2023 BMW XM review - What was BMW thinking?

Ah, the BMW XM, the first dedicated Motorsport model since the M1. I've driven it and it's by no means bad for what it is, but it's neither the bespoke M model that we wanted nor the one that we deserved. It's really more of an M Performance X8 with an unusual name to make it seem like a special model and an X5M is quicker and offers a better driving experience. And it's ridiculously expensive. I will say that it looks much better in the metal than in photos, but that's probably the highest compliment I can pay it. Oh, and my tester had a very special feeling interior with great materials and colors.

It was not meant to be a successor to the M1. If it was meant to be that, they would have built a supercar. They built a car where they thought they had a gap in the line-up which is a top of the range sporty luxury practical SUV to compete with something like the G Wagon. I think they successfully accomplished that. I’ve had it for 2 weeks now and it’s got a lot of attention, most positive. It’s not perfect and not including an air suspension was a big miss but it’s exactly the car I wanted from BMW. It’s almost as luxurious as a 7 series and my XM label with a 0-60mph of around 3.2s is quicker than almost every BMW M car in the range. Drive the Label and then tell me what you think!

Thanks for sharing! I'd love to have a go in the Label at some point, although for me it's not extra power that it needed. And I know it's not meant as an actual successor to the M1, but they did put the two BMW roundels in the rear glass to specifically symbolize there's some kind of connection between these two cars. I liked the XM overall, but since I'm not so extroverted, and I don't like the attention this brings, I'd go for a black X5M instead.

@@OneTireFire The Label doesn’t just have additional power. BMW have tuned the suspension and the transition between electric/gas power trains. It’s just overall a much more refined drive. I get the point with the looks. It’s definitely an extroverts car for sure.

@@warrenber Oh, I didn't know the suspension tuning made it feel so different. I am more intrigued now after reading this.
