My dad has one (2018) and this thing absolutely rips. 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, and virtually zero turbo lag when you step on it. BMW underrates their engines, when you look at dyno numbers this B58 makes 40-50 hp more than BMW claims.

@@kevinvelazquez5745 so far so good from what Ive heard. They also have a 2020 X5 40i with no problems. Before the 540, he had a 535 which he drove up to 90,000 miles with minimal issues.

Pay no attention to the "335hp" because they're VERY underrated. Mine dyno's 376hp stock.

Windshield wipers: you have it in auto , but you can set to the speed of them also with the dial in the middle of the stock. 23 x3M40i owner here.

Rears are 275. 540i is uses the infamous B58 engine. The closed shell design and forged big end makes it able to take significant tuning. A stage 1 keeping everything stock, on standard unleaded (91 octane), will take it to around 440 bhp. Gearbox is good for up to around 650bhp

@@duggiefresh8170 it depends. If it isn't drivetrain, it won't be a problem. Even if it is drivetrain, it also depends on what happens. A stage 1 DME tune, where everything else is stock, isn't actually putting that much additional stress on the engine. The same B58 is put into cars like the Toyota Supra, with essentially a bigger turbo, making similar power. The engine is very capable of taking significant tuning. Of course, if you fry the DME by a botched flash, then you'll pay for that. The ZFHP8 gearbox monitors line pressure and protects itself by limiting max torque. Some people also increase these limits. I haven't. A ZF gearbox specialist in the UK, that can upgrade internal to increase max torque, has confirmed a stage 1 tune doesn't get anywhere near the level that they would advise this upgrade - they advise when the engine is producing around 650bhp.

@@duggiefresh8170 that all said, personally haven't flashed the DME (turned) until the car is getting to end of warranty period. I flashed a 2018 G30 520d summer last year, before upgrading to the 540 this year. I've owned BMWs for past 10yrs and stage 1 tuned all of them. Never had a problem. Same adage applies whatever the car or state of tune - no mechanical sympathy means it will wear out/break sooner. For instance, always do at least 6 miles to allow oil temps to come up before going anywhere near the red line. If I've been ragging it, leave a few miles to allow it to cool before switching off etc.

The vast majority of owners don't need an M car and the M cars get too much review coverage. Instead of worrying about how much power the 540i has (99% of humanity is satisfied it has more than enough and other reviewers like SavageGeese and Everyday Driver have beaten this dead horse over and over), why not cover something not frequently discussed? In small towns without street lights (or growing cities with roads that have no street lights, like Reno), or windy mountain roads, discuss essential technology to keep you safe while you are flooring the accelerator on your 540i. Adaptive LED headlights swivel as you turn, with a trench light on each side turning on and off on the inside of the turn. LED headlights are brighter than bi-Xenons and halogens; we hope laser light is coming soon. Talk about the Heads-Up Display (originally developed for fighter jets and now used in airliners) and Navigation System which goes to the HUD and makes driving safer by not making you turn your eyes away from the windshield. Another BMW factory option right now is infra-red Night Vision, which can be a lifesaver in the situations I'm talking about. BMW's system is a direct descendent of the Grumman F-14D Super Tomcat's infra-red spot and track system. In automotive use it can flag a bicycle. a jaywalker or an animal, like a deer, and help you avoid a collision. It can tell you that an oncoming vehicle is a car with a burned-out headlight, not a motorcycle, long before the headlights do. A 3,000 pound animal can turn your 540i into junk pretty quickly. I believe the Night Vision system can be projected onto the HUD as well. Night Vision can be used just like a mirror - you scan your mirrors as you drive, including the Night Vision. If you are about to run over a pedestrian or bike, it will alert you and tell you where it is. (Night Vision is not good in city centers or in busy parking lots where it will alert because of all thepeople around and a heavy rainfall can degrade its performance). Do a test drive in the conditions I've outlines and post a video about those technologies.

If you can tune the B58 in the 540i to get it closer or beyond the tune of that same engine in the M340i, add the M sport options, I would say the 540i would be far better package.

Overall in bmw lineup, the 540i is best all around. And it can be tuned, there are people pushing near 500hp on a 540i

Comparing the M550i and M340i would be interesting. Price gap obviously but you can get a slightly used M550i for the same price as a new M340i

Both the 530 and the 540 are outstanding cars. Even better with X-Drive. They are the best of all worlds. Both are very quick. Enjoyable to drive. Absolutely gorgeous. And very hand with a lot of space and large cargo area (and fold down seats). Added bonus, they both get outstanding MPG. Both will get over 30 MPG on the highway at speed. Great engines as well. Very reliable workhorses.

Just got a 530 2021 pre owned and after pushing it on city roads don’t understand why one would need more power unless you are on a race track. With current track record and a few thousand miles on it it’s a steal at 40k. I think the extended warranty was an overkill as I don’t see anything happening to this solid and comfy sedan for 5 years. BMW does the idrive to perfection and with voice commands it’s an almost button free operator. One has to drive it to see the diff between a Mercedes E series, Lexus GS or a Porsche 911. At 28mpg I think it brings you best of both worlds at a reasonable price.

Nice review. The car looks nice but is a little bland overall. I am NOT a fan of the new trend of machined faced wheels. I like regular spoke type wheels. If I got one of these, I'd get the all black wheels. I do like the interior colors of your review car.

The new 2024 5 series in the 540 will receive the updated B58 engine and HP should be the same as the M340. Possibly called a M540. M550 becomes a M560 for 2024 5 series.

@@duggiefresh8170 it’s really common knowledge to me. From sources that I read and heard. The 2023 740 sedan and the X7 40i allready got the bumped up hp on the 40i engine or B58 engine for 2023. 5 series is an all new car for 2024 model year and that will get the bumped up hp numbers on the 540. 550 will become M560.

@@duggiefresh8170 haha the dealer told you they don’t know what?? Can you be more specific. The 2024 5 series is going to be all new and available Q4 of 2023. That is a fact. If a dealer tells you they don’t know that it is because they are just dumb or because they want to sell you the 23’s. The 5 series is always a new model one year behind the 7 series. 7 series was all new for 23. 5 series received and LCI or life cycle impulse for 2021 model year when it was half way through its life. I know a lot about bmws. Also I own a 2021 540i and I’m a member of BMW CCA club.

5 series all day over 3 series unless I was considering a convertible then the 4 series... I'm actually shopping now and considering this very car, coming out of an Avalon which is much larger this feels small... I'm also shopping the x5 and Volvo xc90 thus far I'm liking the xc90 but I'm a big bmw fan... more room is better for me

My family has an X5 and a 5, both with the 40i powertrain. No real complaints here. The X5 is pretty cramped in the back seat for adults, and the cargo room could be bigger for how large of a vehicle it is. I also really like the xc90 but it’s nowhere near as quick as the X5 if that matters.

Avoid the XC90! Way over rated, lots of electrical issues and the 4 cylinder engine is pathetic. My manager just had a $3600 repair for parts and labor to replace his AC condenser and the vehicle is only 5 years old with 43K miles but out of warranty.

Next to the rest of the BMW lineup the now old 5-Series looks downright tame, if slightly dated. Lets say classic. Get the V8 M550i while you can as it isn't guaranteed for the next generation.

550 engine has a lot of problems once it racks up miles. They are replacing it for 2024 model with a new v8 called M560 which is now in the 760 and x7m. The 540 is super reliable even more than the 530.

@@djg1028 It’s not a clean sheet redesign. It’s the same engine with some changes like it’s been for over a decade now. My 2015 650i V8 was troublesome at first but was fine after certain things were addressed under warranty.
