2023 F350 Super Duty 7.3 GODZILLA V8 - 1 Year/10k Mile Review

We have now had our 2023 Ford Super Duty F350 for a full year. We have put 10,000 miles on it with about a third of that being towing miles. We have towed a travel trailer, 5th wheel, and a loaded car hauler. The truck is a SRW Lariat with the crew cab and standard bed. In the review we go over what we have liked and what we should have done differently. I also answer the question on if I regret not getting the diesel. After owning a 2016 Powerstroke, I'll never own another modern diesel. The DPF system is an absolute nightmare, and maintenance costs are crazy. I traded it in for a 2022 Godzilla, it's been great so far, with plenty of power.

I bought a new 2020 F250 on March 2020 and was specifically looking for the 7.3 gasser. I had a 2001 F250 with the 6.8 V10 before, never had any issues with the truck (except MPG). My 7.3 gets better mileage towing (normally less than 10K lbs) than the V10 did empty. Only have about 10K on the truck at this point, i have 0 regrets. Everyone else I know are running diesels, but I believe the overall operating costs for how I use the truck, the Godzilla makes better financial sense as well. Love my truck..

Totally agree. The diesel is more capable and gets better mpg but for what I use it for just not justifiable considering the cost. And the 7.3 is still an awesome option.

Thank you for sharing! Do you also mind sharing what your loaded and unloaded mileage was with the 6.8 V10? I know it was a great engine and I'm always curious what people saw for mileage on those bad boys.

@@heathmcateer I have a bumper pull 20' equipment trailer. When towing around 9K (usually kept speed about 65 on the highways) the V10 would average between 8-9 MPG. Empty at 75 it would get 11-12. With the Godzilla towing the same weight and doing 70 on the same highway it gets about 12. Best it's done empty at 75 is 17 MPG. Hope this helps!

👍 nice review ! We ordered a ‘21 F350 SRW Lariat CCLB FX4 w/7.3L, 3:73 diffs for travel in retirement; really only use it for towing our 12k x 36’ 5th wheel. Love the truck for that purpose, 48gal tank provides great range. Have towed in the Rockies, plenty of power & stability; 10sp tran works fine in tow/haul, just took a little time for me to learn how best to use it.

Yeah I figured there are probably tricks for me to optimize what I'm doing when towing. I am a novice at towing (previously just utility trailers and small camper with a Tahoe) so the things that I mentioned probably are more of a driver problem than a truck problem.

Ive got a 22 with the 7.3. Pushing 30k miles, half from towing. Came from a duramax. I feel about the same as you. It is a great truck. The biggest con for me is towing. It has the power, but being gas wants to get up high in the revs. The downshifting in tow mode is annoying. And if you have cruise set on interstate, mine will down shift 2 gears if it drops 2 mph below set speed. That is very annoying, why not drop one gear to attempt to recover. I typically put in manual and babysit it when towing heavy on interstate. Thanks for the video. Cheers.

I had the same issue (downshifting 2 gears at a time) with my '21 7.3 Godzilla towing a 8400# tt.. Coming back home from a 4k mile trip and going thru a lot of hills & a mtn pass I figured it out. A semi was ahead of me was dropping gears and remembered way back when I spent a small bit of time driving a semi that you need to stay in the torque range, which on a semi is about a 200-400 rpm drop takes you out. I started down shifting a gear at a time with the manual gear selection ( + & - on the stock) while still in Tow/Haul; as my rpm's would drop to stay in the 2500-3200 rpm range on small hills & 3500-3800 on the long steep ones. Works so much better and less issues with the sudden down shift of two gears at a time.

The gas tank was a reason I have stuck with long beds. You get a 48 gallon tank with the long bed.

Yup! Unless you're worried about parallel parking, the long bed is all advantages. Bigger fuel tank, more bed space, longer wheelbase (which means smoother ride and better towing stability). Plus, imho, it looks better.

I agree with each of your points except that I prefer the standard bed look. A friend of my told me ahead of time I was better off getting the long bed and he wasn't wrong. But I love the looks of this truck. The other downside to the long bed is that Shanna would be less likely to drive the truck if it were any bigger. I usually work remotely but when I do have to go to work in the car, she has to use the truck for her daily driving.

Transfer flow now makes a 58 gallon tank for the 7.3 CCSB. It’s not cheap but it’s available.

I have a 2022 F350 4x4 Quad Cab XLT with the 7.3. Long Bed. SRW. I thought about diesel. I could afford the diesel. I bought the 7.3 instead. Why? Low maintenance. Low cost maintenance and none of that acidic DEF crap that causes so many problems. XLT is more than I need. You paid 78,550 so you could have had a diesel daily if you were willing to drop a trim level. I got the F350 and my payload is 4069#. I got the auto fold mirrors. Love them. Love the 8’ bed. Love the 48 gallon tank that comes with 8’ bed. I love the keypad. I think I got the XLT mostly for that damn key pad. I changed out my own headlights to LEDs. I got a sliding rear window and need it for a camper. I got the electric power pedals. Don’t need them. I got the upfitter switches and have a set of BRIGHT backups hooked up on them. Upfitter are cheap. I have the Tow Package and those additional camera angles are great and it will competently back my trailers up by itself but honestly I don’t use that feature all that much. I don’t have a center console and that’s just fine. Adds no value for me. I should’ve done a carpet delete to make cleaning it out easier. Ford trucks are phenomenal for rear seat under storage. I have a TON of shit under there. I put a heavy Ford rubber bed mat in there but I don’t have bed liner. I’m gonna do my own bed liner eventually. Now the 7.3. My GOODNESS what a fabulous engine. Tons of low end torque. I just took a 22k pound dump trailer to the dump the other day. Truck knew it was there but engine and frame didn’t care. Many people ask me why the hell I bought a SuperDuty and not a 150. The answer is the engine! If they put the 7.3 in the F-150 I’d buy it! SuperDuties are fabulous trucks. I just don’t like how tall they are. But o do love my tailgate step. I use it all the time. It is essential for me at 5’ 8” I’m at 66,000 miles. Not a bit of trouble. Love the thing. Best vehicle I ever bought new. I went out the door for $62k back in 2022 COVID days. It’s already paid off and I hope to keep her for a long time. I would buy it again for sure. I might even consider an XL with the STX package cuz that’s all you really need. Oh last point. I just put Michelin MS/2’s on my truck. I now average 15.5mpg around town. Gained nearly a whole mpg. Those tires are amazingly good on this truck if you are like me and you will rarely go bushwhacking.

We talked about the cost of the Lariat trim vs the diesel. But we know ourselves and that we have gotten spoiled. So we wanted the leather seats and some of the extra creature comforts more than the diesel.

I own my own company and have had a very large variety of high end personal trucks and I’ve always gone right back to my gasoline engines as far easier to maintain. The diesel gets 5-7 mpg better than gas but also takes far more expensive maintenance (14 quarts of oil) and with all the needed diesel restrictions and future pricey repairs it’s just not at all needed for what your use of the truck is. In addition, not every gas station has diesel so you did great! 👍🏻 HIGHLY RECOMMEND Amsoil Signature series for ALL your fluid needs as I’ve been running a couple of my personal trucks with extremely high abuse and zero failures all attributed to Amsoil Signature Series. I ruled white out right away. My last few company vehicles were white and I started noticing half the cars on the road were white. Then half the trucks and SUVs were blacked out. I loved the Velocity Blue and was planning on that but then they got rid of it for 2023. So red won out.

For the CarPlay audio all you have to do is press and hold the volume and skip forward buttons at the same time until the screen goes dark. It resets and works again

Hey! You e got great taste as I got the same truck/engine combo as you. Although I did spring for the Tremor package. You noted about fuel tank size…I installed a TransferFlow 58-gal tank. They finally came out with a gas version. About $4k installed. My range is about 750 miles now with that thing. And when it’s full, the ride is so much better from an SD truck.

I've got a 22 lariat with the 7.3. When towing down mountains, i just shift to M and put it in the gear i want to use. Otherwise it will go into 2nd gear and rev the hell out of the engine.

I have the XLT version of your truck. We pull a 35' 5ver at 15K Lbs. 4.10 gears. We get 8.5 MPG pulling the camper all over the southeast and Midwest. I wouldn't trade it for a diesel and it's headaches. Mountains are not an issue. Going down a steep grade takes some practice. The software does need a little tweak for grade shifting but it does a pretty good job. I find the more i drive in the mountains the better it drives because I'm more familiar with what the truck will do especially going down a grade.

Yeah I figure half the problem is just me getting better at knowing the truck and how to use it properly in those few situations. The diesel exhaust brake is just kind of like a cheat code. Makes things way easier. But obviously not easy enough for me to think it's worth the extra money and maintenance costs!

I understand thinking a truck is meant to have an 8 foot bed, but most people refer to it as "standard" because it makes up the majority of the orders. It's rare to even find the long bed on a lot without special ordering. Then with the half tons trucks some of the manufacturers have a 5.5" bed, 6.75" bed, and the 8 ft bed. So just depends on your perspective.

@@JustSimplifying didn't mean to sound critical. Just something that amuses me and most people probably agree with you. I might even agree in a half ton truck. But if that were a dually, where you can only get the 8' bed, you would have to call the 8' standard. I think the 6.5' has become far more popular due to the crew cabs becoming the biggest seller. My crew cab combined with my 8' bed makes for a long long truck. My kids tease me about my 'land yacht", LOL. I love it.

But when we bounce around to various places it would be such a pain getting into town and finding parking spots. If we didn't have dogs I would love a standard cab F450. I have a 22 F250 Lariat Ultimate Tremor. I had the Transfer Flow tank put in and it makes the thing have a 550 to 700 Mike range. The tank replaces the factory tank. Since I don’t use it off road the minimal reduction in center clearance. It is so comfortable we make the 1000 mile drive from Florida to Pa in one day. Put timbrons on as well.

Are you sure you forgot the scales option or was it not available when you placed the order? Same thing happened to me, I thought I merely overlooked the option then later learned it didn’t become available until late in the 2023 order process.

When I did the build it showed it as an option. Then at one point when I was going back and forth on options, I started from scratch with the build. I assumed I missed it then. But maybe they had removed it in that time frame. I know that was one of the items that could add a lot of time to the orders.

Just as a comp... I have a '21 F350, 7.3l gas with 3.73rear & tow a 8400# tt. I leave mine in tow/haul but use the +/- on the shift lever and gear down manually when going up or down hills. Towing thru the hills & mtns of the Pacific NW, I rarely use the brakes going down hills regardless of length or grade. I may have to 'stab' them a few times on rare occasions. Over 12k of towing I have averaged 10.3mpg's. Worst was 7 in a head wind, 13.6 on a very flat road with a speed limit of 50mph.

Yeah next time I tow through mountain areas I’m going to try the manual shifting. Was hoping the computer would do a better job but oh well. And as far as mpg, I’m not the best to compare to. My driving habits are not the most fuel efficient!

Thanks for the video. The 7.3 is a monster. Only thing i recommend is keep the oil fresh. It is unclear if ford has resolved the lifter issues. It is widely believed to be due to extended oil life intervals. Time will tell. Also, you arent missing anything w/ the 8 foot bed. Its more trouble than it's worth. Next time you are cruising through the mountains you should video how the truck handles it!

Ford recommends oil changes at 5K miles for "heavy use" applications but of course that's rather vague. I feel like if you tow heavy say 6 times in 6 months, change the oil after the last heavy tow regardless of how many miles you went. If it's only 3 heavy tows in that time, change at 7,500 (assuming full synthetic). No way would I go to 10K.

I read up on the lifter issues a lot before I bought. It sounded like most of the issues were with Class C campers and box trucks that spent a lot of time idling. But I question the oil change frequency as well. They claim you can use the on board oil life monitor but mine still showed 35% oil life left when I changed it.

Fuel mileage towing is horrible but glad you like it i guess i get 10 miles per gallon with my semi truck thats up to 80,000 pounds and my ram 3500 dually gets around 12 pulling my gooseneck and 20,000 pounds on the trailer

I would disagree on saying it's horrible. Yes, it is definitely not nearly as good as a diesel. But even if the diesel got 15 mpg towing it still would cost me a lot more than this truck. By the time I would spend the extra $10,000 on the engine, have to add DEF costs, have higher maintenance cost, have a higher chance of maintenance due to the emissions crap they put on, and pay more per gallon for the diesel - the diesel would cost way more that what's saved by burning fewer gallons. So to me the only reason to justify the diesel is due to towing heavy like you do. Since we don't plan on towing over 10k pounds, this truck is great for us.

Nice truck. My 23 has about 6k on it so far. I enjoy the truck and haven’t had any issues with jt. Sometimes the screen glitches but like you said all manufacturers do the same. Sometimes my transmission is a little jumpy in 1-2 gear when cold and un loaded. But otherwise smooth. Currently we have a 4k lb travel trailer and I’ve gotten 10.5mpg. On trailer mode it goes to 9.5-10, but on normal it drives fine on the roads we take. The only thing that bothers me is how easy it gets rock chips on the front end. My old ford I drove for 15 years had about 5 chips in the hood. This new truck has 5 already, even the middle of the hood has chips. Seems to chip easy.

I've been lucky enough to not get the hood chipped but have a few on the bumper. I saw on TFL where they asked a GM engineer about the huge flat front ends on all these trucks. He said to get the towing numbers they have to increase cooling so much that the only way to do it is the huge front end. Of course that also means less aerodynamic and more crap hitting it.

I added a ford bug deflector this past week to see if that helps. Not the look I wanted on my truck but if it keeps my hood from being chipped and dented, I’m okay with it. My truck has the chrome package so I don’t have to worry about bumpers. Did that on my old truck and they take a beating. I’m an automotive painter, so I see that everyday. It’s unavoidable

Definitely the smart thing to do. And I know it's protecting my investment but I'm just not a fan of the look. That's the advantage of a blacked out truck. You wouldn't notice it as much.

This is true...mine is the magnetic metallic. But Think it would blend good with your grill...my last truck was a blue color and I Said the same thing about the look, but it sucked when I started getting rock chips in it. So I got the bug deflector for my current truck and surprisingly I really like the look.

What gearing did you get in the axles??? I love the video, but they never say what gears they ordered in the axles. Axle gearing greatly affects fuel mileage and towing.

By the way anyone contemplating an F-350 vs and F-250 - my two cents - get the 350 every day. No brainer. My payload is 4069#. I think the equivalent 250 is like 3400. Payload is important. There ain’t a hill of beans much difference between them except for stiffer / more springs. Yes it rides a little stiffer. But I’ve never been in an F250 that I thought rode “soft” compared to my 350. In my home state of Louisiana they don’t make you register it commercial and I didn’t have to insure it commercial either. So it costs me as much as a 250 to insure and register. I think the upfront cost is maybe $400 more? I honestly forget. I remember researching before purchase and after I found out about registration and insurance I quit looking at the 250’s. Not sure about 250’s but an additional coat for the 350 was a I have a 3” receiver hitch. It is massive rated for towing. Everything that size costs more too so beware. But my boss just saw me about to hook up to his dump trailer and he saw the receiver on my truck and he said “oh that’ll do!”

That is exactly why I went for the 350 over the 250. The cost difference was in that $400-500 range. I'm with you, I don't see the point of the 250 unless a state requires different registration status or something. And if the ride is that big of a deal to someone, they may as well get an F150 and a smaller camper.

My 2023 F250 7.3 gas has been in the shop for 2 weeks now, they can't seem to fix the rear axle noise that developed over only 10,000 miles. Finally diagnosed and said it needed replacement pinion and carrier bearings (which I would have guessed). They replaced those parts and now say it has a new noise and they are tearing it all down again. I bought heavy duty F250 to replace my 1/2 ton Toyota Tundra because I thought it would be safer and more reliable towing my 6500 lb camper. Seems that may have been a mistake. Love the 7.3 engine though....

I have a 2023 F350 7.3 4.3 gears short bed towing 5th wheel that's about 13-14klbs and I got 7.7MPG. Range totally sucks because of the 34gallon tank. I plan on upgrading to the Diesel long bed for more range. Thank goodness for RV life app so I can scout gas stations to see if they have RV pumps. Getting gas in normal pumps is a pain in the ass.

Pilot/Flying J has a pdf you can download that shows which stations have dedicated RV lanes. I created a Guide in my Apple Maps that saves them. I check the satellite image to make sure it's easy to get in and out and if it is I add it to the list. Then when I map my route out I can see where they fall along the route and incorporate those as stop points. Sounds like more work than it really is. But yeah, with the diesel it wouldn't even matter..

I love this truck but regret not getting the long bed diesel for the bigger tank and more mpg/power towing. Like you said about the engine noise, going down hills in Arkansas made it sound like my truck was going to blow up.

⁠the F-350 automatically comes with a 3:73 axle. I think 4:30 is an option. I’m 100% good with the 3:73.

There is a update for your transmission TSB free from the dealership takes about half hour is has to do with the computer update if you didn't know already. Nice truck safe travels 👍

Good to know. I knew there was a recall on it that I've been meaning to get done. That is just for the rear view camera though. I'll definitely be asking about the transmission TSB now!

I don't recommend doing the latest update, I'm a ford tech and we're seeing big problems after the update.

Good looking truck, one thing you said I don’t understand was if my 5th wheel was 10k pds id go to diesal???, they make half tons to pull 10000 pds , why you be scared to pull a 5th wheel over 10k with a f350?

I wouldn’t be scared to pull a 5th wheel over 10k. But a third of the miles we have done have been towing. So if I had even more weight pushing me down hill, the transmission shifting would annoy me too much. So at that point I’d prefer the diesel exhaust brake. Also, if we towed just once in a while I’d be fine towing heavier. But I want this truck to last a long long time. So pushing its limits all the time isn’t the best way to make that happen. Just like your point about half tons towing 10,000 pounds. Yes they are made so they can, doesn’t necessarily mean you should.

Yup. Sold our house last summer. Will be building in Kentucky over the next few years. So I will be pulling some skid steers, mini excavators, and dump trailers with it. But that will just be from rental company to the property.

2022 has a 12 inch screen. Same size as the 2023.

Yes it does! I was looking at trucks six or seven years ago and mapping out how much I needed to save up. Figured at the time I'd get a truck in three years or so. Boy was I wrong.

Hate to tell you but that truck won’t last until you retire. It’s a Ford! I had one and it was in and out of the shop. Each time costing anywhere from one to eight thousand dollars. After 150,000 miles I had enough.

I hope you are wrong. I also hope to retire before this truck has 100,000 miles on it. And it sucks you had so many issues with your truck, but you can find owners of any brand that had similar experiences. It's a crap shoot unfortunately.

Ford has the best exterior design. However, the clown bar graph main gauges are a joke. Ford needs to hire Porsche or Honda instrument designers if they can't figure out how to do functional gauges that's actually useful without looking like they have no clue what they were doing!!!

One of the things I liked on the Ram was that even though they had the huge center screen, the gauges were actually standard needle gauges. Silverado was like that for 2022 as well but the new interiors of theirs went all digital screens too.

@@JustSimplifying There are many advantages to a pure analog gauge over digital or even hybrid gauges as Ford has done with the bar graphs with digital numbers in the middle! • They are far more easier to read than digital gauges as you only hace to get a sense of the relative needle position on the dial face and you'll know approximately the speed of the vehicle or engine speed without actually looking at the exact numbers!!! • They are faster reading under all lighting and environment conditons compared to digital gauges! • They are just better looking and creates a more comfortable environment for the driver without creating distractions and ease driver fatigue on long road trips!!! • Porsche has one of the best instrument designer team on the planet and look at how clean their instruments are on all their cars!!! • Aircraft instrumentation and even military vehicles all have clean analog instruments for ease of communicating the information to the pilots and drivers!!! • What Ford has done with their new instruments is actually takeing 4 steps backwards as it is worse compared to their old analog gauges they use to have in all the SuperDuties!!!!
