Driven Car Reviews With Tom Voelk

Let’s get past the Mustang name controversy and address the big question- How easy is the Ford Mach-E to live with. Turns out, the Blue Oval folks pretty much nailed it. Tom Voelk spends a week in a standard range 66kW Premium AWD model. It’s the one with the shortest amount of range, 211 miles according to the EPA. How does it work in the real world? Is charging easy and quick? Can it handle family duty? All of these questions are answered, plus a look at the FordPass Charging Network and the Sync 4A interface. If you have more questions, ask in the comments.
Here’s a link to a calculator that gives you an idea of EV cost savings- evcompare.io/charging-calcula...

My wife and I bought a Prius in 2006. Great car until we found out the inverters cost 7 thousand to replace and the battery pack cost 5 thousand to replace, and both wore out after 6 or 7 years. Not to mention the car couldn't go up steep inclines in Colorado. We learned a lesson. Wait until the early adopters have allowed tech companies to perfect the technology. I'll be excited to buy a used electric car ... 10 years from now.

Tom's reviews are consistently among the best written I've ever seen. They're very well written, presented conversationally, and focused on what people care about. So many people do a "walkaround" and spend almost no time on the one thing you really want to know -- What's it like to drive? Looks like a nice car. I'm not thrilled with the center display. I keep expecting the camera to pan around behind it and show the Velcro holding it to the dash.

I understand why Ford named this the Mustang. It's free advertising with so many people up in arms about it, and it keeps people talking about it; seems like a pretty good strategy. I agree that very few us actually need a car with huge range. Really, 200-300 miles is far more than enough for 99% of days. The issue is that 1%. Whether because of family emergencies or weather events, I've had 4-5 events in the last several years where I really needed to be able to get to somewhere 300-400 miles away as quickly as possible. Even more than range, I think the big bottleneck is infrastructure. As Tom said, right now EVs only really make sense if you can charge at home, which many of us can't. Only about 30% of those between 24-39 (aka Millennials) own a home. That number is not likely to grow all that quickly considering the lack of housing stock and the debt ratio many Millennials carry. I'm really looking for EV charging infrastructure on par with gas stations before I get one. None of the issues Tom showcased with charging have ever occurred to me with gas stations.

A distant 2nd when compared with a Tesla model Y. Tesla has superior engineering, frequent free OTA updates (every 2-4) weeks), massive SuperCharging network growing weekly (tesla dot com/supercharger), also Tesla mobile network comes to your home or workplace for repairs or service issue or on the road.
@youraveragebreakfastcereal5285
@youraveragebreakfastcereal5285 Жыл бұрын
@@Chainyanker007 basically everything you listed was ancillary and non-vehicle related. Relevant to ownership experience, sure, but to say "distant" is opinion and exaggerated, imo. If you're going long distances and/or can't charge at home, then buy a Tesla all day because that SC network is unrivaled, absolutely and the 3rd party networks are 3rd rate, at best. If you charge at home and use the car for moderate commutes you're fine either way. I cross shopped the MME and MY, but opted for MME knowing the Tesla had better range and efficiency, but build quality with Tesla scares me a bit even though they've come a long way in recent years. Ultimately I wanted a car with an electric power train and Teslas feel more like a battery box with wheels, but that's purely opinion. What one person values might be meaningless to another, and vice versa, you just have to have enough sense to figure out what suits you best.

Great review. If I were to win the lottery, I would buy one of the homes I see in your drive by shots :) In 2019, I sold my BMW 2007 Z4 coupe, and my 1991 Corvette ZR-1, and bought a 2017 BMW I3 Rex. (downsizing) It has most of the options, and the original list price was 58,000 Euros, but we paid only 50% of that. Great used car, but too much deprecation if you buy new. I have had to use the Rex function about three times. We wanted a Rex to have a safety net whenever we travel further from home. The charging stations here in Germany still need some work. On our trips, we have found quite a few chargers that are inoperable. The building we live in is several hundred years old, so no indoor parking. The city parking garage has added three short term spots with a charger, and three spots that can be rented. I have to pay 0.26 Euro cents per kwh, not cheap, but still 1/3 the cost of using my Z4 to commute.

I like this car better than Tesla but the Bolt is more my speed since I don’t work and don’t drive much. But whatever I decide it will be electric.

The Bolt isn't a horrible EV, its a decent start, the updated Bolt is far better than the original.. Tesla's first EV wasn't a huge seller. BMW's first EV is ground breaking and hopefully they will develop it and or offer more Innovations in future EVs.. Right now buyers are so juvenile and immature when it comes to EVs (mine is better than yours), my EV charges at 100kw and yours charges at 50kw, mine has 250 miles of range and yours has 100, mine does 4 miles per kilowatts and yours does 3... There will always be a better technologies EV coming because the tech changes quickly just like in cell phones.. Sadly, the Ford Mach-e is two years behind the lastest from Tesla and Hyundai ioniq 5.

I don't think Ford "waited" for anything. Ford has been dragging its feet and final had to come up with something, anything to make itself relevant thus the Mustang label. It's adequate but disappointing in that it doesn't beat its rivals in any performance category - again, that's why they chose to recycle the Mustang name. In all I give it a "meh" grade.

I like this review. However, people complain about the many menu options in the car. What they forget (as a previous Ford Car Salesman) that many of the Sync features can, and should be, controlled with your voice. I test drove a MME while I am waiting for mine and was able to voice control the radio, navigation, and climate controls with the voice button on the steering wheel without taking my hands off the wheel. Just takes some time learning the speech commands.
@dmandman9
@dmandman9 2 жыл бұрын
In reality, most people only do their basic favorite things with their Sync anyway and seldom use its full capabilities. So once they set it, that’s where it stays. Most customers pair their phones, and use the audio, climate control, and navigation and call it a day. As long as those items are readily available, they’re happy. Lol.

Hi Tom, love your practical (and slightly sassy) videos! I placed an order for a red AWD premium last month but I'm struggling to decide if it's worth bumping up to the expanded battery. I've got a 90 mile round trip to Seattle as my commute, so the standard range would handle day-to-day but don't know how much battery degradation will play into it as I intend to keep it for many years.

An EV with matching HP to an ICE, the ICE will always lose the pep battle. EV's are great, but you have to make sure the EV lifestyle works for you, there are some considerations to make. Good review. Good to point out that for most people who live in cities or suburbs (where most people live) that range doesn't really matter as much as you think it does. don't believe me? go to the "A Better Route Planner" website (yes there is also an app) and select the EV you are considering then enter the last out of town trip you took. The site calculates your most efficient route with when and where to charge. You will notice that it never recommends charging to 100% since you want to arrive at the next charger with maybe 10% left. This gets you the best charging speed and the shortest time waiting. It takes a bit to wrap your head around it if you are used to "fill 'er up!" but this is how pilots fuel their planes. Carrying extra fuel (or charge) is wasteful of both time and energy. You get used to it. Ford called it Mustang so people would pay attention and know it's not just another Tesla wannabe.

I would have branded this car as Pegasus Mach-E. Then would have used the Mustang Pony Symbol and slapped some wings on it. This would have been a progression or evolution of the Mustang brand, symbolizing a transformation to a new and superior tech (someday anyway). Thus still having heritage born of the Mustang, but without disrespecting the legacy brand. Picture, the Mustang taking flight. I have owned Mustangs and love the cars. The Mach-E is a cool car in and of itself and when the GT comes out, would consider buying it, but it will never be a Mustang in my mind.
