Great recap of 2023 ... an incredible amount of development. You are all such a hardworking team ... good luck with the awards! Rowena's disappearance was noted at our last visit ... she was one of my husband's favourites. Additional 35 acres ... wow, am so excited for the future ... 2024, bring it on 😊

Great to hear all the good news, and the plans for 2024. I wondered where Rowena had gone, I loved her character and intelligence. But - life is made of meetings and partings, and she must have been one of the most loved Ravens in the UK.

An article in the New York Times a few weeks ago: LEAF CUTTER ANTS TAKE ON MANHATTAN, by Emily Anthes. A new installation at the American Museum of Natural History. Interesting article!

Hi Maxine, Happy New Year. You all certainly got a lot done in 2023. Can't wait to see all of the alterations when we visit in May. Always sad to see that you have lost some of our animal friends but always good to see there are new ones arriving. Favourite moment of 2023 has to be finding out that the Livingstone bat has a baby. That has to be one success for the zoo. Good luck with the plans for 2024 and for the long term plans concerning the extra acres you have acquired.

Happy New Year to you all and thank you for this video. I have enjoyed watching the updates every week....one of the favourites was seeing Hog Springs from start to finish - and the guinea pigs. All the videos have been brilliant and informative. I was so sorry to hear about Rowena. As you say, losses like this go with the territory but I know it never stops being painful and some losses are incredibly difficult to bear. I hope 2024 is a great year for you and that you can see many of your plans fulfilled. Well done for all you do; I look forward to visiting later in the year.

I've lost count how many times we visited the zoo in 2023, it's always a fab day out. So sorry to hear of the losses, especially Rowena. I actually got to meet her on my zookeeper experience, she was a magnificent bird. ❤

Hi Maxine. I was watching another KZbinr and she was talking about how free she feels while biking. It reminded me about that 35 extra acres you have. While you were talking about it, I was thinking that a trail covering that distance would be to much walking for some people. If you could do a ride through it, when opened, it would be better. But back to the other video. I was thinking that if you could let it grow wild and put in a rambling bike trail through it, it would make your location a destination for bikers. Keep it open to the public without charge, and may be rent out bikes, it will bring in more people to the cafe. It will make use of the property until you decide what to do with it.

Well done for the award you got! Fingers crossed for other awards!! The little blue frogs were new in curious creatures too! You've done so much this year and it is lovely to see! Keep up the amazing work!! I was saying to my support worker on Tuesday who I came with I'd happily pop in just for a cheese pasty, it was nicest one I've ever had. As a member I understand having to wait for people to be booked in/pay/ask questions but I often visit on a time limit so being able to go straight through would be good. My highlight of the year was definitely my snow leopard experience! Lemur photo made me laugh 😂 You should try doing a video of animal asmr of them crunching their veggies/hay/feed

I don't know if it would be help to you but I was watching a Swedish video the other day - run by an engineer - and one of the things mentioned was the constant need to look for partners willing to be test subjects for new technology. Made me wonder if there are any universities (they are usually the ones looking to trial new ways of doing things) or other R&D groups who might be willing to help you with energy issues if you are willing to be a testing ground for new technology. Don't know if it applies in the UK but might possibly be worth putting out feelers, especially as the UK is making huge leaps and bounds in the field of alternative energy production. You never know, you might end up benefiting greatly if there are any groups looking to test new technology and trying to find someone willing to work with them. I would have thought you'd be great given you have a specific need and can be detailed in requirements, if it works for you then it is almost guaranteed to work in other circumstances elsewhere. Great video as always Have a great new year from Ireland.

Red seems to really like his new shed. I’m so sorry about all the lovely fur babies you lost last year. I had wondered where Rowena was 🖤 The baby bat!!! That’s my highlight! After watching a certain male regularly cosying up to a certain female…to suddenly find out they’ve made a baby…wow, so exciting, and what an achievement. I come to the zoo very frequently, and every time I visit, there’s something new and some big project going on. The scale of your progress and expansion is always incredible. Well done to you and all your family and team!!! I also so enjoy interacting with the parrots in their new home. It’s so much better, so that’s another personal highlight. Lots of places have separate “free” access cafes and shops, it’s a good idea. On a big scale, Yorkshire Wildlife Park have that whole big area full of shops, restaurants and entertainment areas (Hive, is it called?) that you can access without going into the animal park. It always seems a money spinner. For me, I just want to see the animals, but a lot of people seem to like to shop and eat, wherever they go!!!

Another amazing video as always Maxine! 😊 So sorry to hear about the losses, especially when they were special/notable animals like Rowena and Buster, but you're quite right, there can be no life without death. That's nature and life in the rawest form 🙂 I'm not 100% sold on the new entrance 🤔 I get why you're doing it (and Chester have a similar setup with their Elephants being free to view) but I'm not sure how how I feel about it and how much financial difference it makes in terms of bringing people into the zoo (paid) and additional income (food and drink sales) 🤔 Then again I'm not experienced in zoo management beyond video games so you're definitely the expert here 😂 Looking forward to what awaits in 2024 and beyond! I hope you and all the animals are keeping well! 😊
