 pedal breaking - the id4 does have it - it just doesn't physically stop (2 to 3 mph). Then you have rest your foot on the pedal - it does it for me! - now just the wait to get one.

Biggest problem is standard Mach-E has too little range, but Ford charge £9000 for an extra 24kWh long range battery. Its too much.

The Mach E looks better, has better quality materials, but I HATE how poorly integrated the main display is and the gimmicky door handles. Seriously, it looks like at the last step of the manufacturing process they realized they forgot the display and had to tack in onto a normal dash while the assembly line was still rolling. Just awful. And why can't EVs use normal door handles and actual dials and switches? Function should come before aesthetics or a "need" to be different. Why replace things that have worked for a century for no tangible gain?

Dont mind the capacative buttons on the steering wheel. Got used to them real quick, and never accidentally press one. The sliders below the screen though, and especially having no backlight is really annoying. Tested both cars. Bought the ID.4 and very happy with it.

Totally agree. We have an Cupra Formentor which also has the VW MIB. The worst infotainment system ever. Slow , bad ergonimcs and crashing very often. The next car will be no VW company car if they dont change the MIB, the system is a complete katastrophe and if possible, i would return the very good Formentor because of that shitty system.

Ford is priced a little too high in uk but that ride quality sounds like it would be a deal breaker - tho I like a lot about the ford, that interior is very well done. Despite what the reviewer said, ford gets closer for me but needs an update or two. VW needs to fire their interior designer and start again, the steering wheel is some sort of torture device and the climate/infotainment is shockingly bad. Vw also hasn’t judged the power delivery/range/battery situation in the best way in my opinion, it needs a little more power to be useful. Hyundai/Kia twins may end up being the better choice, tho they need a little bit of time to be fairly judged because initial Mach e reviews were glowing.

Both cars appear compromised but still better then a petrol or diesel alternative. I will stick with my Model 3 thanks 😊

I agree these two cars are not futuristic in fact the VW is typical SUV blob and that infotainment system looks cheap and plastic looking and any review I have seen on KZbin says it is unresponsive, slow and just a pain to use. I think it is terrible that these two major car manufacturers have come out with these two poor specimens of electric cars when Tesla have hit the ground running with superb designs. I don’t have a Tesla and probably will never own one but I can appreciate what they done in revolutionising the car market

Looks wise inside and out mach e. I need to drive them both though. Pity neither has a heat pump which would improve efficiency and range. Shame on you both ford and vw!

With these battery sizes and motor outputs, a heat pump is no longer necessary and the gain in efficiency is minimal. A heat pump makes more sense for cars with low power and a small battery. Also, for the power and weight, the Mach E is already really efficient, allthoug its not as good as a Tesla.

Out of those 2 I'd buy the Skoda Enyaq. I still think of you're in the market for a £40k ish SUV EV, wait for the Korean's. The Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 look better than both of the cars tested. I wouldn't buy the Mustang or ID4 with my own money.

Agree completely with this comment. I have already ordered the Hyundai IONIQ 5 after looking at both these models and deciding that the IONIQ 5 was superior to both.

@@ChrisdyMD I love the styling of the Ioniq. Wish I had the money to get in one. I think it’s gonna be a brilliant car. The Kona was one of the best car’s I’ve ever owned (even with the battery problems), and the Ioniq 5 moves the game on in a big way. Given it’s come out at roughly the same time as the Mustang and ID4, it really show’s how far ahead the Koreans are.

@@yiwang2119 i have used comma open pilot in camry for 10k+ miles..id4 travel assist is far better than open pilot..atleast equal to tesla level 2 auto pilot..but lane change we have to do..but smooth slow down when another car changing into our lane..braking and acceleration is smooth…

In terms of range, price and the ride itself (comfort, noise etc) they are already pretty good. Just the infotainment is shitty but thats not really a dealbreaker.

If you look at the latest ford sales report. Ford had produced 34K Mach-e. The have only sold 13K. The mach -e is not selling well with over 20K in inventory.

I don't know how you're driving the ID.4, after 1,500 miles I'm truly getting 290-300miles out of the battery. Right now I have 80% and 235m range - had 100% this morning and did 60 miles today (60% of which motorway)!

Really looking forward to owning an electric car someday, but these two offerings seem like big compromises on range. On a road trip I can get nearly 500 miles with my little Corolla if I drive conservatively.

Recharge technology has to be revolutionised, I know there are breakthroughs in labs with aligning electrons using innovative techniques to allow recharging in minutes rather than hours but it is years away as it would require all new public chargers too. As it is, even if your Corolla could only do 250 miles, it only takes a few minutes to turn that into 500.

And how many times do you stop and for how long on a 500 mile trip? A couple of times for 20-30 minutes when you could easily load another 300 miles charge? The ID.4 will get you there easily.
