Massive thanks to Kremer, QoR and A Gallo for sending me their precious samples of YInMn Blue. I feel very fortunately to be able to share not one but THREE YInMn blues in one video!
Let's take a look at them in my full swatches, covering mass tone, gradation, how it behaves on different kinds of paper, opacity, lift, staining, reaction to gauze, reaction to salt, reaction to drops of water and how it mixes with other colors.

It is a beautiful blue, I admit. But if I bought it and went to activate it a year later (because honestly, that's how watercolor paint purchases go) and it was an insoluble block, I don't know which emotion I would land on. Or all at once. I wouldn't want to be the company who offered it though, that's certain.

This was very interesting. If/should Qor make it available I would purchase it from them. For its uniqueness, for certain, but also because I love the way Qor behaves and it is a beautiful shade of blue with quite interesting granulation. There are some small watercolor makers who have it available but cost is a factor for them as well. As you said, should it become more popular in “industrial” uses hopefully savings would trickle down to us lowly pigment nerds, lol. 🌺

I was lucky enough to buy three tubes of QoR's YInMn when they released their R&D(?) batch. It's important to note that QoR does not mix predictably with other brands (by virtue of their... Aquazol binder was it?) - but it's not a huge problem. The hue is BEAUTIFUL for skies that aren't clear but aren't quite turbulent yet. It mixed some lovely violets with my M. Graham Quin Red (PR209)!

What does R&F batch mean? Is it possible to find it? What pigment is it??

R&D is just Research and Development. I can't remember the exact name of the particular branch that did it, but basically I presumably got three tubes from the same batch as Oto Kano.

The batch is done for now - it was a "one-off". However, the QoR sales rep I spoke with assured me that this was the only way to obtain this paint at all (which is clearly wrong - even Schmincke made a batch or two), so I would be surprised if they never made another batch of YInMn. The pigment is PB86 I believe.

Thank you very much for all that you do, especially for team pigment nerd! The comparison was very useful. I would definitely buy the Qor one if available, and I love the A. Gallo brand paints when I have the money to buy them. I think either of them would be wonderful to play around with, but I already have more blues than I need. Still desperately want this, though! :)

If QOR makes it available I'd pick that one for the texture. It's much more granulating than Cobalt Blue Deep (PB74).

Thanks for another beautiful blue video. 😍I love the A. Gallo and the Schmincke one and if QoR ever releases their version I might need that on, too. 😉I don´t like my Kremer colours as much, because mine tend to look a bit chalky after drying and to come of the paper when you touch it. 😕

I really cant wait to try this pigment. Just waiting for a "main" watercolor brand to make one for a reasonable price.

Thanks so much for the review. I jumped onto Jackson's to check the price of a half pan of A Gallo, over $50 Australian! I think I'll have to wait for a bit longer. Maybe I'll see if I can get a Crayola crayon set to try the colour. I know it's not watercolour, but I can dream.

Qor is definitely my favorite out of the three. For such a similar hue to other more widely available pigments, I would rather have that granulation. All three are lovely though!

Quite a pigment nerd too, but really cannot justify the cost of this pigment, wherever it comes from! Kremer do have some quirky issues from time to time, I had some gold pans from them that had the exact opposite problem, they were so runny that the first ones I received had half way run out of the pan. So I do think it is likely to be a binder issue and it not being fine tuned enough. Which is odd really because they manufacture a highly rated binder for the pigment nerds who like to make their own watercolours. This hardness issue is usually more associated with specific pigments, and also with gouache paints. The blue pigment should be recoverable, but who is going to do it! Such a shame because Kremer is my all time most favourite watercolour brand. I love the way the pigments retain their individual uniqueness. It is no better to buy the pigment and make your own, realistically it would cost more! If I could justify it, which I cannot, I would buy the A Gallo. Nice review as always.

I love PB74, but it usually dries rather pale and anyway Qor doesn’t have that pigment. YinMn Blue seems to be a very similar but more saturated blue. I would love to buy it from Qor. Hope they make it available very soon!

Thanks Oto! Does anyone know how ynmn blue compares to schmincke delft blue (PB60)? They seem very similar in hue to me but I don’t have neither so I wouldn’t know.

Love the level of granulation from Qor YInMn blue. Is there any other watercolour paint has similar texture? (Doesn’t have to be blue)

Hi! Thanks so much for this very informative video. If I may ask, what brand of cold press and hot press paper do you use? Are they 100% cotton?

Since you bought the YinMin blue from Kremer, and I think you said the color is expensive, I was wondering if you have contacted Kremer about the issue and what their response was? If there is an issue an no one tells them about it, how will they know?

Have you seen YInMn Blue by Schmincke? It's called Oregon Blue, I suppose. For where I am it's the only option for now, and I am tempted, but not sure, considering the price. Curious to see, how it compares with other, more luxurious maybe, brands like A Gallo .

I have the A Gallo and Schmincke versions. Haven’t played with them much but definitely plan on it. I’m 1000% a pigment nerd, definitely don’t have a need for it because I have a tube or two of ultramarine blue.

Hey. As someone having it irl, may I ask you, how's Schmincke version compare to another? Is it good enough to be usable? I'm trying to decide should I buy it or wait for another option.))

Thank you so much for this. I was wary because of other reviews of the Kremer, and I missed an opportunity to receive one of the QoR samples, but I have a lot of trust in A Gallo so ordered that one. Because I am a Pigment Nerd to the extreme, and that weird blue that only exists in the high pressure underneath the Earth's crust, for some reason isn't available from Jackson's (yet? :) ).

I love Gallo's. But why even discuss QoR considering they are not selling it. It's a moot point
@OhJodi69

Qor may very well sell this paint in the future. Especially since they seem to be sending samples out to gauge reaction to it. So why not include it in the comparison? If the response to their formula is positive, they're more likely to release it to retail.
