The F450 only weighs about 300 pounds more. The Super Duty catalogue says the F350 carries about 1250 pounds more, but not really. The F350 can be optioned with a gasoline engine. The diesel option adds about 700 pounds, the dual batteries adds about 100 pounds, the dual heavy duty alternator (and associated mount) adds about 100 pounds, and the larger fuel tank adds about 50 pounds. Thus, a similarly equipped F350 really only has a payload about 300 pounds greater. The 300 pounds comes from the extra weight on the F450 of the one inch larger diameter brakes, the larger wheels, and the longer front axle.

The Wide Track front end is worth the extra money if buying a F350 vs an F450. The turning radius is fantastic and comes in handy for daily driving. Yes, the ride is a bit harsher. But the larger brakes make up for it. Love my F450 and would buy another.

Excellent video. Really is strange that Ford doesn't explain this to people. Makes you wonder if a lot of dealers out there even realize the differences. If I needed some huge truck like this, the turning radius of the F450 would seal the deal for me. I liked your video showing how much of a difference that the turning radius makes.

bill it as a safer truck to haul the rv for your family, make sure you bring up the kids/grandkids and that you are worried that the rv might be a bit too big for the f250 and you'd feel it would be safer for the kids/grandkids and yourselves to have an f450 because it would be able to handle the trailer better which would make it less likely to cause an accident and hurt someone.

I had a F-350 SRW for my Arctic Fox 990 truck camper and threw a bunch of upgrades into it including 19.5 Rickson Truck wheels and eventually gave up and got a F-450. I got a 2017 F-450 so I didn't have to touch the truck, I roll completely stock with a 5000lb wet Arctic Fox 990 truck camper and it does amazing. Super tight turning radius, no need to upgrade suspension, sway bars are super stout and brakes are amazing, especially empty. I typically roll only about 1/2 of the GCWR of a F450 and it drives like a dream. My wife commented on a F350 SRW hauling a Arctic fox 990 like we have, leaning on turns and rocking with semi's passing on how scary it looked going down the road, I just grinned and said, "that's why I got this, I use to be that guy".

I don't tow or haul anything and I would still love to own one of these. Beautiful truck. The turning radius with that wider track front axle is just crazy. My only complaint would be the 19.5" wheels. With those things, you're stuck with those hard-riding commercial-grade tires. Upgrading to a 20" wheel puts you back in the realm of a bunch of consumer-grade tires that'll ride much nicer and it'll obviously still accommodate the larger brakes, but that's more money you'd have to spend after dropping $100K+ on this truck to begin with.

F-450 also has beefier front end control arms and rods. They terminate with grease lube fittings 7 in total. F-350 has non grease able fittings and control arms and rods are thinner. F-450 has the super 60 front axle , f-350 does not. F-460 had 10 bolt hubs,f-350 has eight bolt hubs. F-450 is more of a trimmed down f-550 than an upgraded f-350. One other thing different between pickup and chassis cab is the frame width. The chassis cab is not as wide as the pickup frame, that goes for both the 350 and 450 models. Another thing to consider when you register the truck in some states, they base the plate on the GVWR of the truck. Here in IL that means both the F350 and the F450 being at 14K would put it into the F plate range since they are over 12K GVWR. IOW it costs $104 a year more for the F350 Dually than a SRW, so might as well get the F450 instead if you live in those states.

I still have a 1999 F-550 flat bed, with the old 7.3 liter Diesel-turbo and a 7-speed standard shift. I have put only one clutch in the truck at about 35-40,000 miles. FORD didn't put a big enough clutch it from the factory. It gets 10-12 mpg whether it's pulling a loaded 4 horse trailer, with large living quarters down the road at 70 miles per hour, or empty. I didn't get it for economy, I got it to do a job which it did for many years. It doesn't get much use now days, but when I need something hauled it does the job. It's a keeper!

I never realized how different the two models were until backing a 30ft trailer with an F450 C&C in a very tight area vs the F350 C&C and Chevy 3500 C&C that i was used to driving/towing with! If you've got the money and constantly haul heavy loads I'd definitely go 450 all day (especially if you do a C&C with some type of flatbed with underbody toolboxs/storage compartments)! For camper only towing doing park and cruise type use I'd stick with the 350 because of the slightly better ride and cheaper tires with more tread options 👍

I did not buy my f450 for a comfort ride or fuel milage, I wanted capability and control of what ever I was towing. You are right I may not have needed so much truck but it looks really good and is capable of doing what I ask of it. After being in an accident with another vehicle and trailer, I want full control. The city slickers may want the Cadillac ride, and milage wide rims that stick out past the fenders, no sidewall tires, front end jacked up while ass is low, and lights under the truck and fender wells... those trucks can only haul groceries, lol. I agree most folks probably only need a dually 350 if hauling. I drive mine everywhere, groceries, rv, hauling gravel go fishing... Thank you for the information.

I remember seeing in the 2017 Super Duty brochure that the 450 pickup only comes one way, 4x4, crew cab, diesel. Maybe it's still like that. That would explain its one way status. Engineering background here I must say that the turning radius on the F450 is AMAZING. I have not tried the F550 yet but I want to ask what is the real FUEL MPG City/HIGHWAY when you are NOT TOWING? For all of the negative talks about Ford, they still make the best trucks, hands down. I heard people who bought the F350 have some buyer's remorse because the turning apparatus is not as good. Even if you are not towing, I would still recommend the F450 because it is a more nice truck, and fun to drive. i also want to get an extended bed. Question it's the same Dana 41 vs 37 split. What are the advantages of the 41 vs the 37 split can you town more? Now if you don't need to tow that much then I recommend the F250 Super Duty and you can still tow quite a bit. You get a combined 15 MPG when you are not towing.

Thanks for your video. For the last 20 years I've worked at an ambulance manufacturing facility, and we build a lot of units on the F450 and F550 chassis before moving up to the medium duty chassis. Over the years I've been amazed how few people actually know the differences between the chassis. I'm glad you've done this video to help folks learn about it!

No truck has the turning feature like. F450 ! it feels like you can turn it for ever, very handy especially when towing an RV which requires one move U turn instead of going back and forth. I am glad I bought the F450

I have a 21k pound toy hauler that I tow with an f450. I had a hot shot driver, who had an f350, tell me "be glad you bought the f450" Enough said. I understand everything this guy said, especially about payload. Turning radius on my f450 is better than the short bed extended cab chevy I had...

I find it funny when he says at the end 'That's about all you get with the F450 over the F350 folks'....when those are significant differences to many. The turning radius itself by him, was not highlighted as significantly as he should have, as it's HUGE when it comes to making a sharp turn! Personally, if I would end up going back to having the need of a large truck as I once had an F450, I'd most certainly do it again, and on a long trip, the ride is fabulously comfortable!

Great video, good info. I’ll be that guy though and point out a few things you kinda “missed.”Mainly that these differences depend on the year, which certainly adds more potentially confusing info, but I believe it is worth noting in case someone were to by an older year model truck. 08-10: 450 is as you described but had the same square tube rear axle as the c&c truck. Additionally they offered the “tow boss” which was(the perfect truck) a 350 with the 450 axle and 350 wheels brakes and rear axle. 11-14: 450 had the 350 rear axle, wheels and brakes 15-16: 450 had the same features as the 08-10 and the tow boss 350 returned 17+ is exactly as you described. The difference in payload between the 350, 350 tow boss and 450 had varied quite a bit since 08(I haven’t been interested enough to remember those particular details)

Very close brother. Ford opted to upgrade the 2015/2016 F450 to the Dana S130 axle vs the Dana S110 use on the 08-10. Both shared a very similar design with the use of the square axle tubes. The S130 has a higher axle rating though.

The turning radius was big for us. We didn’t loose 1000lbs capacity but did loose about 600lbs. We don’t need it so it wasn’t a big deal for us. We tow a 44ft 5th wheel and can do u-turns if needed. But not everyone will want or need the turning radius of the f450.

4 years ago when I was looking to retire my "tetanus" truck ( I hate Ohio road salt) I was looking at F450's just because of the 19.5 tires. I move my 13000# excavator and other equipment with the pick up sometimes and the stiffer tires are nice and they last a lot longer when loaded. I ended up finding a quite nice '04 f350 king ranch crew cab dually with 19.5 aluminum wheels on it and a cummins under the hood. It does a fine job towing and better than 20mpg empty but I need the proverbial "40 acres to turn the thing around". Wish I had the wide track front end of the f450.

The rear leaf spring contains one extra "leaf" and is awesomely more stout. That's the difference. Only in dualies the F450 is made explicitly for towing and cargo capacity...not for snow plowing, not for daily driver use...and it has a vast interior space unto itself so "fun for the whole Family" would be an understatement. Not a field truck though absolutely and actually does not handle well unladen. Given how amazing the Ford F150 hybrid is I'm hard pressed to be interested in any Super Duty truck at the moment ... especially as the Ford Maverick looks set to be even more amazing and the new Ford Ranger for next year imminent. But the best thing about the Ford F450 is best in class chassis that has remained basically unchanged for well over a decade. That makes making changes far far far more easy along the assembly than would be true of any other super heavy duty truck on the market at the moment. The only material step up would be to the Ford F750 which comes equiped with air brakes. To me that should be standard on any full size US made truck period currently and why I'm only interested in the Ford Maverick and upcoming Ford Ranger for next Year 2022. With all electric pickup truck Wars starting next Year that makes me hold off on even being interested in any product until all that rubber hits the road as well. Simply put the USA has a *MASSIVE* glut of vehicle at the moment and prices look set to plunge.

Hmmm...very interesting. My current truck is a 20-year-old F150 that is still seving me well. Granted, I've had about $4K worth of repairs done over the last 4 years or so, but all in all, that was far cheaper than a new truck! We got this truck from an insurance settlement because some $%(*%* t-boned by previous F150 that I really liked. It had a full 8' bed and a high-rise camper shell, making it ideal for our craft shows. However, in seeking a replacement, we searched and searched all over the SF Bay Area and environs, and NO 8' bed trucks were to be found on the used market! The insurance $$ wasn't enough to get a new truck, and at that, the dealers didn't have 8' beds, either: it would have had to be special-ordered. What a bummer! If I ever decide to go for getting a 5th wheel and taking off to tour the country, I'll definitely be looking for the F350 dually. FORD! First On Race Day! ;-)

The highest towing version is the single cab 4x2. 4x4 lowers towing. Most of all the additions lower towing capacity as well becuase it makes it heavier or something else not made for towing. ALL of them can tow what any of you are pulling because their actual towing capacity is higher than your license will allow. Actually higher than can legally be pulled on the road. If you have the money, its mostly luxury or more accommodation that comes with the upgrades. Most all of the options can be gotten on a 350 for an upcharge. Like the rear gears or some reinforcement, whatever. You can put a truck bed on most of the commercial versions but yes, they are built for different reasons and are outfitted differently so you might have to change something to fit right.

I like how you make the video seem like you rehearsed what your trying to say. all the information is there and I'm not really bored. the pictures help a lot as well. its also kinda cool you just stuck dash cam footage of driving around Corpus Cristi up as the video and still for some reason it wasn't boring. I tried to make a video on the differences between a ram 3500 and 4500 cab and chassis truck but it was extremely painful to watch even for me. I was out with a camera and a pair of calipers measuring the frame and counting springs and all sorts of stuff saying "uh" and like almost every other word. no script at all. your video came out way better had more information and somehow was Alot shorter than mine. I was so embarrassed by mine I still didn't even post it yet and its been almost a year since I filmed it. I was kinda hoping I would get better at the youtube and refilm it one day.

F350 to haul F450 to tow I beefed up the rear end on my F-450 with Carli long travel airbags and 3800 pound supplemental springs so it does not look like it is overloaded. If it does not look overloaded I will be left alone. I did that for a large and heavy slide-in truck camper. I need to be able to tow the boat and have the camper.

I have 2019 F350 Dually lariat. I pull my big tex tandem dual gooseneck. I was going to buy a f450 but that 4.30 ratio was a turn off. I ordered a f350 with 3.55’s . Dealer thought i was crazy but i said truck plenty of torque and hp. Doesn’t need 4.10’s. I haul skid steer and mini excavators with it. They are usually around 12k pounds. And sometimes i haul a Cat D5 dozer that is 20k pounds . Truck does it very well. Actually scary how well it does. As for wide track front axle. Not necessary. I have Peterbilt that is almost 80’ long with lowboy.. the pickup is like a toy to me.

I guess I must be the only guy that drives his truck on the beach. That's why I got the 350. There's no way in hell you're airing down the tires on a 450 to drive on the sand. That's a highway only vehicle with commercial tires. I also plan to get a slide-on truck camper so the extra 1k lbs. of payload is a big deal for me. Love your channel, but would LOVE someday to see a truck camper review, or two, or three!!

The 450 will safely carry more in the bed than 350, but it's de-rated (on paper) so it can be classified as a Class 3. If you're not hauling commercially, won't matter.

You get a slightly upgraded drive train on the F450 compared to the F350. So to summarize; having equal engine specs and rear suspension, towing capacity doesnt change but reliability enhances, hence bigger brakes and extra 2 lugs.

I think it can actually carry and move more, but it would exceed the factory weight ratings. However, those ratings are artificially low so it stays in the 14,000 lb class. Ford might have to market it as a medium duty pickup if they put it's true capacities on the GVWR label. That's what I'm getting. Nobody can actually say it, but the truck can do it. Sort of like the way muscle car engines were underrated for insurance purposes.🤫

The biggest problem is tires/wheels. With an F450, you get commercial hauler tires and wheel sizes, designed for long distance longevity and capacity on Interstates and why they're 19.5 (notice the .5? That means they're designed for hauling on roadways). The F350 comes with 17.0 or 18.0 (or 20.0) rims. Notice the size ends in .0? That means "passenger light-duty", which means you can easily find off-road tires to retrofit onto your 17, 18, or 20 inch rims. There's precious few options for "off road rated" tires for a commercial hauler, which means if you have an F450, you need to change your rims also, at about $1200 per rim, in order to get decent offroad capability.

There are some conversion companies out there that will fit a truck bed on a cab and chassis truck. But buyer beware you will pay top dollar for this . You will also want to have them install any hitch you could need such as gooseneck or fifth wheel . Trust me the rear of the frame is narrower and the bed will have to be removed for any future installation. I had a 2016 ram 5500 set up this way.
