2023 Cabrinha Contra VS 2006 Cabrinha Contra

What a huge difference! This was a fun one to compare a 2023 Cabrinha Contra 15m with a 2006 Cabrinha Contra 14m. The differences are so astronomically big. If anyone in the Tampa area wants to try either out, drop us a comment below!

Thanks Anthony, It will be trial and error, incremental changes in the general direction of the newer design. How far it can be pushed is the question. From what you are telling me about the canopy and bridle design, it may not be much. Thank for your advice!

Hi Anthony, Basic information (description or picture) on how the 2023 bridle is setup would be most helpful. Does the rear line tie to the tip? Do the front bridles have any pullies in the cascade and where? I agree with you, any dimensions would be useless. The bridle on the old CONTRAs had a pulley on the rear line, linking it to the forward bridles. Though this would make for very smooth changes to the canopy, you would not get much depower and you would need to pull a lot on the rear lines for control. Hence the 2:1 bar and heavy bar pressure. Apart from deleting 4 big struts for weight, changing the bridle will be essential for better depower and control. It would be interesting to document the entire evolution of this very successful and popular kite to better understand the differences you so eloquently illustrated in your video. This will be an interesting project. If it is successful, I would like send the kite to you for your review, since you are most familiar with both. Thanks! Paul

Hi Anthony, Fabulous video. Most helpful for me who just picked up a brand new Contra 14 from 2008! Looks identical to the 2006 design that you tested (7 strut, 2:1 spider bar renowned for high bar pressure) I bought it (almost free) with the intent to modify it, taking out 4 big struts (weight!), changing the coning (darts), correcting TE scallop, completely revising the bridle (that 1:2 pulley on the outer bridle!), std bar, IKO approved safety ;-) HA! Any advise about the bridle of the new Contra would be most helpful. Will need more responsiveness, that is for sure. Many thanks, Paul.

Thats a big project! Even if you get the exact dimensions on the new bridle, the positioning of the bridle on the LE is going to impact performance. You're going to need a lot of different attachment points on the LE because its going to be a lot of trial and error to get a certain feel. Are you using any sort of software to help you redesign it? Essentially it sounds like you're attempting a complete redesign. The shape of the kite is very different than more modern ones so the amount of canopy on a certain position is going to be different as well. Goodluck! interested in how it goes
