Chevy is bringing out a brand new midsize pickup this year in the 2023 Colorado and we had a chance to sample many of its flavours. We took a Trail Boss and Z71 off-road while also going for a quick run in the Work Truck to see what the base model is like.
The all-new 2023 Chevy Colorado offers only one engine with three different outputs, while the new Trail Boss model brings an affordable off-roader to the table.
Get all our thoughts on the new 2023 Chevrolet Colorado in the video!

These are some of the best styled trucks GM has had in years. Yes, the front end is sort of complicated/busy, but this is now true with a lot of trucks. This one definitely looks aggressive, but it ties and binds into the overall design very well. If I hadn't already gotten a build date for a Maverick I've had on order, I'd have considered ordering one of these.

I would still like to have a light switch. Many times in fog or snow that the lights don’t come on automatically because the sensor thinks it’s light but you want to manually turn on the lights. Don’t want to be fiddling around with a menu to turn them on.

Only reason I've ever touched the light knob was to turn the lights off then on to see if the lights were on. You're right about the exterior lines. So many lines. With the grill being so high, it makes the truck look tall and narrow with a high centre of gravity

The only problem I have with the light control is I never drive anywhere without at least having the running lights on. Not the daytime running lights, because I like having lights on the back of the vehicle on too. It would only mean I'd have to turn the lights fully on when I drive in the dark so it's not that bad.

You can upgrade your Turbo Plus engine to the High Output (with just a tune) as an option, even if your truck is delivered as a Turbo Plus, because they have the same internals. And you can "check the block" on an order for a WT for the High Output, but for the base engine some of the internals are different and Chevy won't flash that ECU and give it a warranty. Although I'm more than sure the aftermarket already has figured out a way get a LOT out of it. They're built crazy strong
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP Жыл бұрын
I think people are still figuring out the newer ECUs on these GM trucks. Remember seeing there wasnt much out there for the prior 2.7, 5.3 etc just due to tuners having a hard time unlocking the ECU.
@JasonYergin
@JasonYergin Жыл бұрын
@@ALMX5DP that makes sense. If it was a performance vehicles they'd have already done it. And for anybody reading this a little down the road it may be all sorted out but at the time of this post you're probably right.
@ALMX5DP

@@JasonYergin totally I hope it’s figured out. Heard great things about the 2.7 and while I’m not a huge advocate for tuning these modern boosted engines to the limit it would still be cool to see people push them and improve performance. I think the aftermarket does influence OEM design and development in that way being kinda like guinea pigs so that manufacturers know where to focus their energy on for future iterations.
@JasonYergin
@JasonYergin Жыл бұрын
@@ALMX5DP that’s true too. If it was mine there’s no way I would do more than just a light tune on it. But every video I watched on these indicates they are built like diesels so hopefully that speaks to their longevity, only time will tell, but I hope they last a really long time.

I have a Colorado on order Z71. Ordered over the Trail Boss to get the heated seats, sun roof and up level interior. I thought that the Z71 had a lift kit above the work truck? What would the increased torque from the standard Z71 to the HO give me? My truck probably will never go off road. Thought your review was very interesting and gave a lot of pros and cons. I did have a 2017 ZR2 which I traded for 2020 Ram Larimie crew cab. Ram turned out to be great vehicle on the road but just too big. Looking forward to the Z71.

It will be interesting to see the mileage difference between base engine and the higher output engines. I have watched all the new midsized GM reviews and feel like I would go with a regular cab GM full size for the extra room and capability for the same price.
@tomm1109
@tomm1109 Жыл бұрын
Their was a leaked memo that showed the rating as 19/24 for the + and HO and 19/25 for the base engine. Personally, I don't want a full size even if the price is the same. Where I park at my house it is easier to park a mid-size. In general it is just easier to live with. If I have to make two trips to home depot once or twice to carry more stuff it is not a big deal.
@jhagen4850
@jhagen4850 Жыл бұрын
If you look at 9:59 you'll see mileage on dash is 17.4MPG. Even if you give back a few MPG for it being driven hard and possibly idling a long time, that's not a great number. In another video with the Z71 I saw 14.5MPG with 250 miles on the trip odometer. So you're probably looking at terrible gas mileage with the work truck and Ford Raptor fuel economy with the high output 4 cylinder. But hey, it has good emissions so who cares how much fuel you burn?

The 4runner sells because its a 4runner and has a cult following. There’s a reason everyone else left that space, no other vehicles like that sold well ya genius. The entire reason ppl want a 4runner is because its a proven design with minimal changes (old as dirt in your words). You basically want to change everything that makes a 4runner a 4runner and expect it to sell well. Good thing you don’t work for GM, you’d make them bankrupt again 🤡🤡

For me the Colorado has gone from irrelevant to a midsize benchmark. Love that 2023 is “the year of the midsize pickup.” Looking forward to seeing how the new Colorado, new Ranger, and new Tacoma compare. In addition, the new for 2022 Frontier is a fine truck. For that matter, the Ridgeline will actually win many midsize truck tests (eliminating off-roading or max towing as variables). Very impressed with the Colorado. We plan on buying at the end of 2024. So for my partner and I, having off road capability for parks and skiing etc is great, but swapping that 2in loft for the extra comfort and features is worth it to us. I love the look, the interior and tech features in the Z71, but the price tag 🏷️ and off road capability for a guy with a limited budget who loves to hunt and fish 🎣, kayak and camp 🏕️ has me leaning toward the Trail Boss. The lease on my 2020 Silverado LTZ 6.2L ends in 2 months, right around the time the Colorado ZR2 starts production. I also have a 2021 Blazer RS with a year left on the lease, so call that a "buffer vehicle". That being said, I've already submitted my order for a 2023 Colorado ZR2, loaded, Glacier Blue, but not going for the Desert Boss edition since it'll definitely come with dealer markups (and honestly, not a fan of the rear roll bar setup anyway. I can always add the Safari Bar after the fact). I was on the fence on the 2.7L, for sure, dropping from the 6.2L, but my wife has a 2020 Colorado ZR2 and it's plenty quick enough, so the same HP coupled with the 430 lb./ft torque (just shy of the 6.2L torque) should be plenty powerful. I'll just need to get used to not having that V8 sound and at least some turbo lag. The only other thing I'll miss from my current Silverado LTZ Z71 is the fact I have a HUD and the Colorado ZR2 doesn't, but the new GMC Canyon AT4X & Denali have it, but really, I'm not going to spend an additional $10,000 on the GMC just to get it. Chevy will probably add it to the 2024 model year for a $1k or $2k upgrade package, but the HUD in the Canyon is only 6 inches, vs the current full size truck HUD of 15 inches, so really comes down to preference of how bad you really want it. My opinion is that I don't need to spend that much money to avoid looking down a few inches, but obviously, to each their own. I really like your content, reviews and trust your information. I compare yours to several others in order to get the "full picture", but love your "real world" interpretation of your reviews; something other content providers I watch sometimes overlook. Keep up the great content!

I do occasional "truck stuff" with my truck, no long box no sale. I am gonna hang onto my '17 Canyon crew cab long box until the end of time 😆 "Turbo lag" was mentioned during the video. Modern turbos don't "lag". The reason there is a pause when the driver romps on the gas is tuning in the ECM to limit the onset of torque and emissions during big throttle inputs. Aftermarket tuning can bet rid of both, but modern ECMs are locked down and even if they aren't the EPA is watching. I have no doubt that without the OEM tuning limitations, the 2.7 is capable of legit stupidity in this truck. It is a pity that responsive capability will never see the light of day for most owners.

I don't understand why they make the drive mode selection knob so up front, it's not like you're changing driving modes all the time, no need for it to take up half the space in the center console like that.

Yea the knob isn't necessarily. A button would have worked fine.

What they should have done with all the extra space where the headlight knob was is put the trailer brake controller there. And a physical fog switch......

It looks great..best looking smaller truck by far...but it does look a little busy in flat black...it needs the color contrast to balance it out. Wish it came in an extended cab...dont like a crewcab in small pickup...may as well get a midsize SUV with a 5 foot bed

Been waiting for this review for months! Great job guys!! And you get to enjoy the Sunny South ! Sounds like overall, you weren't in love with the engines and driving experience, but appreciated the updates and the Features. I personally like the new styling . I also think the new interior looks better than the Nissan Frontier. But if I were to guess, I think the Frontiers engine and cabin sound deadening are better than the new GM twins. I guess we'll have to see what happens when you put a trailer on the back, throw it through the mud and the hydroline and see how it stacks up. Now we have to wait for the new Ranger and Tacoma. Can't wait for your next in-depth reviews

I prefer the Trail Boss. It will do anything I do. Most of my driving is on paved roads. Also not paying that much for a vehicle to take out in the woods tearing it up. Most of that stuff on the screen is just fluff that you won't actually use day to day. Just something to play with the first few days and nothing else.

My wife and I are the owners of a 2021 GMC Canyon Elevation 2WD crew cab with the 2.8L Duramax and for us, this new generation has missed the mark. Of course, we're not your typical buyers (how many other Canadians ordered a base model, diesel truck with 2WD?). We specifically ordered this truck based on my wife's experience as a GM Factory Technician and by 2021 the truck was entering its 10th model year so GM had sorted it out and the overall platform was solid and reliable (other than some major reliability issues with the 3.6L V6 and 8-speed automatic transmission). I'm sure objectively for most buyers this new truck is better in every measurable way and it hits the mark for what the majority of people are looking for in their trucks and because of that, GM will sell loads of them. For us, everything we love about our current truck is no longer available in this new package and we will not be trading in any time soon.

Could there be a truck queen or camping queen channel coming soon??? Lol! Im really liking the design of the new colorado, the only thing i dislike is the fact that theres only 1 engine with different power outputs. Does it really need more than 1 engine tho, no it doesnt. The trail boss power output is very nice though and even the step down with 390ft lbs is solid. Overall i think they did a great job on designing this to be an eye catcher and hopefully its a reliable powerplant. Check out tfl, they have a detailed video on the 2.7, and i do mean detailed with the engineer walking Andrey and us through everything

Very good redo of these midsizers.but one option which would really sway me is a 6’ bed. The Frontier and Tacoma still offer them and that gives me a much easier time loading kayaks right into the bed without having to use an overhead rack. I see plenty of Tacomas especially driving around with the 6’ bed so there must be a decent market for it.

Interestingly, during the W/T driving section it showed that you were getting 17.9 mpg. That's terrible for a 4 cyl. For the price I'd go for a Silverado with the 3.0L diesel instead. I'm surprised that they're calling it a 2023 in Feb 2023. I would've expected 2024 for sure.

For a truck thats only being used for testing that sounds pretty good. Lots of full throttle and idling. Think of that as the bottom mpg. If it was a V8 tester it would probably be 10-12.
@jhagen4850

I saw the same thing and canceled my Trail Boss order this morning. In another video the Z71 showed 14.5MPG. That's worse fuel economy than you're going to see in a F-150 or even the Nissan Frontier. When I drove a Nissan Frontier Pro 4X at the dealer the odometer said 18MPG, with a lot of idling and test driving for sure. So this thing is going to be thirstier than the previous generation.
@jhagen4850
@jhagen4850 Жыл бұрын
@@tomm1109 It has start-stop technology. Why would it be burning gas during idle? I think there's a reason why GM isn't talking about economy, mainly because it's going to backslide. This thing is 10" wider than the previous version and almost has the same drag profile as a full size truck. On top of that it's hundreds of pounds heavier than the previous version and some top level trims will be heavier than the base Silverado.
@matth3wc

@@jhagen4850 all the videos I saw, when they reviewed the interior had the engine running even though it was in park. They probably turned off auto stop/start. The truck is rated at 19-20 city and 25 highway. But if you are that concerned about mileage I'd say get a car or a Maverick hybrid...if you can get one. My friend gets about 30+ in that

Great video. Ok so help confirm for me. I love a mid size truck. It almost never snows here in NC. At most I will do some dirt rd driving. I will not be doing any major off rd. My thoughts are work truck with the computer upgrade for more power. I do have a small camper. I only drive like 5 miles to work all I need is a decent radio and cold ac. Please confirm that I can get the work truck with an upgrade on power.

Really disappointed they didn't keep the diesel option going for it. Better fuel economy and good torque towing, was a nice option to have, but with rising diesel costs and maintenance, I suppose it was inevitable to get the axe. Kind of odd they did a new model year without a hybrid version, I would have suspected one in the works with chev practically making an EV out of most of their vehicles coming up. No 6' bed also a disappointment, actually made it an option worth looking into above others.

Not feeling great about the lack of a headlight knob. It should at least be one touch to turn the lights on when in fog, whiteout, or heavy rain when auto won't do it for you. Now I have to fumble with essentially a tablet on the dash to turn my tail lights on, but if I touch my phone, I could have my license suspended...

Haven't heard the reason why they lengthened the wheelbase. I suspect it has something to do with crash tests. The last model was a little weak on offset crashes, so since they needed to beef up the frame anyway and moving the wheel forward helps prevent cab intrusion they made the change. They advertise it as better approach angle, but like you said it gives worse break-over and also you didn't mention, but the turning circle is probably bigger.
@jeremyjohnson6438
@jeremyjohnson6438 Жыл бұрын
They probably had a lot of engineering based reasons but a longer wheelbase has better stability on road and towing, can smooth out the ride, and it increases the cabin space. Awesome truck. Good on GM/Chevy

Towing sticker is on production vehicles today, so yes. My best guess is that there are so few configurations and different tow ratings on Colorado that they felt it unnecessary. But I think it's always helpful to provide more, clear info to customers.

How's the acceleration on the 310 HP/390 ftlb engine? You did an acceleration on the base, you should have done one on all of them. Great video as usual, I got to see these Trucks along with the Canyons @ the Chicago auto show and I'm very impressed with them!
